Location: Reno, NV | How do you determine which "F" someone intended you to use, when they write chords, like you would see on the Tab sites. I prefer X03211 to 133211 for obvious reasons. Is there any rule as to when one just works better? 133211 is fuller, but similar, can you just substitue one for the other at any time? |

Location: PDX | Depends on the structure of the song: where the melody notes are and what the bass line is doing.
However, if your just strumming chords and using the guitar to accompany your voice, it's probably not going to matter which one your using.
As in most things: decide for yourself what works for you and what doesn't.

Use the first finger to mute the high e string.
Use your thumb to muter the low e and a strings.
I don't know what you call it, but I use it for an f major chord when playing a bo diddley, reggae or punk rhthym. Lot's easier for a simp like me. |

Location: Omaha, NE | Back to the original question...in my mind it comes down to what you are reading. If the author/composer really thinks it is important to play a particular chord in a particular way, he should spell that out with a diagram. Standard chord notation is completely ambiguous. I've never sat down and tried to figure out how many ways there are to play an F chord, but there's a bunch.
So, unless the music tells you something different, play it however you want. Just listen to it and make sure it sounds good.
But you should also be fluent in the major barre chord shapes: E, A and C. The F chord is just the E shape with a barre behind it. The F chord posted above by cwk2 can be thought of as a C chord shape played with a barre at the fifth fret.
There's lots of ways to do it. Try them all! |

'cept I don't mute nuthin, I just don't hit the E & A, but I do hit the little e. I adds a nice little ping. Works well on some CSN&Y stuff.

Location: Taiwan | On some pieces it seems you need to go with the full bar because hitting the (low F) baseline note and then getting to a lazy F is even harder.
I'm new and it's all hard for me, so I decided to just learn the hard one and get it over with.
It's like learning to drive on a stick (not automatic) or fly in a taildragger (not a nosewheel.) Better in the long run.

Is a power chord, ala the metal and or punk world. I use a bar on the first fret that mutes the three high strings, and then the middle finger to bar the low e and a.
These little tricks let me do things I normally shouldn't be able to do. Musically speaking. |
