i was working for my mother in laws company, cleaning all the junk out of a foreclosed home, and came across an ovation guitar. sweet find. i took it to the local sam ash luthier and he restrung it and replaces a fret wire, but he couldnt tell me anything about it. the model no is 1612-1 and i dont know where the serial no is. can you guys help me identify this guitar?

*ps i did a forum search and looked at the ovation code cracker and found out it was a acoustic electric roundbacks, standard bowl, 5 13/16" deep, deluxe baladeer, but i want to know the year and what it might be worth. you guys know how i can find that out?

Serial number is usually on the back of the headstock or on the label inside the soundhole. We need a serial number to figure out the date.

found it. it is a little white label about an inch and a half above the big metallic label that says "OVATION" and underneath the serial no reads 085708. what now?

For an estimate of going Ebay prices I would do an advanced search of the Completed listings like this one!

You will find they go from $150-$250. It's rather disappointing. Enjoy what you have and it's value is much higher!

Nope. 1612 is A/E Deluxe Balladeer or Custom Balladeer. Artist balladeer is 1121/1621. Dave

whoa, this has gotta be wrong. this guitar is all original, keys and electronics in good condition, and its 30 years old. why is it so cheap? 150-250 bucks? that looks like a rip off considering it was double that in 76 when it was new. dont guitars go up in value the older they are?

This is a big generalization, but I would say Ovations appreciate at about the same rate as inflation. So, an Ovation that maybe sold for $400. new in 1975 can probably be had today for about the same $400. (in todays dollars) or maybe less.

Other brands with famous names on them might apprciate 2-5 times the rate of inflation.

The Balladeers were workhorses! They live long and there were a lot of them made. They have their own unique voice and are excellent quality.

I have a Custom Balladeer 1112-1 and if I got $250 for I'd be on the high end. So it stays here.

my thoughts are...if its not taking up space put it in a safe place and hold on to it...you never know.

But if it holds no vlaue to you...Im quite sure you will have no problem selling it.
