Location: Campbell River, British Columbia | How's this for a topic? We're all over the world, literally and figuratively here. We're exposed to many different kinds of music that may be familiar to us but foreign to others on the board.
Here's my first recomendation:
Luther Wright and the Wrongs - Rebuild The Wall
This album was out of print for a while, but I just noticed it's available again.
This is a re-imagining of Pink Floyds "The Wall" as a country/bluegrass album. It's funny, serious, and a fine work of art all at the same time.
The piece is done seriously, all humour comes only from the smack-in-the-side-of-the-head of hearing something done completely different. (Like Dwight Yoakum covering The Clashes 'Train In Vain.') Some songs, noticeably Mother, actually work better as country songs.
It doesn't have toooo much banjo, IMO. Just enough to please Tim without making everyone else barf.
John Petersen - Rest is also something that gets regular/occasional plays around our house when we want calm while reading... |

| Been to the Future by Joey Eppard. Ever since I first heard of him and his band 3, I can't stop listening. So much talent in that band, and you can really hear his crazy guitar skills on his solo album. You can probably only buy it online, since it was published on a minor little new york label.
You can check out some samples one www.purevolume.com/joeyeppard or www.myspace.com/joeyeppard.
Note that the songs "I can't", "Shadowplay", and "Word to the Wise" are not on this CD but one of three other albums he has recorded and not yet released, and "Bramfatura" is a souped up version of a song from Been to the Future called "Vinegar Hill." Check out the crazy speed in Word to the Wise. |

I seem to keep drifting back to Bruce Cockburn's "Speechless". Great acoustic inspiration. |

Oh; and Phil lent me a copy of that Luther W and the Wrongs; yep pretty good. I burned a copy and it actually finds a spin in the rotation every now and then. Which is actually saying a lot because jazz (and whatever in the heck my wife plays) and an occasional classical disc is about all the CD player gets fed in my house.

One CD that I stumbled upon by sheer luck - The Long Black Veil, by the Chieftains. I was working out of our Ottawa office about 6 years ago sitting at this guys desk - John F. Kennedy (I'm not kidding) - and he had this CD sitting there. I ripped it onto my laptop (don't wanna let Greg go down alone!) and it is still one of my favorites. It actually developed into a longing to visit Ireland, which we did. |

Have y'ever heard the Chieftains' "Reel Music"??
It's all stuff that they did for movie & TV soundtracks . . .
Also Good. |

But if the free release of their first effort Bomb is any indication you aren't any more likely to hear them then you were when they were "the next big thing" in the 80's.
Songs like
Eyes of a Stranger
China Boys
I Will
among others stand up well, if you can find them. |

Surely there's something that the locals guard jealously from the haolie tourists?
Speaking of The Haolies , their first album was way cool...especially their version of Sleepwalk, with their own lyrics! But I think they're originally from NY/Brooklynn. |

They also said that for the first YEAR of it's release, it will ONLY be available at WalMarts.
Judging by WalMart's past business practices, I'm sure it was stipulated that they would only sell it if they had "exclusivity".
If this is true, I think it's really sad how a once-great rock&roll band has TOTALLY "SoldOut" . . .
Way t'GO, Henley!!!

CRUSTER! Thanks for recommending The Black Keys. I checked them out and I'll definitely be buying some of that. Glad you enjoyed them. I can't remember how I first heard of them, but I wound up with two of their albums. Shortly after that a friend and I made the trek to Clebeland (yeah, I know, it's a 'v' not a 'b') to see them at the Agora. The show was very good and now I have everything they've put out. IIRC, one of the living blues legends made the comment that TBK were playing the 'real blues.' Something along those lines, anyway. It's not everyone's cup of tea, and it can get repetitive (four albums later), but I like it.
Something else to check out is:
Patrick Sweany Band
They were one of the openers at the Agora and absolutely rocked the blues. Very hard driving music played exceptionally well. I picked up (all) three of their CDs there, and listened to them on the way back...mostly acoustic folk and blues music, which was nothing like their live show. But, it is still good; IIRC, Patrick Sweany won some folk music award a while back. Their album "Henry Ford Bedroom" was more electric, maybe, now that I'm thinking about it. |

If I take time for just music, I'd rather play than listen.
But in the spirit of the thread I'll put in my 2 cents.
The Presidents of the United States album. It is much deeper than just the hit, "Peaches". |

My new favourite foriegn band is Mana .... then I goto wikipedia and find they've won Grammys that I've never heard of. (must have been at the pre-show dinner where they give out the obscure ones...) Bought the album 'Sueños Líquidos' (1997) for the cover and found the music moved me too. |
