String the low 4 with octaves, keep e&b with regular gauge. tune to standard.

Nashville tuning
This is achieved on a high-strung guitar - a guitar strung with only the high strings of a 12-string guitar set. This is known as "Nashville tuning" when the strings are in standard tuning.

I used to keep one of my Artist bowel...uh, I mean Artist bowl Ovations strung up that way when I lived and worked in Nashville. But, truth be known, there was hardly a call for this sound after about 1980. It was almost always used in conjunction with a regularly tuned cue-stick panned left and right in the mix. Stereo 12-string!!! I still like this tuning sometimes.

I noticed that D'Addario still makes a set for this tuning when I was ordering from juststrings.com last night. But, beware of any gauge over an .009 for your high G (third) string. Those suckers will pop a lot!!

High-string guitar is really a recording technique rather than something you'd actually play for recreation or as a main guitar part. It sounds good mixed way back dead centre between double-tracked regular guitar. Or you can double-track the high-string hard left and right way back in the mix with a regular guitar panned centre. It's also nice for doubling a rhythm part live, but you and whoever is playing the regular guitar need to keep it tight or it can sound real messy.

I've seen high strung guitars played finger style and they sounded damned good. Also, if you're playing in a group, it's fun to have a different sound. I used to have an old Legend strung that way. It was the only way that guitar sounded good..

I wonder how a 97 Collectors would sound strung that way?

I play 2nd guitar for the weekend gatherings at our church. I'm always trying to do something to compliment what's being played.
When they email me the song list I try to hear in my head what will fit where. 99% of the time it's the 1115. Every now and then something very delicate will really enhance the feel. That's when I put the high strings on the '97 Collectors'. Man...does that little guitar sound sweet strung like that!
It may be only one song. Maybe only the intro and outro on one song. That's enough.

Well I changed the strings on my Balladeer last week to this stringing and I really like it!

I won't be going back to "regular" stringing for a while!

It adds that 12-string droneish, almost an alternative tuning sound ... very sweet and lush...especially on the minor chords.
