Reminicing about that first Boston album, got me thinking about artists/albums that I have bought and enjoyed in 4 different formats: 8-track & LP & cassette & CD. Eagles Best of '71-74 was another. Anyone else been around long enough to have done this with a favorite that stood the test of time? |

| I had the GCampbell "Live in New Jersey" concert on reel-to-reel, 8-track, and later it came out on Cassette, though hard to find. Great Concert. They should ask Mr.Campbell to re-release it on CD...I wonder who has the 'rights' to that concert now? |

Brad Delp wakes up in a room all in white, full of top-of-the-line musical instruments. Billy Preston walks into the room and sits at the keyboards, George Harrison walks in and picks up a Sitar, Jaco Pastorius picks up the bass... and musicians continue to file in and pick up instruments.
Amazed, Brad mutters; "Wow! There is a Rock 'n' Roll Heaven!"
"Heaven?" Says Billy Preston.
Just then Karen Carpenter walks in, sits at the drums and speaks. "Okay everyone. Once more from the top. Close To You. One - Two - Three - four....." |

I have to find them. I got a fostex from a customer and my plan is to play them and record them digitally. |

Do you know if you might happen t'have Renaissance live at the Capitol Theatre in Passaic?? WNEW-FM up here broadcast it live, but I would imagine they had a sister staion down there outta Philly that might've carried it as well.
It was the last night of their tour before going back to England the next day, and was a GREAT show!! I was AT the show, and a friend of mine taped it (on cassette) off the radio for me, but the tape is long gone . . .
I'd LOVE t'be able to get another copy of that show. |

I've sold my reel to reel and my tapes.
I just have cd's, and in light of the ipod onslaught, the cd looks like it'll be extinct. |

It's written on the cover: 3-3/4 I.P.S four track stereo tape record.
Do you know what kind of player is needed???

Location: Phoenix AZ | It's a standard reel to reel 3-3/4 speed. 4 track stereo means that there is 4 magnetic tracks on the tape. Two of them make up side 1 (stereo), then you flip it over and the other two tracks are the stereo of side 2. Dave |

I also have an 8-track quadaphonic system with about a half dozen tapes that played only one way, thereby providing 4 individual stereo tracks. The effect was exceptional, but the idea never took hold. It was 25 years ahead of its time and eventually reappeared in the form of digital surround sound. |

Location: Colorado Rocky Mountains | Cliff, two weeks for the quad broadcast was only a few months shorter than the lifespan for the quad tape machines. I was one of the first in my high school to install an 8-track in my car. The year was 1967. My friends chose the 4-track. I think it was produced by Muntz or something like that. Within a year or two, everybody had switched over to 8-tracks. The cassette decks were still a few years out. |

Location: Boise, Idaho | I was one of the first to put a cassette deck in my car that had an autoreverse. A Bell and Howell. Cut a hole in the center panel in the dash of the Javelin. It was cool until I hit a bump and it would reverse by itself.
I remember seeing 8 track tape laying all over the highways.
Still have my first Sony reel to reel and a bunch of tapes. |

Location: Tennessee | I had a Panasonic quad rig with turntable that I bought in the mid 70's. It is long gone, but I still have a number of quad albums, including "Buddha and the Chocolate Box" by Cat Stevens.
Another one was "The Best of the Guess Who", which put me in the club of having the album on 8-track, cassette, vinyl, and CD.
BTW, the drum riff in "Hand Me Down World" was really cool in quad ... started out back left and circled clockwise to back right.
I actually had an 8-track recording machine and was able to record albums onto 8 track so I could listen to them in the car. I think I may still have some 8-tracks in a box somewhere. |

Location: Colorado Rocky Mountains | When 8 tracks first came out, the concept of piracy protection was unknown, largely ignored, or poorly policed. I can remember walking into independent record shops and handing the proprietor a list of songs I wanted on a single 8-track tape. By the next day, he'd hand me the finished tape for half the cost of a new one. And, by and large, the recording quality was very acceptable. I was completely amazed at how he did this and ordered dozens of custom 8-tracks in this manner. This, too, served as a precursor to the custom CD generation. |

Pioneer made some great decks. |

Location: big island | i also had "buddha and the chocolate box" in quad as well as the who's "quadrophenia". played 'em on a compact panasonic quad system done in gloss white with black face. i was in the hospital having surgery a few days before my high school graduation. i brought this system in to my hospital room and set up the four speakers around the head of the bed. i recall many doctors and nurses/nurses aides crowding in over the top of me to hear the quad sound. |

The 8-track hasn't been used in years, but I have a CD player patched into the aux and the amp and tuner still work just great. It will likely outlast the better gear in the other rooms. |
