(sorry... inside joke for GWB)
.
Ask the bands that play Detroit.
Our past has a reputation of hard working blue collars who like to let loose. Our future?? Who knows.
City #2.... Cleveland? |

I think the message is that good stuff comes up everywhere. These days, all the cities look the same anyway. |

Not many cities have the amount of venues for playing live music as Austin Tx. They also host the SXSW gathering each year. Austin gets my vote. |

Location: Cherry Hill, NJ | Dubai? Oil, not rock & roll. I think I could be objective on this, as Austin actually has more live music venues than cities 3 times its size. Los Angeles is a big recording center, and competes. San Francisco? I think we're talking about the present tense here. |

Perhaps you're thinking of New York as the birthplace of punk? New York Dolls, Blondie, Sex Pistols? |

Breaking news.
Bob Seger has booked two nights at Cobo Hall in Detroit. That is where "Live Bullet" was recorded many years ago.
Well... it seems a though Seger is going to re-create that concert and record the shows for a possible release.
"Detroit...the home of Rock & Roll!! yeah"
Like em or not... Kiss recorded their live album at Cobo.
As well as J. Geils.
It was because of that Detroit crowd. |

It was because of that Detroit crowd. Rumour has it that both the guitar work and the crowd noise was overdubbed to make it more listenable. ;) |

My point was, if you want to call Detroit the home of RnR, fine. If you want to include all forms of music, then I would question that choice. NY Philharmonic, Julliard School, Carneige Hall, The Blue Note, The Bottom Line, MSG, The Met, Broadway ... I have the upmost respect for Kiss, Motown music and Cobo Hall.

I truly, truly hope not. Live Bullet can not be re-created. The only Bullet from that time that is still with it is Alto Reed. It would be like Paul and Ringo getting together to remake Sgt. Pepper's.
I saw Seger and "the Silver Bullet Band" a couple of weeks back as a favor to lady stonebobbo. Decent show, but steeped in all the old stuff. Not my bag. Just an arena full of old, fat people wanting to hear "Old Time Rock and Roll", a song whose message I never connected with. When he launched into it, the place went nuts and everyone stood up dancing (in the way only old, fat white people can). I about threw up.
The week before that, lady stonebobbo humored me and joined me for a Smithereens show in SF. 500 people smashed into a small club. Everybody sweating and gyrating mere inches apart. No light shows, no stage decorations ... just two electric guitars, a bass and drums kicking it for close to three hours. That's what rock and roll is all about.
I've always been partial to the bands that come out of Jersey and Boston. They seem to relate to the people the best. |

Just not my flavor of ice cream, I guess.

I've done the arena rock shows (Tull, Floyd, Clapton, etc.) and the outdoor potfests (Grateful Dead, Weir/Wasserman, Buffet, etc.). The shows were enjoyable (for certain values thereof), but I wouldn't call them 'moving.' Virtually unknown bands in small, smokey dives with crappy acoustics (the venue, not the instruments) but lots of energy (from the crowd as well as the band)...now that is entertainment. And the chix are usually a lot more, uh, friendly. :p
JMO. YMMV. HAND. |

Detroit was at one time a great R&R city. Then came SF, NY, Boston, Seattle...
Don't forget Austin, Memphis, Macon, Muscle Shoals... |
