My new project needs to decide on a name! I need your help!

We started out as "Red Eye Black Finger", but that was just a fun name during our warehouse period.

Then we went to "Full Reverse". We've played one warm-up gig under that name.

Then we started thinking about a second name that we could use in dive bars so we don't soil our reputation in the nicer places. We considered "Frankie Filet and the Catch of the Day", but then came to "Big Luscious and the Downward Spiral".

So, now I'm thinking that I like "Big Luscious and the Downward Spiral" as our primary name. Its kindof funny and catchy. "Full Reverse" sounds like just another bar band.

Anyway, we play classic rock and blues.

What's your pick?

"Big Luscious Black Eye"

"Red Luscious Spiral Finger"

"Reverse Red Eye"...no, that will only work in gay bars.

Is there a "Free Beer" franchise band in your neighbourhood? That one always seems to pack 'em in. Popular with bar owners.

"But it's the bands name, really!"

Or, for a slight touch of originality

Well, honestly "Big Luscious and the Downward Spiral" kinda creeps me out. But I like it better than "Full Reverse which sounds like some lame 90's band... no offense. I always liked "Judge Fudge and the Chocolate Men" myself.

There used to be a band in Sydney called "Free Beer Band"
Of course when the banner was hung at the venue people thought it said

FREE BEER - BAND

I always wanted a band called "Fast Track to Porn".

It was just a random quote one of my friends said once about trying to break into the film business, and everyone went 'Woah - great name for a band'.

How about "Explosive Diarrhea".

Here's a Dave Barry list of good rock band names .

It probably won't help, but it's interesting reading.

I never did like long names. When I played in an instrumental surf band in the 60's, we called ourselves the Aces. Personally, I would shorten your suggestion to just "Luscious Spiral" or "Downward Spiral."

The shorter the name the better.
Since you want to have a nom de plume for playing dive bars, and thus not soil your reputation when you play other places, how about, using your own words:

Soiled Places

Yeah. Unfortunately, this is the kind of stuff it's best at remembering.
Birthdays and anniversarys are a struggle.
Disgusting bodily functions as band names? No problem.

Wasn't Free Beer a band that did shows with Barenaked Ladies? That way the sign said "Free Beer and Barenaked Ladies". I'm sure it packed 'em in.

Always turns into a sex thing, doesn't it?

How about "Big Pussy and the Love Torpedos"?

Reminds me of the bit from Spinal Tap:

Bobbi Flekman: You put a greased naked woman on all fours with a dog collar around her neck, and a leash, and a man's arm extended out up to here, holding onto the leash, and pushing a black glove in her face to sniff it. You don't find that offensive? You don't find that sexist?

Ian Faith: This is 1982, Bobbi, c'mon!

Bobbi Flekman: That's right, it's 1982! Get out of the '60s. We don't have this mentality anymore.

Ian Faith: Well, you should have seen the cover they wanted to do! It wasn't a glove, believe me.

Now, if we're at all serious here....... .... the naming of a band is the same as any type of business or product branding. Therefore, the name should reflect, in some way, what the audience is likely to hear in order that they may decide for themselves if this service is of use/interest.

Therefore; number, names, and ages of band members
:Types of music played
:venues targetted
are all important. EG: If you plan to do weddings, Dirty Dick & the Master Beaters is probably not a good choice.

As mentioned before, if it's going to be a bar band, names that cause people to come and drink make that band very popular with bar owners.

SHorter names are easier to read on the billboard as people drive by...and the bar is likely to have enough letters to spell it.
"Scoobie Doobie Bros."
might come up as
"Scoobie Dubie Brs"
When the guy putting up the name runs out of 'O's.
;)

Joke names can get as tired as telling the same joke over and over again, but a decent pun sometimes has legs.
The Fungis - worked well for a disband around here.
Likewise
Elmer Thudd - for a country rock band.
Stoop Solo - Though the band was good. The name not only ran out of Os the self deprication served them poorly.

FWIW

Keep in mind, except for the band....it's not all about sex. It's all about selling beer. A band is a method of selling beer that works in countries where you're allowed to drink and dance.
Pack the dancefloor, sell more beer, make more money.

Heard the term "Zero Tolerance" today and thought of this thread for some reason. :)

If it's already here, just ignore this. No time to read back thru 4 pages.

my last name is dellinger, during my formative years, "dingleberry" was a nickname i often got tagged with by my school friends.

some of you will recall david dellinger of the chicago seven war protest trial (abbie hoffman, etc.). david is my cousin. he passed away in 2004.
