Last fall I sauntered in to my local guitar store and was looking to buy a twelve sting. I certainly wasn't looking for an Ovation as I had been conditioned by one of my guitar playing friends to believe that Ovations are "toy guitars " that sound like they are made out of plastic. I'm over 50 so this opinion was given to me back in the original Glenn Campell Show days.

So I had never even bother playing an Ovation until now because I had convinced myself, based on bad advice, that Ovations were no good.

I see this Ovation Hanging high on the wall and it really looked great so just as a joke I decided to give it a try. So I tune it up and away I go, just playing it acoustically;unbelieveably it actually sounds good, I mean really good. So I call the shop owner and one of the sales people over and say something like:"listen to this 12 string and tell me if I'm loosing my mind because it sounds great to me and I know that Ovations don't sound good". They said that not only do they sound great but try plugging it in. So I did and I couldn't really make it sound bad; it sounded full bodied and jangly and everything I wanted in a 12 string. So I buy it for about $900 new. I look inside the guitar at it's label and it says that it's an 1858LX Elite. So I think that's pretty cool and I go home and start playing and really enjoying the guitar . This was last September or October(2006).

So I am really proud of myself for discovering how good Ovations sound and actually buying one. I decide to go online and learn more. I find info about Ovations and their new LX guitars with the dual truss rod system, new composite material and Op-Pro preamp. So I go back to my guitar and see that it has no truss rod cover (let alone an LX one)and an OP-40 preamp .

So I'm confused so I send Ovation an email and ask about this guiatar and give them the serial number. They assure me that it left the Factory with an OP-Pro pre-amp and that the store must have switched it out. So later that week I take it back to the store and complain and they tell me to leave it and they'll have their Kaman Sales rep take a look at it. He looks at it and sends it back to Ovation. As it turns out, the guitar I got was an 1858 ,but not an 1858LX. It had somehow been mis-labeled at the factory. It is now past Xmas and the salesman asks me what I want to do. I said I paid for an 1858LX , so that's what I wanted. He gives this instruction to the factory and they say they weren't making any at the time but would put a rush on mine. I just picked it up about a week or two ago.

Fortunateley I have lots of guitars and this whole ordeal was carried out on very friendly terms. But now I have my 1858LX now and I'm loving even more now that I lowered the action. It took me a while but now I'm an Ovation owner.

Regards,

Tom

Welcome Tom. And congrats to your new guitar.

BUT: There is still a lot to discover. Looks like you haven't played a Deep Bowl Ovation. Or a Deep Bowl textured Top Adamas. Try one of these acoustically - maybe you wish to get rid of some of your old acoustics.

For example, I had an old Takamine 341 "Springsteen" model, sounding good, looking beautiful, that I have sold to a friend, because it just could not get in touch with one of my deep bowls.

It's always fun to watch someone take their first step... not knowing it's of the deep end.

the 12 string LX's are very sweet sounding guitars. There are a couple of them floating about round here...

and as Kurt sez... Oh, there's more tasty flavors for you to try...

Welcome Tom!

I'm down here just a little south of Jamestown. Really exciting story you have. Let me invite you to bring your new LX to the Factory tour in May. We'd love to check it out in person (and meet you of course). It's such a blast...hope you'll consider it.

Doc, welcome to the club. You're definitely going to need to come to the OFC gathering in May at the factory in CT. But be prepared because Ovations can be very very addicting. I predict a bad case of Ovation G.A.S in your future.....

Just curious, Tom. Do you think the LX version sounds better acoustically than your original 1858?

Welcome to the OFC.....GOOD GRIEF, I just noticed your menagerie of guitars and amps. Wait here while I go get my wife to see this, so she can see how lucky she is..... :D

Whoa, just got back from the Philharmonic. Outstanding performance of a Mozart violin Concerto and Mahler's 5th Symphony brought down the house !

Thank you all for the welcomes and the warnings about Ovation GAS. I have lots of guitars so i'm not cured of GAS(as there is no cure)but the need to acquire becomes less frequent when I discover one of my guitars that I haven't played in a while !

Roger,

I never really had them at the same time to A/B compare. I know that the original 1858 sounded great acoustically .

Tom, welcome. So, do you live in a warehouse? You probably pay more for strings than I pay income tax.

Oz. DON'T go down the slide guitar/alternative tuning road.

It'll drive you nuts with only 2 guitars. Trust me, I know. (My missus thinks ONE expensive guitar is too many)

I'm right with ya Muzza. Mine thinks new carpet is more important than a new instrument.

That slideguitar/alternative tuning road is very tempting though.

ozwatto and muzza ,

Thank you for the welcomes.

I have always told my wife that the reason I so many guitars is because God said I can only have one wife ! She seemed to buy that with out too much fuss. However when ever I make a purchase I usually make sure that she gets to buy something she wants as well(for at least $25-50). Since she knows each of my guitars only costs about $200, she is happy with this.

However, and I really feel bad about this, I have become the master of sneaking guitars and amps into the house. Once they are in my finished basement with the rest of the stuff they can be displayed and used with out fear as they blend in when you have a lot of stuff.

To be quite honest about it, I don't really understand why she would get upset because I still have less than 40 guitars !

Regards,

Tom

Tom.....NOW I feel better.....none of my guitars has ever had to be sneaked into the house. My wife knows all that I have and roundly what they cost. In fact, she bought me two of the most expensive ones, the Melissa Etheridge Adamas 12-string and the 2002 Collectors.

Due to room, though, I am in a "one-in, one-out" policy on guitars, so I have to want something pretty badly to dispose of something to get it.

BegginJM,

With some of my vintage electrics it becomes obvious that they are lower in price because they're so old and worn . Like the '64-65 Gretsch Country Gent:

Or the '65 Gibson Sg Special :

And the '63 Fender Strat even has some chips of paint missing, so it's quite obviuosly not worth very much :

Tom

Yep..
Well for the last five years anyway.
There are a ton of photos in the gallery section.
The best photo album to look at is under the name.. Phil Wong.
There is even a 2 disc DVD available showing the events of the last Tour.

Wow, welcome aboard, Dr! You have some great stuff in your listings - O's, Tak's, Taylor's - very nice. Question for you on the Tak TAN15C - is that the tube model? I was playing one here in Syr not too long ago and, though I've always been a fan of the Tak's, that one really impressed me after warming up a bit.

BegginJM,

Here's a few more pices of junk I'm storing as you never know when you might need kindling if we loose power during the winter:
1969 Telecaster,1969 Telecaster Bass and a 1969 Esquire

This one has a funny lookin headstock so it must be pretty inexpensive:

A 1966 Fender Electric XII :

This guitars even has holes in it which I'm sure detracts from it's usability :

Should I stop or can you take more punishment ?!!!!!

Best regards,

Tom

Weaser,

The TAN 15Cis indeed the one with the Cool Tube preamp. The TAN 15C is also the one with the cedar top. It is very warm sounding acoustically and the Cool Tube preamp is the best I've ever heard. I've been bugging Takamine at their website ever since I bought this guitar about when they will release the CoolTube preamps as an accessory. They still won't do it yet. Fortunately I was able to find one on Ebay and have put it in to one of my other Tak's. Nothing like the Cool Tube IMHO. When I bought this guiatr I was not planning to buy anything; but once I heard it, I just had to have it.

Dr. Tom,

Seriously now, that's quite a beautiful collection you have there. Please post pics anytime you would like.. it gives some of us with just a few guitars and wives that check our reciepts, hope for the future. It's tough to have GAS when your wife has a cabinet full of Phazyme Extra strength!

No question - you've got to make an album and put all of these shots in there, Doc. These are beautiful. And if you can't make this year's Tour, can some of us come over and tour your place? :D

On second thought, most of these guys are very respectful with inventory but, on the flip side, they may never leave so you might want to pass on that...

Jim,

Thank you. I outfit my entire band so that they don't have to bring anything to practice. I have been very fortunate and share most (but not all) of my equipment with others.

Here's a few more :

A PRS Hollowbody II:

a '89 Strat Plus Deluxe :

PRS Custom 24 Artist 20th Anniversary:

Hope you enjoy these.

Welcome to the OFC Dr. Tom, and thanks for sharing your story with us! :) I don't own an Ovation 12-string, but have had the opportunity to play them, and they are truly amazing guitars acoustically and plugged in.

That's great to hear! If I'm not playing my guitar, I like listening to my classical CDs, among others. Even better, take my wife out to the city to see a NY Philharmonic performance at Lincoln Center, whenever possible. My favorite Mozart violin concertos are the 3rd and 5th. So far, I only saw a performance of the 3rd with violinist Cho Liang Lin, and the Montreal Symphony directed by Charles Dutoit.

Now Mahler is heavy stuff! The first Mahler CD I purchased was his 5th symphony, which I have to this day. I also managed to see a live performance of that same symphony at Lincoln Center under the baton of Riccardo Chailly leading the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra.

Welcome to the OFC once again! :)

ignimbyte ,

We're really into the Classical Music; I have a 21 year old son who is a Classical composer studying Composition at the Peabody Conservatory for Music at Johns Hopkins in Baltimore. He is graduating a year early this May and hopes to go on to be a conductor. He's spent the last two summers abroad studying Conducting and will be going on to get his Graduate degree next year.

His favorite composer is Mahler;we have really gotten into Mahler because of him. His favorite is Mahler 9(as he refers to it).The Buffalo Philharmonic performed Mahler 9 last year and the place went crazy; you would have thought you were at a rock concert; it was just spectacular ! Our son has really gotten us into a lot of classical music that we never would have appreciated before and it has all been just outstanding.

Tom

Thanks for the inspiration Tom. Your response got me to put Mahler's 9th in my stereo, and I'm listening to it right now, as I'm typing away. The recording I have is with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, under the direction of Pierre Boulez - a composer in his own right. If this monstrous piece of music sounds fantastic in my stereo, I can only imagine how a live performance would be like!

My wife plays the violin and one of her teachers was a graduate at the Peabody Conservatory. While we knew each other as acquaintances back then, we started getting to know more of each other one night while ushering a String Quartet concert, which featured her teacher. Between greeting the concert-goers and tearing tickets, passing the program and leading them to their seats, we also enjoyed a night of great music by Haydn, Shostakovich and Brahms. Well, the rest was history after that. Lately, I'd been getting into more contemporary stuff with the likes of the 2nd Viennese school [Schoenberg, Berg and Webern], the Orient-inspired music of Messiaen and Alan Hovhaness, as well as the minimal style of Philip Glass, Steve Reich and Terry Riley.

Perhaps someday, it'll be a special treat to attend one of your son's performances...

Thank you. Five days ago those shots could have been shot outside(except that the grass wouldn't be that green). Almost all the snow was gone and 50 degree temps then, bingo, Saturday temps drop and we get 3-6inches of snow.

Also, glad to hear you appreciate syphonic music. My wife and I have sung and performed with the Colorado Symphony Chorus for 19 years, including performances this past weekend.

ProfessorBB,

Thank you. I hear you .I was just looking at an Ampeg sign on ebay but the guy wouldn't send me a picture of it lighted up ! So the search continues ! Do you have any neon ?

I'm on the Board of Trustees for a local College(my undergrad alma Mater). One of my greatest thrills is to attend commencement each year. It is held at Kleinhans Music Hall; where the Buffalo Philharmonic performs. I get to sit on stage with the President and other notable dignataries. There are only 2 rows of us and directly behind us is the Buffalo Phiharmonic Chorus who perform every year. It gives me goose bumps to be so close to so many great voices. One of the Professors of the college(who was there teaching when I was 35 years ago) is in the chorus as well.

I very much appreciate symphonic music and am pleased to know you. I hope you appreciate what a great "gig" you have ! I unfortunately have no talent singing or otherwise; so I buy lots of gear to make up for it. It still hasn't made me play or sing any better !

Best regards,

Tom

Grif,

Thank you. And thanks for noticing the attempt at coordinating the strap to the Guitar.Slipkid, thanks for noticing also. The amazing thing is that most of the Straps were not custom made but just came out of Bob's stock straps . He was very inpressed himself how well it all worked out.

The strap for the white SG Special was semi-custom made. SRV used to wear a strap that was black with white notes so I asked Bob( the strap artisan) to reverse it which he did and it worked out great.

I'm actually thinking about buying this strap for the Ovation. Here is the guitar:

and here is the strap;

Let me know what you think.

The "diamonds" goes with the fret markers well enough and the color is right on.

Millenium
CrimsonLake,

Thank you. For the Millenium you have a number of choices, none of which would be Blue !

Here is my Blue guitar and Strap:

The color of the strap matches the fretboard and back of the guitar; the silver conchos match the birds on the finger board and the gold center of the conchos matches the gold hardware.

For the Millenium I would pick up on the major light colored wood around the soundholes and possibly consider something like this:

Also since the back of your guitar is black you could go with black with some turquoise in the center of some conchos like this:

But I think that because of the large amount of black on the deep bowl I'd go with a black strap and have something custom made to go with the wood tones on the front.

Go here to get ideas:
http://www.guitstrapped.com/Solditems.html

You can get anything you want embroidered onto a leather strap; you are only limited by your imagination. Here is one of the embroidered straps I had made recently; can you guess what one of my hobbies is :

Tom

Hey this is great! I'm making copies of all of Dr. Tom's pics, then leaving them spread out on the kitchen table. When Mrs. Professor sees this, she might conclude that my little collection in the studio is, in fact, quite modest. On the other hand, let's start watching the papers . . . some touring group may be missing their equipment truck!

Tom, you are jumping to the intro page. Either go back to www.ovationfanclub.com or just click on Ovation Fan Club at the bottom of the page and either will get you the green bar.
Professor, you found someone crazier than you. Good luck with trick number 5 or 6 in my list of tricks that didn't work. I tried it with Dave's Ovation Gallery and even visited his house and showed her pictures. "Look, honey. Here's a guy whose sicker than me!" or "You thing I'm bad, look at this guy!" has never been a very good argument for me. I just can't understand why she's so unreasonable.

Those tricks usually backfire and then you find yourself in deeper trouble !!

Funny you should mention an equipment truck: I belive It was on the PRS discussion Board about 3 months ago that a touring band had their equipment truck stolen with most of their gear. In a few days they were supposed to play in my home town. So I emailed them and told them that I was willing to equip their entire band for the show. They were more than surprised. They did get their van back as the police nabbed the guy trying to sell some of the stuff. So they didn't need my equipment but they invited me to watch their show for free from backstage; unfortunately I couldn't make it.

Regards,

Tom

Hey, Doc, tell us about the band. The bands' name? What style of music? Do you gig, record or just do it for fun?

We've got close friends in the Kenmore section who we see a couple times a year. They're big music fans as well and when we go through, we usually find ourselves going out to dinner and then wind up going out to catch a live act somewhere. Do you have a "home" outlet?

Here's a strap for the Adamas Millennium. This one is made by the guy Dr. Tom recommends. It's available for $59.00. He calls it "Outer Limits" (might be too much blue though!)

edit: on second thought, it only accents the fingerboard and headstock. i like the good Doctor's choice better.

Lanaki,

I actually did consider that one because of the fretboard inlays on the Millenium. The Fretboard inlays are more subtle and the strap is a bit too much over the top with the planets, so I eliminated it from contention.

Tom and Randy - I did notice that one - reminded me of a bowling alley during midnight bowling :-)

I like the light tan one - I could see customizing it with some kind of a subtle nod to the planet theme.

Weaser P,

The band's name is "FoxChapel".There are 6 of us: 3 guitars(I also play a ztar),bass, drummer and female vocalist We play music from the 60's& 70's; a lot of British Invasion , Beatles , Byrds, Van Morrison, Stones,Jefferson Airplane, Fleetwood Mac, Credence,Travelling Wilbury's,The Band,The Who,The Kinks,Moody Blues, the Seekers,Everly Brothers, the Hollies, the Turtles etc,etc . We are all over 50. We only play private parties, Banquets or Benefits. That way we can start playing at 7or 8 and be done before my bed time ! We've just recorded afew of our covers as a demo(I don't know why , but it was fun !). We Really do it for fun and to play out every now and then.

Tom

CrimsonLake,

The Tan one would work but so would a Black one with accents of the wood epaulets in it; or planets or anything as long as the colors were right.

Dr Tom;

Great stuff! I especially love old Fenders. What's the story on the Pro-Reverb head? Was that custom ordered or is the cab chopped? Fender never made a production piece like that.

Wayne,

You are very astute ! The Pro Reverb Head is a vintage original 1965 Pro reverb amp . I took the chassis out of the Original Pro Reverb 2x12" Cabinet and put it in an empty Dual Showman Reverb Head cabinet. No chopping or mod's were required.

If you look at my other amps you will see that I did the same thing with two 1968 Fender Super Reverb amps. Their chasses were mounted in empty Band Master Reverb Heads; again , no mods required. So I can switch them back to original any time I want. They are much lighter without their speaker cabs:

Tom

Weaser P,

I almost forgot; you can hear an mp3 of our band at the recording guy's site. Choose "Sample" from the menu at the top. Then click on Cover Band:
http://www.gsrecording.com/samples.htm
It's not all that representative because we play more fast songs than slow ones; because we love to Rock ! But this does sound like us.

Nice! Unfortunately the powers that be won't allow me in front of a recorder but you'll find that other members here post their work from time to time so don't be shy with any new recordings. Even a youtube posting from time to time (search for Lanaki's youtube vid, the OFC Jam or, if you're really ready...Freddy & The Fishsticks, which was recorded at last year's OFC Factory Tour).

Hi Dr T;

Yes, I did notice the other abbreviated amps after I posted...cool!

You have some great drip-edge and blackface examples there, too. I'm a tweed, blond, and brownface guy myself, but only have one of each...nothing quite so extensive as your great collection.

Grif,

Thank you. Our female vocalist truly has an outstanding voice. She was a more recent addition to the band ; with a year.

I'm happy to stick around as the people here are just great and very friendly. Not all forums give me the same feelings as this one; truly unique !!

Wayne,

The tweed, blond and brownface amps are great amps. I spent my high school days in the Blackface & Silverface era so these amps not only sound good but are also part of my past ! The great thing about the drip edged amps is that the ones I have are all Blackface electronics!.

I just don't think that's completely accurate. In many cases each of us just has a different take, and therefore a slightlydifferent question or observation on the topic at hand.

In some cases perhaps more on the nose, than others. But one never knows what one finds in the most obscure references .

Well, I've always wanted a 12 string 'O' and a former regular here had one at a decent price. (Far as I know we're all decent sorts here. Rap sheet aside.)

Structurally, this one had seen better days and been repaired and refinished by hobbyists. At 10' it looks fine, but it's survived a lifetime of hurt and still plays and feels fine. The engineering on Ovations has to be about the best in the industry....not that I'd have anything to compare, out here at the edge of the known world and all.

Plugged in, it's wonderfully full. The shallow bowl would not be my first preference, but when you're wading in the leftovers end of the market you take what you find.

I could recommend it. I'd prefer to have something that matched my custom Balladeer more, natural finish, deep bowl, and all, but it's nice to have the 12 string option to fill out my sound now.

The first song this guitar wanted to play with me (yes, they all talk....and no I'm not. I have papers to prove it, do you?) was Norwegian Wood. We haven't written anything together yet.
