What bracing pattern would a 1974 Legend have? I have an early 80's model that has the A bracing, but don't know what year the change over took place. Anyone have any opinions of the difference in sound between the early models and the ones with the new bracing? Thanks

It was about this time that the factory went to the A-style bracing in the Legends.

I played one of the acoustic prototypes of this guitar that went to Gregg Allman at the time. It sounded sooooooooo good!! This was the same guitar that Glen Campbell is pictured with on the sleeve of the "Reunited" album with Jimmy Webb.

Clarification: I meant the same style Legend as the Gregg Allman guitar, not the exact same guitar.

The 70's Legends (not custom Legends, nor the prototypes, like the one Goober mentioned) all had the VT bracing. It sucked. It sounded plastic in the bass. Just the pits. The A bracing pattern was/is wonderful.

I dunno Moody, I've seen a lot of mid-70's Legends with the A pattern in them. Time to pull out the catalogs and bet! LOL!!

Ok, we're talking just the Legend here.

My 1977 catalog shows the Legend with VT-11 bracing. The next catalog I have is from 1980 and it shows the Legend with A bracing.

Your guess is as good as mine as to when the change occurred.....

Different album..."The Moon's A Harsh Mistress," "I Keep It Hid," "Wishing Now," etc. were on "Reunited" with the Ovation Legend A-braced all over it.

I agree that "Still Within The Sound Of My Voice" is a great CD in its own right.

Steve,

Glen would have been playing either his Elite prototype or the 87 Collectors by 1987...

So the 1974 Legend would have the VT-11 Bracing? My Legend and Custom Legend, both early 80's models, have the A bracing, and sound great. Haven't ever played one with the old style bracing. Are you guys saying the old ones don't sound as good? I have a chance to buy one pretty cheap, but can't really check it out in person.I don't want it if it sounds like crap.

Goober, I googled up a copy of the Reunited album tracks, and got them confused. It's been a while, I didn't know there was another album since the original 'Reunion' album in 1974..

There are those round here who don't particularly like the sound of the VT bracing, at least as far as pure cue-stick sound. There are however only very few folks round here who don't think the A-braced guitars sound good purely cuestick...

go to the local hardware store and buy yerself a telescoping mirror and take a peek inside... then go to Jerome's site and compare what you see with the bracing illustrations on his site

This was the double album tour after "Laid Back." Same band that was on "Laid Back." I grabbed Gregg as an endorsee for Ovation while they were rehearsing for the tour on Jekyll Island. He bought an A/E Pacemaker we had with us, too. Gregg played in a really cool open tuning style. Surprisingly, he was actually quite a good acoustic player.

That was a helluva band!
I was at one of the shows that the subsequent "GreggAllmanTour" album was recorded at (CapitolTheater, Passaic, NJ). In fact, that was my very first concert!
