I would also add Flogging Molly at the HOB in Atlantic City but that was more a case of my proximity to the loudspeakers. |

Quote from Wikipedia: "The heavy metal band Manowar is one claimaint of the title of "loudest band in the world", citing a measurement of 129.5 decibels in 1994 in Hanover. The Guiness Book of World Records once listed it as the record holder for the loudest musical performance for an earlier performance in 1984. However, Guinness does not recognize Manowar's later claim, because it no longer includes a category of loudest band, reportedly because it does not want to encourage ear damage." |

as regarding the most powerful amp.,the most powerful speakers known to me are probably 24" ( TwentyFour inch. )woofers made by Precision Devices ( England )
http://www.precisiondevices.co.uk/home.asp
Such High Power systems would/should be driven electronically ( amp. for each speaker ) so that would be a good estimate , otherwise..the biggest guitar valve amp. that I know of was the SIMMS WATTS 200 ,200 wtts. European (400 wtts. American) with 8 x KT 66 in the output stage if I remember well ;)

Ted Nugent. A mild-mannered, straitlaced guy from my dorm had tickets. It turned out that he just had to stand in the front, right next to the PA speakers, and rock out. After a while I couldn't take it and had to to move to the back. Fun show though!
Jeff Beck. I went with my jazz-fusion buddies to see a double bill of the second Mahavishnu Orchestra and Beck. I think it was at the Shrine in LA. Mahavishnu was just short of being too loud; Beck was unbearable. After two or three numbers we left.

I don't know, about the loudest speaker, but you can use this calculator to reckon how much power you need. Most people have too much. You'll want about 90db at the back of the room. (hearing loss starts at 90db) For example, at 4 meters (a typical backroom of a coffee house) a 10W amp will work.
Use this calculator to figure out how many watt\'s you\'ll need.
That said, the biggest array of speakers I've seen was the Grateful Dead's, but the sound was clear. |

So loud is this band that the audience usually listens from the safe distance of thirty seven miles away in a well-built concrete bunker, while the band plays "virtual instruments" from an orbiting space craft. Disaster Area's lavish performances often cause major seismic catastrophes and permanent planetary damage. They go so far as to crash a space ship into the nearest sun to create a solar flare for the grand finale. At the time when the story's main characters meet him, in The Restaurant at the End of the Universe, the lead singer Hotblack Desatio has been sentenced to spending a year dead "for tax reasons", though he is still psychically alive.... |

That`s a nice little fun thing ,exept it forgets to mention at what frequency it will be used for ?? Soo...if we have to get technical ..
Nah,that would fall outside the scope of this board, but the statement of 90 db at the back ( at 1 Khz.?? ) being enough is odd,to say the least ! (that would be very little ) even GWB`s congregation who are toting stethoscopes to his sunday gig would tell him to buy a decent amp... but to keep things simple, when you look at the back of headphone wrappings, you will see that most phones will go up to 105 db,crank your discman to full power until distortion is reached, than that would tell you how loud that is( ouch !),turning down - 3 db = half that (50 %)now how can you tell ?,..simply ,when you perceive it as half as loud, then that is - 3 db and - 6db is thus a quart( 25 %) half as loud from when you turned it down last ,so now we are down at 105 - 6 = 99 db !that would be an amiable listening level, turn that - 3 db down ,and you are ready to join GWB`s stethoscope congregation .. yet 99 db - 3 db= 96 db,is still four (4) times louder than the calc`s 90 db ,at that level ,you would need a very good stethoscope indeed ! That I called DEEP PURPLE for the loudest band ever, comes from their hey-day`s,when they were making it a point to be " Louder than Everything Else " ,since then ,they have been copied by many, but being the first band to use that concept,I rate them nr.1 !

8 string bass only strung with 4 string is what it looks like to me. But judging from the sound it's giving I think it's full 8 string with octaves or something... |

The loudest (perceived) show that I personally found was a Yes concert in Manhattan in the early 80's ("90215" Tour). The sound system was just FAR too loud for the indoor venue they were playing. It was the only time EVER that I wadded some pieces of tissue paper into my ears . . . . |

I don't think the guitars were loud so much as the impulse from the amplified drums. This marked the beginning of my more-is-not-better period that I continue to believe to this day. Only bright spot to that concert was the 20 minute respite when Bono slipped on stage and broke his arm. He returned to finish the concert with his arm in a sling qualifying him for the iron man perfromance award. |

Clinton played for an hour at volume levels that I had never experianced before. (I had seen Deep Purple and any band that came to Charlotte since about 1971) My ears hurt so bad that I think I lost some permanent hearing that night. The real sad part was when George Benson walked out solo in his opening number, no one could hear him, our ears were ringing so badly. It's a shame too, I went to see Benson. |

I saw the Scorpions at the Jones Beach theater 3 years ago. The band opened up for Deep Purple and they were waaaaay louder. Insanely loud, kinda like being assulted by sound. I couldn't even take one song. We stayed ouside of the theater by the concession stands until the show was over, then went in and enjoyed the DP show. |

"Disaster Area" a Plutonium rock band generally held to be not only the loudest rock band in the Galaxy, but in fact the loudest noise of any kind at all. Disaster Area fans judge that the best sound balance is usually to be heard from within large concrete bunkers some thirty-seven miles from the stage, while the musicians themselves play their instruments by remote control from within a heavily insulated spaceship which stays in orbit around the planet - or more frequently around a completely different planet.
Disaster Area's leader was called Hotblack Desiato who was spending some time as dead, for tax purposes. Desitato is named after a Real Estate agency based in Islington, London. HGTTG writer Douglas Adams said he was struggling to find a name for the character and, spotting a Hotblack Desiato sign, liked the name so much he telephoned to ask permission to use the Company's name for the character. Apparently, the company's staff later received phone calls telling them they had a nerve naming their firm after Adams’ character. |

Yep, you read that right. Veterans Stadium in Long Beach, CA, I think, is where I saw them at. Don't remember if it was '81 or when, but they were EAR SPLITTING LOUD! Far and away, from that day to this, the loudest band I've ever heard.
Flash forward twenty-plus years, and when I saw them at the Pacific Ampitheater in Costa Mesa back in 2005, they were too quiet. The crowd kept shouting for them to turn up the volume. It was hard to hear, but in spite of that, the band put on a great show.

All I remember is good buzz, and good thing, 'cos it would have been painfully loud, even with the earplugs.
Is it possible that 'last tour' didn't make it to the west coast?
Looks like there will be no more XTC product. The last two; Apple Venus vol. 1 & 2, were as good as anything they've ever done...but I'm biased. |

| When I was 15 or 16 I saw Cream play their 4th or 5th gig ever (no record released as yet) in the gym of Warwick University. No stage - straight on the floor. I watched Ginger tune his drums with a hammer, and then only a mic stand was between me and Eric. Maybe 2 feet - when he sang real loud I got the spittle. About 3 feet behind him were 2 Marshall 100 stacks, both set to 9. In total wattage I've heard a hundred/thousand louder bands, but at a distance of 5 feet it was pain beyond belief. But I stayed. |

Location: Hicksville, NY | I saw Pantera on the winter of 1993 at the Palace Theater in Albany, NY. I had my share of hard/metal rock acts before that, but this was the loudest of all. I never knew anything about this band, but they were loud and heavy, that these guys made Megadeth sound like wimps. A good ole friend of mine was a writer for the local magazine, and asked me to tag along, as he was writing a review for the show. My bro. in law went as well.
It was also the first time I saw a mosh pit, at close range. as I stood [in disbelief] watching them audience go at each other, pushing, kicking, punching, jumping, diving, from the seventh row. About 25 minutes into their set, some drunk jumped my bro. in law and me from behind. Out of our anger, we lifted up this dude and threw him into the mosh pit. The funny thing was that the dude came back thanking us for he was having such a great time. The audience trashed the stage at the end of their encore performance, while simultaneously shouted the words, "Cowboys from hell!"
To my surprise, the show ended peacefully, without any fights or riots. I guess getting badly bruised in a rock concert can be therapeutic in some form or another... |

Location: Hicksville, NY | I think it was in the summer of 1997, when I saw the Animals and the Yardbirds, perform at the New York State Fair in Syracuse. It was a free show at the Cole Muffler Court [I don't know what it's called today though], and it was a great night for oldies rock and roll.
During this show, the drummer was the only original member of the Animals, but they still played a lot of their great songs. Even their singer was an awesome Eric Burdon sound-alike.
When the Yardbirds hit the stage, their music was really loud that I end up watching their set from a distance. Almost immediately, close to half of the audience disappeared too. I doubt if there were any original members in it, but they too played a lot of their classic songs. They even ended their set with "Dazed and Confused" which felt like Led Zeppelin made the reversal to become the Yardbirds again. |
