Location: Tychy, Poland | i have an oppourtunity to buy a '69 fender stratocaster. it's in very good/near mint condition. it plays well, sounds well.. but seller (my friend - btw) aks for equivalent of $1500. What is it worth in US? i don't know much about electric guitars. I personally didn't like any before playing on that fender. |

That guitar in good condition would be worth $2000 minimum in the U.S., probably more. Depends on color, if all the parts are original, etc. If it's intact, it's hard to think you would lose any money on it if you decided to sell it.

Second the "run, don't walk" approach. |

Location: Tychy, Poland | ok, i'll post pictures here in about 2 weeks (that guy went for a vacation to turkey). I'd have to take loan to buy that guitar, but if it's that much worth, i think i'll risk it.
his father bought that guitar from some german player in mid-80s and since then it was used sporadically in local cultural centre, until my friend started playing (about 7 years ago). But he plays mostly classical music and he wants to buy fagot. |

and it's very expensive - playable fagot costs about $4000, good one - $10000 |

And if you get that question in a crossword,
the answer is Oboe.
I'd rather have a Stratocaster. |

There several ways to determine the age of that guitar.
1. Fender Stamped dates on the heel of the neck.(the neck has to be removed to see it)
2. also there will be a date for the body either in the neck cavity or the pickup cavity.
3. The volume and tone controls should have date codes on them.
Here is a link that might help

i'm still not convinced that i should pay 1/3 of my yearly salaries for a guitar but... i hope it's worth risk of living in paper-box. |

Location: Tychy, Poland | Just returned that guitar to owner, i've got it for whole day and played on it a lot.
It's ok. Well made, doesn't have any cracks.
Paint is in B= condition. Pickups are original, in good condition. Tremolo works.
It misses original Fender plate on back, but neck is dated december 1968.
It's all fine but...
i didn't found any reason, why i should go to work for next 4 months just to pay for that guitar. I borrowed Yamaha Pacifica from my friend, and - to be honest - i didn't hear very big difference.
I was playing on Hughes & Kettner Edition 1 60W amp which is pretty decent.
To be honest - i think prices for those guitars on e-bay are FAR to high.
Maybe i'm just electric-guitar-ingorant, i dunno. If i had 1,500$ to spend right now i'd buy AER 60W Combo and wood for making my own guitar.
Ps.
It's dark-red |

There are plenty of things you can spend that money on. Like rent, food and/or women. |

If it is indeed an almost original red '68 strat ('67 an '68 strats are particularly rare because at that time they were selling so poorly that Fender almost quit making them!) you are making a big mistake for not picking it up. If you decided in the end that you didn't like it, you could sell it for 10 to 15 times that amount.
Get it and learn to love it later! |

Location: Tychy, Poland | from your point of view it's a steal but look at this this way: it's like spending $8000 for a guitar that you're not convinced that it'll fit you.
and you won't sell it for much more in poland, and it CAN'T be send out of poland because it was imported as a vintage instrument and it's registered in some sort of registry. Guy who imported it didn't pay tax etc. but for any sale outside of Poland, you need to get permission from heritage conservator, which is very hard to get. |

That's definitely a VERY good buy! Congrats!
Yesterday, I went to We Buy Guitars, located at Bellmore in Long Island to have my guitar for a set-up. After John finished working on it, he showed me their gallery, and all I could say was "wow!" I was staring at a room full of vintage guitars [electrics mostly]. There were strats in there that were selling for 20 grand and more. The folks there even demo-ed, briefly, a '59 Les Paul that has a $1/2 mil price tag -- sounds like joke, but that's really what the guitar's selling for.
Back to the topic, in light of what I experienced during my visit at the above-mentioned music store, your purchase was a darn good one. Enjoy it for many, many years to come. :)
p.s.
-- for OFC members in the NYC and LI area, who need their guitars serviced / set-up every now and then, I recommend John at We Buy Guitars. I'm very happy with the job that he did on mine. |
