Oddly, this seems like the best outcome. |

Wood preserivatives like Thompson's Waterseal as well as oil based paints are flammable in the can and immediately after application. Once the solvents evaporate, they are no longer particularly flammable.
Smoking is not a good idea while applying these coatings. Neither is allowing drop cloths or rags to pile up if they are soaked with this stuff. They've been known to spontaneously burst into flames (spontaneous combustion.) :eek: I'm sure the containers sufficiently warned the users against improper use.
If you're applying these indoors, it is probably a good idea to open windows, doors, then turn off the gas so all pilot lights are snuffed out.
How this fire started is yet to be determined. I suspect it is safe to say that the speed with which the fire spread was due to the drying wood preservative. A risk we all take when using these products. :rolleyes: |

I had my hopes up for Nicholas Cage, but anyway...
In the end it will all burn! It would have been a great place to share the history though - depending on who got to write it. |

Location: Rego Park, NY, | My family had a drug store in Chinatown on the Bowery, #6 Bowery to be exact.The drugstore/apothecary was originally openned in 1805. It was located in what was originally known as the Five Points section.This is the same area that was shown in The Gangs Of New York movie. My mothers's wish,hope and dream was for me to take over the business with my dad and my uncles. The business was closed and sold to a bank in 1981.
For anyone in the NYC area the apothecary(Now the Abaccus Federal Savings Bank) is located directly across from the statue of Confucius in Confucius Plaza near the base of the Manhattan Bridge.
Just about eight years ago my mother found black and white pictures of the drug store. On the back was stamped "Property of the Smithsonian Institute. In one picture there was a calendar on the wall. I had that section blown up. The date on the calendar was June 1930. I had negatives made of all the prints and had also taken pictures of the store when I began my interest in photography. Part of me was sorry to see the store go but the other half was relief,But I won't go into that now.
I can bring these photos to the OFC Tour if anyone is interested,let me kknow. |

Location: Rego Park, NY, | I'll put in on my list of things to bring. I forgot to mention that I also had 11x14 prints made from the negatives. That way I could reduce the handling of the photos. Therefore the print that I will bring are not the originals so you won't be able to see the Smithsonian stamp. I hope that's okay Jason. |

There are all kinds of cool places around there, like the underground shopping mall near the OTB that pops out on doyers, where rival gangs would ambush each other. It must have been fun as a kid. |

Location: Rego Park, NY, | I used to play hide and seek with my brother and sister and cousins in the drugstore. My dad grew up in Chinatown. He played ball at Columbus Park.
His friends also had a room that was down a small staircase on Mulberry Street. They would go there to play cards. They also had a dragon costume that was used during the Chinese New Year celebrations. That thing used to scarethe hell out of me when I was young. I also used to ask my parents for change to go and play in the Chinatown fair and the San Genero feast. I forgot to mention that I grew up in Brooklyn and Queens. I never lived in Chinatown. |
