Location: Corvallis, OR | First, I have a used, still in box, "Guitar Tracks" by Calkwalk. A recording program especially designed for guitarists. I used it a little, found it OK.You can have it for FREE, if you pay postage (I assume postage is around $5 to anywhere in continental US.)Box contains software, cables and manual.
SECOND, does anyone have a few sentences of informed opinion about the "MobilePre" Digital recording software for a computer ?
It seems like the ideal way to go for a home based amateur guitarist, according to the advertising blurb. But I would rather rely on someone with hands on experience :-) |

The most important feature with the system I end up with is SIMPLICITY. My little handheld Pandora has a ga-zillion features that I don't need and won't use. To many features get in the way of the basics. It is a marvel of engineering and design but you almost have to be an engineer to use it.
I'll wager that most of us here are looking for the features that I'm looking for. |

Once y'get past the initial learning curve, it's really pretty easy. All of the effects and bells&whistles CAN be a bit daunting, but y'don't HAVE t'use 'em (but they DO help you in keeping all of your tracks from sounding "the same" . . .
We just bought a Sony 40" flatscreen, and I suggested putting it in the MusicRoom so that I could use it as a monitor . . .
. . . it's been two weeks, and she's STILL laughing at that one . . . |

I suppose it would help if I read the manual.
Printed out it's about 4 1/2 inched thick,
written in Incompra-geek and just sits on the coffee table
smirking at me. |

Now I seem to remember offering to get up early and help you tune up all those ukes before you get up in front of all those people to teach. I dunno now. I seem to have somehow lost confidence in whatever modest musical ability I ever had.
I will now be showing up to the tour as a broken man. A mere shell of that coconut-boobed, happy go lucky person I once was.
I think I'll now have to change my name here on the board. Slipkid may have to become... Sadkid.
It's like... how I feel man. |

I can't wait for Temp's seminar either. I've just got a ton of home recording questions. Been playing my various gits for over twenty years and never once considered recording. Now, I'm dying to give it a shot but have no idea on where to start. Just seems like there's so many different directions to go in - pc software, stand alone units, hand-helds...do I need condensor mikes, speakers, a mixer...how far down this road am I going to get before my bride hands me my head on a platter for playing games...wouldn't it just be easier to drive to CO and break into T's place while he's away on vacation somewhere...AAAHHHHH!!! |

After a few hours recording we could email the rough mixes back and forth using cubase and submit a couple nice tunes for the next OFC CD. :) |

A cheaper setup that works will is to use a dual smaller monitors. I have a set of Dells, a 20" and a 19" flat LCD's. which lets you spread things out quite nicely.

Wouldn't that require 2 video cards and 2 sets of cables? |

Never put much importance into one for my DAW....not like I was playing video games and needed fast graphics. |

I bought a new computer at Christmas and just added the monitor from my old one.

I know that you can put up to 5 cards, each with two outputs into your computer and mix digital and plain vga. I've connected up to 6 monitors at a time to one computer. |

How do you mean it in reference to a DAW? |

Or, run the DAW on one and a softsynth or Reason or whatever on the other. |

The frame is only about 1/2" so spreading things across two monitors is a breeze. I also use Matrox video cards which allow for some really nice layouts. |

Don't know if the newer generations from Nvidia and ATI are optimized for this feature or not. |
