All music books should be spiral bound!

I'm so tired of fighting solid spine books. They are a pain to keep flat on the music stand. Pages turn on their own volition and sometimes the whole damn book closes. Eventually the spine cracks and the pages start falling out. Most of them have narrow margins so you can't shear the spine and get them spiral bound without chomping into the text.

It's just a no brainer to me, and yet "they" keep right on publishing solid spine books. WTF is up with that!?

Sorry about that, i just had to get that off my chest. [/rant]

gh1, you could probably take your book to a quick-print shop and have them trim the spine off (only need to take enough off to break the glue joint) and put a plastic spiral binding on for just a few bucks. the spiral binding doesn't encroach into the page as much as three-ring binder holes.

Just a thought.

Thanks for the idea. However i took one of my books (Ted Greene's Modern Chord Progressions) to Kinko's to do just that, and it ended up chomping holes in all the margin chord diagrams.

Pehaps some books would work better? I'll check it out.

All my serious college music theory books were spiral bound. Still have some of those. Yep, solid spine books are cheaper to produce but a big inconvenience. Quality scripts, orchestral scores, etc. are all spiral bound...

The glued spine process you are describing is called "perfect binding" in the industry. It is used because it is really cheap, requiring no hand labor.

I am in the business of manufacturing custom looseleaf binders . Of course, I believe that ALL books should be published in looseleaf format! But that's not too likely. As mentioned above, any mechanical binding system (be it plastic coil or looseleaf) needs to be accounted for at the time the printing is done.

Anyone interested in an "OFC" binder? If there is enough interest, I could make a run of binders for the group. Might be a nice way to organize our fake sheets. I'm not looking to make money on this, just cover costs. Figure $6 each + $5 shipping for a two inch ring binder.

Al, would it be cool if I started a new thread for this?

Here is a quick mockup we threw together.

IF YOU ARE INTERESTED, SEND AN E-MAIL TO jmiller@speedbinder.com The price is $6 + $5 to mail it to you.

Does anyone know if Kaman/Ovation is cool with this? Is there someone I should contact to get a release on the logo?

Add $2 if we want to go to 3". But this is a "one size fits all" thing...They will either all be 2" (rings, not spine) or 3".

i also agree this topic of OFC binders should have its own thread and be billboarded. (hmmm...obvious jokes about bill in that word!)

I think it's a great idea--I'm in--but there's even more to the rant. I don't like pages that won't fit into the letter-sized plastic sleeves because they're either too big or too small. Why can't the music books all be the same convenient size??

Definatly something different than what has been offered before.

Omaha, you'll need to work out logos and use of the "Ovation Fan Club" trademark with Miles. You should probably squeeze an "http://www.ovationfanclub.com" in there somewhere as well. Probably best to PM him to make sure he sees the thread.

Cool idea, by the way. I'd be in for a couple.

I agree with David. I'm sure Miles would work with you on this great idea.
Lanaki, I have more than a 2 inch binder will hold, but I recently divided it into 2 smaller binders. I would rather buy 2 or 3 smaller ones than one big one because my music stands won't hold that much weight. I also tried to divide it up so that the stuff I use all the time is in one binder.
As someone who uses large binders of documents all the time, I advise to use more smaller ones. It's easier to find stuff. Truthfully, I need to just throw away the stuff I don't use much, but lawyers tend to think that more paper is better.

I'm actually trying to locate a really "good" 6" binder ("good" defined as one with rings that positively lock and STAY that way . . .)

Our current FakeBook is a 5" binder with a couple hundred songs in plastic sheets that's FULL, gets used aLOT, and I've got the rings taped shut with a round or two of vinyl tape . . .

Ultimately, I really want one of these:

I was talking about those with the music director at my church the other day...just think how great it will be when you can program an entire day's worth of material, and have it automatically appear (via WiFi) on everyone's music stand. No copies, no missing pages...perfect!

The 6" binder you seek doesn't exist. Conventional loose leaf construction doesn't cut it at those sizes.

There is a style called a "swing hinge" binder that is absolutely bulletproof. But they wouldn't work well on a music stand. The bad news is the wholesale cost of the ring metals alone is like $40 ea.

Just filler, Jeff. They use that when they just want to show you how many neat little lines (note both straight and squiggly ones) will fit on one page. Ingenious if you ask me but I always wait for pictures anyway.

Cliff... I've seen your fake book. You need more than a 6" binder... you need the Dewey Decimal System!

Hate that system. I'm convinced Dewey probably got beat up too many times as a nerdy kid and that was his revenge.

And only nine hundred bucks! Whatta Deal!

I don't read music-music, just chord and tab. I used to scan my pages into the computer, then read off the screen.
Now I got a bunch of songs in my computer, from various sites.
But since I mostly play simple stuff, I usually just glance at the arrangement, and go "Oh, yeah..."
Maybe have to be reminded what the 'turn-around', middle-eight, or whatever.
But I agree that all Music Books should be Spiral Bound!

I load the tabs for songs onto the lyric section for songs on my ipod, then I can take a look at them wherever, without worrying about carrying binders around. It's definitely not perfect, but handy to have around.

You haven't seen my music stand.
$40 wouldn't be a problem.
Send me details, please.

The FreeHand-thing IS cool but "pricey".
I've contacted a local dealer, but he hasn't gotten back to me, yet . . .

You can SCAN lyrics/chords in and save as .pdf's.

I thought about bastardizing an old laptop t'do this, but the FreeHand is clean & simple . . .
