I closed a thread tonight and I am not sure if I should have done it or not. But there seemed to be enough question about it for me to shut it down.

The suspicious part to me was the opening of multiple threads to accomplish the same goal. Why not just keep the original one going?

The bottom line is that this community has been more than generous to many members. some individuals have gone over and above the call of duty and I have told them so in person or on the phone. I have personally participated in some of these requests and have helped to supply gear or whatever.

We are all adults. if you want to contribute do so, BUT also be aware that this is the internet and scam artists are out there. If is smells like a llama it probably is a llama.

With that said I would not object to anyone wanting to help someone out by selling instruments thier instruments and listing them on the site. When it comes to monetary donations there I feel you have to use your better judgement and make your own decisions.

We are a rather tight knit unified group of people We all play Ovation and Adamas guitars, that makes us outcasts from the start. One of "US" that needs help will certainly tug at our heartstrings. But again use your judgement, if you cannot get enough information or do not feel you have the proper information to participate in something of this nature DON'T DO IT.

I have no clue if the latest solicitation was legit or not. The bottom line is ultimately it does not belong here. Many of our membbers belong to their own civic groups, religious organizations charitable organizations etc. and I am positive they do their own good works in the community.

thanks
and sorry for being so long winded
al

edited to add... SEVERAL of the people we helped on this site no longer participate or participate on a merely peripheral basis... think about that!!!

One of the longest coherent posts you've ever made, Al.

Also very well stated.

My comments are at the bottom of the first one.

As far as I'm concerned you did the right thing.

Thanx Al... Kinda dismayed that you had to deal with that...

But I GOTTA ask... What Does a Llama smell like?

[The first sentence was quite sincere. The second... ]

Very similar to an Alpaca But the alpaca is much cuter and often douses strawberry essence behind its ears.

It depends if its coming at you or walking away. I missed the initial whatever because I've been trying something new... playing my guitars or working in the shop.

If anyone feels sorry for me send guitar parts.

Or wood.

Watch out for them thar Llamas, they spit atcha.
Al, you did the right thing.
Regardless of any financial crunch, I wouldn't even ask you guys to buy a guitar for more than it's really worth.
But ask for money??????
NO, no, no, no no,no, nnooo.
I freaked when I saw how you all flaunt your posessions so proudly.
My studio was robbed.
Make sure you have alarms and extra insurance on everything.
Those people suck.
If they can't suck you dry, then they'll suck your studio out.
I'm still not over it.
Deep breath, count to ten...
GIVE NOTHING TO ANYONE, because once you do, they think you owe them.
I have vented.
It was wonderful.

It WAS the right choice.

Give anonymously to the United way or Salvation Army and certainly to PBS substations.

I will never again give to someone who thinks I have so much it is now my responsibility to keep on giving to the point of having equal to or less than they.

Hey, now that you mention it, I'd like an old Fender PA-100 tube PA with dual stacks of 4-10" cones.
Traded that off and was soooo sorry.

I used to know a guy...
who dumpster dove for the best veneers in town.
It was in Portland, OR. He really showed me the town!!!
I'm half-kidding.
This guy got Gerber knives and multi-plier parts from the Gerber factory dumpster, the finest veneers left over from the manufacture of large commercial art and funiture and hand-made tiles from Italy left over from State buildings.
You can find the neatest things without ever asking for anything..

My dad used to work at a landfill in Staten Island and he used to bring home all sorts of cool stuff.

THe best was stuff that was seized and dumped - tons of Rolexx watches, blank cassettes, cases of Heinekin. And lots of comic books in great shape.

I spent one day working at the dump with a buddy decades ago. Came home with a complete set of expensive china, (including gravy boat and platter) a radio, and a couple of other things I forget.

Lost the china in a breakup (or was she throwing it at me? It's so long ago.) but the radio worked for decades.

I think it's time to let this subject go, someone tried to do some good here, granted he might have broke OFC policy, but I don't think he should be compared with some sleazy pyramid scheme.

( Q Griff ) "I think it's time to let this subject go, someone tried to do some good here, granted he might have broke OFC policy, but I don't think he should be compared with some sleazy pyramid scheme"

Look Griff, that was a a very Kind and Warmhearted post,...but they went so sugar-sweet about it...and saying ..."If you would like to send the money directly to him I can get his address but he may be losing his home soon. If you like you could send it to me via paypal and I would send him a lump sum and I would absorb the paypal fees"....

I don't think we're outcasts by playing Ovation or Adamas guitars.
I think we just like a particular brand.
No different from Martin, Guild, Gibson, or Taylor players.
If other don't like us because we play hi tech guitar, it reflects on them; not on us.
There are plenty on AAA grade big time acts who use Ovation USA or Adamas guitars. I ran the West Hartford
Agora Ballroom for 3 years. (5000 seat concert hall) I saw more Ovations come through than other brand except possibly Martin.
(they had guitar techs to take care of the Martins)

The only time got I any flax from people it was never a pro player, just immature or snotty amature players.

Look at it this way, few people are more associated with wood acoustic guitars than Johnny Cash. I have photos in a bio book him playing a deep no cut away Elite on stage.
He also played an Elite when he was inducted in the R&R hall of fame.

That pretty good company in my kneck of the woods.

Jason,
I emailed you the pict of Johnny playing the Elite.
I did not want to break the spine to get the whole picture.
Rock & Roll Hall of Fame 1992
Little Richard and Kieth Richards also in the picture.

Maybe you can upload it to the board.
I could not figure out how to do it.

On stage often switched up Guitars alot.
He played 1960s Fender USA acoustics
(Kingsman & Newporters)
Guild D-60, Takamine not sure which model,
and the Ovation Elite. I never saw him with the Legend.

I don't know her email address but Heather lives in Chicago. I'm here for the week and I definately saw her walking by last night as I was out to dinner.

For those Chicagoians here, I ate at a place called Carmine's on Rush and Oak Sts? Do you know the place? Fabulous. The Chicago Blues Festival was last weekend. I arrived on Monday. Great timing.
