This subject has been raised before, but who here hasn’t used a certain amount of deception to disguise the arrival of new gear, and thereby avoid getting completely busted by those with inquisitive eyes and minds? I have a recent example. Within a few weeks after returning from the reunion/tour, three new guitars, among other things, were hanging in the studio. This was all part of my “confuse by distraction/deception” strategy. In short, the strategy is to buy in bulk and rearrange often so as to create confusion and uncertainty as to what is new and what is simply in a different location. In this instance, I was .333 successful (hey, over a lifetime in baseball, this would get you into the Hall of Fame!). She noticed the Koala and the OFC guitar (and who wouldn’t?), but totally missed the Hurricane and two more amps. Her follow-up questions went mostly unanswered. Oh, yeah, I did offer to have all the exterior house trim and window casements repainted, which may have also contributed to the attention distraction strategy.

You are one clever guy. I used the "my wife thinks I only need one guitar" to negotiate a trade of a Celebrity Deluxe for the 99 Collector's and tried it a couple other times unsuccessfully. She busted me sneaking an amp in the house that I hid in the trunk for awhile. It wasn't worth getting busted over an $85 amp, so I've pretty much gone to the "better to ask for forgiveness than permission" approach since.
She's almost as excited over the delivery of the OFC guitar as I am, so she's slowly coming around. Of course, I'm not nearly as "bad" as you are.

Professor,
As a perorming Artist you know the importance of choreography, blocking, timing, making an entrance and making an exit. The tools of presentation, distraction, camoflage and movement are yours. Setting a tone, texture and mood to draw the audience into your story. Brilliant!

But it doesn't work with your fellow performers...

I don't hide anything but I don't advertise either. If I am working on someone else's parts or preparing for a "sale" I make sure she knows. The shipping boxes headed out the door are openly visible. The ones coming in are quickly stored.

I NEVER leave a case or box in the tripping zone where it can draw undue ire!

But alas, for all of my excuses I am on the list of Liars...

I have always tried, "But Honey it was a steal at that price". It doesn't work.

I've tried, " But Honey all the guys in the OFC have one." It doesn't work.

Next I'm going to play only REAL Expensive Guitars at the GC and tell her the prices. Then when I buy an Ovation at a fraction of the price, hopefully she will be relieved.

Until then I'll just buy strings and maybe another capo. :(

After more or less resigning from my car hobby and selling off the rolling stock, a few extra guitars in the closet is hardly worth a second glance in our house.

I'm into the car thing, too, and it can get very expensive. After building the garage for it, I couldn't afford to collect the cars. I gave up on motorcycles at a fairly young age. The price of boats has gone crazy, but my 3 boats cost less than the guitar collection. Replacing the 1985 outboard soon will be expensive.
Golf costs a bunch even though I haven't spent as much on clubs as some spend on a new driver every year.
Skiing is expensive, but my last 3 pairs of skis cost less than one pair for my wife.
I think the problem is I have too many vices and not enough excuses.

Don't go doing that because my wife already knows that PRS's go for at least $200. Some of my newer Ovations have been almost $250. Fortunately those old Fender amps that I find are a good bargain at about $75 each.

Now that I have guitars delivered to my office, it really isn't even a challenge any more.

Regards,

Tom

As I've often said before, I've got an odd problem with my wife. She doesn't like it when I sell guitars ("I cannot condone the selling of a guitar") but has encouraged me to buy guitars that I really want.

My problem is, how do I pay for new guitars?

When we started 30 years ago, my wife had a job and I didn't. We had separate checking accounts, but mine didn't have anything in it. I'd balance it by waiting for the overdraft notices and then putting some money in to cover the overdraft. I'd write counter checks in bars, once on the wrong bank.
The smartest thing I ever did was give her control and the consequent responsibility for our joint account when we moved out here. If I tried to hide anything from her, I'd forget where I put it. Although I don't get the approval that Moody gets, life is good. If she didn't keep me under control, I probably would have blown everything on convertibles or something.

Moody: I hear you! That’s always our big problem...but it keeps GAS under control...My eBay watch list is always loaded...BUT...
I will say this though: when I told her about the tour this year, she said go ahead and go...she took care of the kids for the three days by herself and rearranged her schedule at the hospital for the days off while I was in CT…She's special (anyone who can put up with me is a saint)...I just try and remember the special days for her...and help her out as much as possible...Its just more fun doing things together…

I heard that Al will have them available for the next OFC get-together, complete with a carbon-fiber case and a wheel-barrel of swag for each one. And you can have whatever serial number you want, too, even if someone else already reserved that one.

Actually, on a serious note, did Ovation ever test a spruce-carbon-spruce laminate top? I would guess yes, but I don't remember ever hearing about it.

My wife and I worked out a winning arrangement kind of by accident: I can buy any guitar or piece of gear I want, with the funds I already have to work with. If I want something badly, I've got to sell something else, or make the money I've got stretch. As long as I don't touch our checking account (or the emergency credit cards) I'm good. Anything above that, we have to figure out and decide on together.

So far so good, except when I really want to stretch that budget and can't...that's when GAS hurts.
