Location: Lake Hiawatha, New Jersey | It's been a while since we did one of these, so I figured, "why not"? I was just curious as to what everyone is listening to these days. Here's what's in the changer:
1.) John Mayer - Continuum: This guy is very impressive. This album is a nice mix of styles with some blues, rock, and acoustic stuff. I just saw him in concert and he was awesome. It's nice to see some good, young musicians having success.
2.) Bob Dylan - Modern Times: This CD just gets better and better with every listen. If you're a Dylan fan ... get it!
3.) Elton John - The Captain And The Kid: I just downloaded this and haven't heard the whole thing, but so far, it's very good stuff. I haven't bought a new EJ album in many years, but this one seems to be a winner. It's very much like his 70's stuff.
4.) Rush - Feedback: This is an EP that Rush recorded to celebrate their 30th anniversary. It's interesting hearing them cover Cream, Buffalo Springfield, and The Who among others.
5.)Al Stewart - Rhymes In Rooms (Live): This is a great live acoustic set by Al Stewart featuring Peter White on guitar, accordian, and piano. They both play Ovations on this one which should make it a "must listen" for OFC'ers.
6.) My own crappy Demo CD - 'nuff said :D |

3. David Gilmour - "On an Island": workin' on a couple o'tunes
4&5.) Richard Thompson - "1,000 Years of Popular Music": Thanks AGAIN, MasterJeffrey!
6. John's crappy demo CD: 'nuff said . . . |

- Phish "Farmhouse"
- Counting Crows "Films About Ghosts..."
- Gerry Rafferty "Baker Street"
- Mark Knopflerr and Emmylou Harris "All the RoadRunning"
- James Gang (various tracks)
- Bob Dylan "Modern Times"
- Sade "Lovers Rock"
- Seals and Crofts (various tracks)
- Billie Holiday (various tracks)
- Neil Diamond "Sweet Caroline"
and last but not least
- Sam the Sham and the Pharaohs "Lil' Red Riding Hood"
My mom gave me the new Tom Petty CD for my birthday. It (the CD format, not the music) almost seemed quaint. I've pretty much switched over to 100% Napster at this point.
Of the stuff listed, I'd really recommend the Knopfler/Harris stuff. Wow. She is SOOOOOOO hot. |

Location: Tennessee | Is the Los Lonely Boys album as good as their first? Depends on your perspective. This album is less acoustic, and a bit more produced with organ and horns. More Henry strat with wah and sustain than the previous album which is a-ok with me. Personally, I like the album a lot. Definitely not a victim of the sophomore jinx ... songs for the most part are well written, and the classic LLB dual lead (harmony) vocals shine through. The songs are a bit more personal, including one they do with their Dad (and a guest verse sung by Willie Nelson). If you liked the first album, you'll like this one. Blues ... Texican style.
Was lucky enough to see them live about three weeks ago ... from three rows back. Great musicianship all the way around. Susan Tedeschi opened the show and then came out part way into the show and traded licks with Henry, and her sax player took some measures too. Dad then made an appearance and played a couple of songs with the boys. |

America - "Here & Now" - Recently released. It's . . . "okay". Some "new blood" infused into the usual America sound by Ben Kweller, alumni from Fountains Of Wayne and Smashing Pumpkins, but's still their typical "VelveetaRock".
John Mellencamp - "Freedom's Road" - Not as good as I'd hoped it would be. It's the usual Mellencamp flag-waving MiddleAmericana. The writing/production sounds a bit "rushed". Might need to listen to it a few more times . . .
Lindsey Buckingham - "Under the Skin" - I bought this based on two GuitarMag interviews that I'd read. I'll never do THAT again. There's some pretty good technical guitar playing, but his vocals and overall production just irk me to no end. The CD came THIS close to ending upo in a toll booth at the intersection of the NJTurnpike and I-78 at NewarkAirport.
John Waite - "Downtown(Journey of a Heart)" - Great CD!! Even though some of this guy's stuff was always a bit "pop"-ish, he's got a great voice. He does a duet/re-make of "Missing You" with Allison Kraus that's really pretty
Traffic - "Low Spark . . ." - JustBecuz
Michael Franks - "Rendezvous in Rio" - Typical Franks. Always Good.
(Actually Bill, there's a song on here called "Under the Sun" that you might like. It's all about "escaping Winter" by loading up the wife into the car and driving (from NY State) to the house in Flah . . .) |

Just as she's a friend that one of my depressingly-talented good friends has written for, recorded, produced, and is now managing. There are some local promo gigs going on in the next couple of weeks, and I'm drafted in to be the guitarist. He must be desperate...
Bit of a departure from Rock and Roll for me, but I'm not proud! Bit distorted for my tastes, but I can sort that for the gigs... I've decided following a rehearsal yesterday that it's Breadwinner time, for the first gig at least.

Ooh, and parts of "Tree Full of Secrets," the 18-CD Pink Floyd bootleg/outtakes/unreleased/rarities collection. PF doing a cover of a do-wop song (sorry, can't remember which one, but I can look if anyone's interested) is quite something. |

Interesting bit of post-production, not my cuppa'. I prefer the imaginative covers that were done for the soundtrack for 'I Am Sam.' Don't remix, make your own vision. JMO.

This guy is the brother of a co-worker of mine.
In Turkey, this guy is the "Eric Clapton" of the oud.
Good Stuff.
It was recorded live in Jerusalem, and his percussionist (I can't recall the guy's name right now) is phenOMenal!!!
After listening to it on my drive home, I sat in my MusicRoom and tried to emulate the quick little "fills" that he does with his fingers on my darbuka. Couldn't do it.
Pissed me off to NO end.
Some REALLY cool, complex rhythms/melodies going on here . . . |

Location: big island | 50 years old, staying at home, IN HAWAII, with a couple toddlers would not be too stressful if that's all that was goin' on. i'm also a stepdad to four grown children, two of which live here with us in a three bedroom house. they dropped out of school, don't work, don't have driver's licenses, are about the sloppiest young men i've ever met and their deadbeat dad never taught them respect. these guys are 21 and 19 and both think the world owes them a living. some days, i take it in stride and lean more heavily on the Everlasting Arms and other days i wanna lean on the arms of a different caliber! ;)
oh yeah, almost forgot...my 18 year old daughter is coming to live with us in june. i might be able to do more gigs then cuz i'll have a babysitter though. |

Location: Boise, Idaho | Forget what I said about inviting us over for a visit, Randy. You're welcome here, though. 2 of us in a 4000 square foot house with a 5 car garage, big yard and a pool and a cabin up in the woods. I have to get on a website in order to find someone to talk to. |

... and as the parent of twin three-year-old girls, I can say that being home alone with two toddlers can be plenty stressful. |

~do ya need a housekeeper and a gardener and a mechanic and a poolboy with a pioneering spirit? oh...and someone to take care of your guitar museum while you are traversing the world? someone with two built-in toddlers so that the sweet sound of children laughing fills the 4000 plus square feet of air?
please accept this post as my informal application. rest assured we will leave the 19 and 21 year olds to fend for themselves here.
(man....i shoulda, coulda been a lawyer...if only i wasn't so overly concerned about my reputation... ;) ) |

Location: Boise, Idaho | My wife will be disappointed that I invited you here instead of inviting us there. The pool isn't open yet, but it's going to be in the 80s this weekend. If you can cure my slice, you could be my caddy, too.
Somehow we haven't missed the sound of children laughing. The quiet after having teenagers in the house for so many years is kind of nice. |

Location: big island | you're spoiled, mark. you wouldn't want to stay at our place even if there was enuf room. like i previously mentioned, we gave up a whole lot of comfort and "comfortable things" lifestyle by me staying home to nurture our new little ones.
however, you are always welcome to big island. i welcome the chance for my wife and i to spend some time out and about with you and yours. we'll leave all four kids home!
if we combined my hook with your slice we could both be golfically cured. :D |

The new Bad Brains album just came out, and it's great, for all you reggae-punk fans. |
