Location: CA | I am relatively new here but a frequent visitor as this is a very enjoyable site. I have a couple of what might be construed as 'newbie' questions, but as one of my professors used to say, "If there are no questions, there are no answers."
* Why are SMT Adamas generally considered in a less scintillating light than the other Adamas?
* Can you update the pickups on Ovations. Say if I had an old '80s Legend or something with an OP24+, could you have the mothership upgrade to a newer pre-amp with the built in tuner?
BTW, I did try the search feature for these subjects, but couldn't find the answers. |

the op-24 can be upgraded to an optima preamp with built in tuner. $280 + shipping from the factory. there are a few of the optimas left according to kim keller, the contact man there. |

Personally I like the look of the textured top and I've been told they sound better. |

Location: Orange County, California | SMT = Good. A little thicker top. Looks like wood supposed to sound a little more like wood
CVT = Better. Looks like race car parts. Sounds like an Adamas, only shinier...
UNI/Textured top = Best. 1/3 the thickness of a wood top. Looks great burst finishes. Sounds better than anything else on the planet :D
If I were going to upgrade the preamp an SMT, I'd go straight to the OP-Pro Studio. |

Depending on who made the boots, you may have made a great deal, Bill. I saw a pair of boots the other day that would need an EF75S as barter bait. |

I came close to buying a CVT a few years back but with side by side comparison with an SMT changed my mind.
I like every Adamas I've ever played and my personal preference is:
1 - Textured top
2 - SMT
3 - CVT
The upgrade you're asking about I had done to both an Angel Step Walnut Elite and later to an Adamas II. |

Location: South of most, North of few | They also have an OP 24+C that comes with a tuner and probably a lot cheaper than an Optima. Also, the Optima may require a slightly larger hole,(not completely sure about that) but the 24+C would fit right in. If your's is a single knob OP24 and you want to get rid of it, let me know. I would be interested. |

I'll try to look for it later this week. |
