I have found some interesting info re headstock design, but can not yet access the general forum.
Willi Wilkanowski used this design on the few (30)guitars he made around 1940. He was a violimaker, and his guitars reflect that fact loud and clear.
You can find pictures of his creations in "Accustic Guitar, The Illustrated Encyclopedia".
I would say someone at Ovation, back in the day, saw the beauty in what this dude was doing. There is no mistaking his headstocks....

Yes, Willi has a headstock that looks kinda Ovationesque...


But he used many others also...


Whereas Ovation uses this headstock on most of it's offerings.
But it is possible that Willi was the inspiration.
He shoulda copy-written it. :p
