Location: south east Michigan | My son Dustin is going to be featured on a segment of MTV's Scarred. A film crew is coming to my house Thursday to film the interview portion. I know... not the program you'd like to be featured on.
A while ago now Dustin was "grinding" a handrail. The rail broke of of it's supports. The hook shaped bracket impaled his calf and twisted as he fell. Not good. He was lucky (?) it happened while skateing outside the U of M football stadium. He was taken right to the U of M hospital and had a team the best doctors available taking care of him.
Dustin was being filmed for a video a the time so there is record of the accident. To this day, I have not looked at it. He also asked for and got photos that the hospital took of the procedure.
He can still enjoy his rollerblades but just not at the level he did before.

Is MTV now related to Rolling Stone?
They started out as music and now are most things but? |

As for MTV, I'm grateful for VH-1. (The rant: Spare me the slick attempts to control the minds of a couple of generations now....)
That wouldn't be my main reason for hoping he'd appear on another program. Would that this story had never happened. Two kids in the Omaha area have died over the last couple of years from skating accidents. At least your son is wearing a helmet.
Thus endeth the rant. |

most of the kids on their are just plain stupid arrogant and DUMB
hopefully they will not portray your son in that light. |

Now... there is a chance that I'll be asked a question or two. When the hospital call to tell me that Dustin had "cut his leg", I told them... "Okay.. spit on it, stitch it up and send him home." Dustin told the MTV guy that and he said they might want to cover that angle.
I think I'll wear my white Ovation polo shirt.
For all the good it will do. |

Oh, and if MTV screws him around, tell him to digitize the video and pictures of his impalement and throw them on youtube for everyone to see gratis. No advertisers making money, draws eyeballs away from the TeeVee. Heck, tell him to do that anyway. :D |

They started out as music and now are most things but? I vaguely recall reading RS in the 80s, but I definitely remember the early days of MTV. Thinking back on how it started out and looking at how it's ended up I wonder how they managed to screw up such a simple formula. If the same management were running "High Times" it would be nothing but a 'lifestlye brand vehicle' for ZigZag. Errrr, wait... |

Brad, forget the OFC shirt and go right for the coconut top and grass skirt. Maybe you can get your own show, or at least a spot on Real World! |

no offense but the more I think about this stuff the more it just makes my blood boil.
sure grinding a handrail. was the handrail meant for the added stress of skates skateboard bike etc?
was it on a public building? or a private building? did your son have to pay for it to be replaced? IMHO he should have if he did not.
the amount of damage done to parks recreational areas, public buildings etc that is done is staggering. and my tax dollars usually pay for it.
I can show you the concrete in front of my house that is damaged by skatebaorders pounding on it and guess what? will their parents have to replace it if I ever decide to move and the borough tells me the concrete has divots? nope I will have to absorb that cost. why weren't the little bastards grinding on their own pavement? cause their own parents don't want them there.
sure we have a skate park here and it rarely gets used. the town next to us put one up but the liability insurance was so great they had to take it down especially when to use it you had to go to the po-lice station and get the key....yup the fence was knocked down in about 2 weeks LOL.
pet peeve sorry did not mean to rant ... |

Your reminding me of the neighborhood old folks that had the best bent grass lawn (putting green )and a beautiful perfectly trimed hedge that was the the talk of the neighborhood, and when me and a couple of freinds would come by we would go out of our way to get them on their porch and watch us run across their lawn and fall into their hedges and tear them up.
I now feel like an asshole about ever doing something as malicious as that to someone. So when someone knocks my mailbox down with a baseball bat or someone lawn jobs me or whatever else,Moma goes nuts about it and I just kick back and tell her don't worry its nothing to get upset about,CHILL OUT.
That is my confession and I feel alot better now after telling someone about this after all of these years.
IM SORRY MR.&MRS. ESLER FOR THE DAMAGE I DID TO YOUR LAWN & HEDGES.GWB. |

Al,
Your statement pushed some old buttons for me. I re-read it a couple times and I see, and for the most part agree with your point. I have taken this situation to the extreme and I sure can't expect other parents to take up the cause as I did.
The next paragraphs will contain a lot if "I did this and I did thats". I'm not trying to toot my own horn but trying to illustrate what it took to make a change.
IMO... The "system", be it local government or schools, has virtually abandoned kids ages 11 to 18. Before I go on, I know that the final responsibility rests with the parents and some people are better at parenting than others. However... outside of school sports, which is mostly only football, there is nothing for these kids to do!! NO dances... NO field trips... NO safe place to socialize.. they are left to hang around outside the Sears store at the mall. My community organizations will raise funds and put up yet another playground designed for kids under 7 and give themselves endless pats on the be-hind, telling themselves how much of a difference they are making. Then they’ll sit in their public meetings, hear complaints from business and folks like Al about those "damn kids". And then stick their heads up their.... ahem.. heads in the sand because no-one wants to tackle that one. They'll just send a patrol car by more often to chase them "damn kids" off.
I have raised 3 boys. They are aged two years apart. They were not attracted to school sports but they found a passion in roller-blades. I built small ramps & rails for the drive way. I made them wear safety gear. When a quality skatepark opened up 35 miles away I took them there at least twice a week. When the time came I took them to a skate-camp in Pennsylvania... multiple times. When the time came I took them to competitions in Indiana and Toronto. When they qualified for the National Competitions I took them to Dallas one year and L.A. the next.
But the real challenge came when the local “Downriver Recreation Commission”, a joint effort by a township, a city, and the school district proposed funding a free public skatepark. My kids & I went to that meeting and we jumped in with both feet. Our little group of about 30 of “those damn kids” held a car wash… collected bottles… sold flowers(?), and designed a project logo and sold t-shirts. They did some community service work. When given the chance a few of these “damn kids” got up in front of a sneering city council to plead their case. These kids were part of process. They made and kept promises. They compromised. They stood up for themselves. They played the political game. They made the difference. These kids raised $10,000.
Based on their efforts, these kids were the first group to receive a matching $10,000 grant from the newly formed Tony Hawk Foundation.
The city fathers were stunned. They never expected us to keep our promise. All of a sudden the skate park was a good idea. All of a sudden the people who were getting in our way two months before were claiming credit for the accomplishments. Only after the Tony Hawk grant did the county decide to kick in matching funds.
Now, Algonac has a skatepark. You can drive the circuit around town and see the five “playgrounds” empty but see a dozen or so kids at the park.
Yes… my son was street-skating when he got hurt. Yes, the rail might not have broken if he had not had that much weight on it. Perhaps the U of M fix-it department could have spent the time fixing a dripping sink instead. Or perhaps that precious tax dollar could be directed at the root cause. Maybe provide a place for kids to get together and play guitars. But that would mean that someone might have to take the next step beyond just saying… "HEY YOU DAMN KIDS!!" .

the only opinion I need to have is on gear because
"I am just an idiot that sells gear for a living"
any referece to past lives should be ignored. |

The guy said Dustin was a great interview. He told his story well and with enthusiasiam which, according to him, seldom happens. They left with over an hour of tape that will be edited down to 10 minutes It should be on the tube in about 6 to 8 weeks.
While this is an off topic thread....
Here I am at the Holiday Inn Express in Logan, Ohio. The Hocking Hills State Park area. This area is a real hidden treasure. Fantastic & scenic hiking trails.
We hiked down to a natural cave / ampitheater looking formation. We marveled at how the voices were projected and we could hear folks talk many yards away. Then Pam suggested that it would be cool to take the UTE down there and see how it sounded. She also point out place for some good calendar pics. I think she needs to give it a rest for a while.
We did the Amish thing a few days ago & will be home in a couple more days.
Lastly... I'm bummed. We got weathered out of our hot air balloon ride. Oh well... it'll give us something to do next time.
Later. |
