Location: Snåsa, Norway | I've got a DeArmond solidbody with singlecoils and a Fender Sidekick practice amp which does not sound very good anymore (if it ever has), and produces an increasing amount of hum and buzz in addition to the guitar tone. Any good suggestion for a reasonably cheap amp for livingroom playing of mostly jazzy an bluesy kind of stuff? :) |

I think that any of the little Vox amps are nice for the price. I love my DA5. |

Location: 6 String Ranch | I bought a little Fender for 600 and it was great. Pro-champ or something like that. About a foot square and 15 watts.
Go give a listen at some stores and get what sounds good to you. At that price range you never know what will pop up. |

Location: Scotland | $350 for a Velocette? That is the bargain of a lifetime, they go for around twice that over here, and they were made here! Gibson also put these out as "Goldtone" when they owned the TA name, not sure where the Gibson models were made. |

Trace Elliot
Here's a "MINT" one on the bay with a BIN of $425. Probably a good grab in that condition. |

I've never tried the TA's...are they that good? |

I've got two Big Stars sitting here in the room with me, cool looking amps, like a twin but that nice blue panel in front. I bought them from Davis Turner. |

Location: Carle Place, NY | Hi Erik:
I don't know what's available in Norway, but for $149 US the Epiphone Valve Junior is very hard to beat. Fender has re-issued the Champ 600 for $199 US which might be a good choice too. Both amps would be good for home use and are very cheap for brand new valve/tube amps. The Epi uses an EL84 tube and is better for distortion, but it needs to be cranked up unless you use a pedal. The Fender uses a 6V6 tube and is better for clean.
Here's the links:

15W Fender G-Dec, which some may snivel at, but which I find very cool.
One of the Pignoses.
And something like a Fender Blues, Jr, but not exactly. I forget what it's called.
Also, I've had good luck with Peavey and Yamaha Combos, so look into them.
My favorite is a Yamaha JX-30 which they discontinued years ago, but for a solid state they're great. |

Location: Snåsa, Norway | Thanks for the response, I got some useful advice. I've actually saved an Ebay search for "trace elliot velocette", but also the Epi Valve jr. and Fender Champ 600 looks interesting. The Digitech multi-fx I have more than covers my need to play with amp modelling and effects, so I just really want an amp that gives good clean tone with singlecoils and without the noise from my old Sidekick. |

Location: Eugene, Oregon | Solid-state amps are not too fashionable these days, but I love the soulful jazzy sound of the Polytone Mini-Brute amp. They are very rugged and reasonably portable, too. If you find a clean used one for $200-300 you should check it out--as with everything YMMV...
Another cool solid state amp is the downsized Roland Jazz Chorus-77. Fairly compact with two 10's (much smaller than the regular JC-120 which is about the size of a Fender Twin--ouch).
A cool sleeper of a combo tube amp is the Red Bear Cub that was distributed by Gibson in the mid-1990's. The chassis was made in Russia and is all point-to-point wired. It uses weird Russia tubes, but can be easily modded to take conventional ones. The US-made cabinet is butt-ugly and the amp guts are probably pretty cheesy, but it has a Celestion 12" and a distinctive thick tone. These routinely sell for $200-300.
Hope that helps! |
