Location: Phoenix AZ | Well, tomorrow is going to be a VERY special day in the Witko household. Honestly, I never thought this would actually happen. The anticipation is killing me.
Unlike most purchase decisions that I make independently, this one was just too big and too complex. The wife and I discussed it at length and weighed the pros and cons. She's in full agreement with it. It's certainly not a "must have", but it ranks right up there in the "want to have" catagory. I mean, when you get the opportunity, how the hell can you say no?
The photo isn't actually of mine, but it's a good represntation. I'll take actual photos and give a full report after I get to play with it a little. Sorry to boast, but I'm really excited that this finally happened.

What breed is it, Tuppy? Male, female? Have you picked out a name, yet? (Now, I probably wouldn't spend a pile of dough to fly to see all those guitars I've heard about, but the puppy, why, that's an entirely different story.) ;)
I don't have any pets, but I could be tempted by one like that.....

A great german humorist once said:
"Life without a dog is possible, but senseless."
I always had dogs, until my last dog died one and a half year ago because of cancer. Since then I am still in my year of mourning.
I am sure you'll love him/her. It is great to have someone at home who always loves you - and does not care if you are angry, had a bad day at work - or buying too many guitars.
Enjoy the love a dog will give you. Always!

We'll grind his bones to make our bread.

Congrats Dave & Mrs. Tupp. Yorkies are some of the best small breeds out there. Kristen would love to have one, but alas, we are owned by Eclectus Parrots. |

I'm not sure my wife is strong enough to walk away and leave one last brother behind whimpering all alone. Oh yeah, and I just got a call from our receiving dock at work that there's a guitar sized box just showed up for me. The family continues to grow in more ways than one ...

They'd run out to the invisible fence every time someone came by. Then one would hit the fence and think the other bit it and then they'd attack each other. Now that one died, the yipping is down about 75%. Someone told me they were supposed to be intelligent dogs, but I never saw any evidence of that. |

Location: SoCal | When the first Harry Potter novel came out I read it to see what my kids were reading. Shortly after that I got an email from my folks that they passed along, written by somebody warning of the evil satanic nature of the book. I sent an email back to everybody on the mailing list suggesting they read the book before condemning it. It was about friendship, loyalty, trust, honesty, good and evil, written in a package that would appeal to kids. If they wanted to condemn Harry Potter then they should condemn much of Shakespear's work and for that matter a good deal of the great literature of the 19th and 20th centuries.
The only danger is not in kids reading stuff like this, but in kids reading it without parents being involved in their lives. But then that danger could be there with almost anything kids read....
Ok. I'm stepping off my soapbox now and getting some breakfast......

Saw the movie last night, have read all but the last book. Movie wasn't all that great, but entertaining. Skipped too much of the book.
Roll models:
Hermione: Studies hard and works for what she wants. Doesn't accept stereotypes, perseveres
Harry: Against great odds, stays true to himself, values his friends, loyal to mentoring father figure.
Dumbledore: A man of great knowledge and power who expouses that all is not as it may seem , so don't rush to judgment, be patient, keep your eye on your goals and you'll be successful.
All good models and messages for young people.
Mike, we've met, I think I understand where you are coming from here, but this is just a story of the battle between good and evil and the trials that the characters go through to get there. Same plot as Homer, CS Lewis' Narnia series, and the Hobbit. Nowhere do I see any worship of the occult, in fact the Christmas celebration is prominent within each book.
If what I have written has offended you any any way, I do apologize, that is not my intent and I am looking forward to our next meeting and opportunity to make some music.

If this is harry pottier stuff I have no clue about any of that, never seen it or read it. Seems kids go gaga over it just I go gaga over a nice guitar.
I probably have no right to say this, since I never read the stuff, but I would be far less worried about the effects that reading a book might have over a childs development than I would over the actions of some of these childrens own parents. There is no quicker way to ensure a childs future behaviors than to demonstrate them personally.

I am a minister of the gospel of Christ of which I am not ashamed. I want to say that Harry Potter poses no threat to me and neither does Satan. I do not give Satan power over my life, because of Christ Satan is rendered powerless. End of story. Be involved with your kids and they will be what YOU want them to be and will surprise you by exceeding your expectations.
I am a father to a freshly minted 16 yo daughter who pulls straight A's in Honors and AP courses, reads constantly, (started with the first Harry Potter at 6), is on the Varsity tennis and soccer teams, and would rather play board games and cards with her mother and I instead of going out on her 16th birthday. She signed up for an extra course over her lunch period so she wouldn't waste the time at school.
Also father to a near 18 yo son who also reads constantly, mostly non-fiction historical material and anything he can find on submarines, bought the next Harry Potter with his own money, but has passed it to his sister for the first read. He plays HS soccer and is on the swim team. He pulls mostly A's but has 'teenage boy disease' and if it isn't interesting to him, it only gets enough effort to get the B. Math and science are all A's and he ranked in the 97th percentile in his college ACT test.
Ok, I'm done bragging. Boy it felt good. I'm pretty proud of them!
