Given that we can all then give our best uneducated opinion.
The legend can go both plugged and unplugged with good authority, The Viper, it's a plugged in only kind of guy, more like an electric with an acoustic side. |

Location: Keepin' It Weird in Portland, OR | Yeah, Ovations are spendy over there.
I saw a 1621 on eBarf over there, Like this one sell for $1600. Only not is such good condition.
One of the European brothers said that that was normal over yonder.
I had posted it here, saying that the seller was dreaming.
Apparently not...
BTW- Wouldn't that be Guitar Geeks?
Anyway... We Are O'Cultists! |

Location: SoCal | Hi Andrea,
Both guitars have the same scale length and nutwidth.
The Custom Legend is an acoustic guitar that can be plugged-in.
The EA68 is a guitar that is meant to be plug-in.
The body is chambered mahogany and only about 2 inches thick. Unplugged, it sounds like a very quiet acoustic. Leaving the house with an EA68 in one hand, 9 times out of 10, I'd have an amp in the other. You can also have a lot of fun with an EA68 into an overdriven tube amp. One that I bought on eBay came setup with flatwound jazz strings, it is fun to play with.
If you see yourself practicing and working out finger picking skills, the EA68 plugged into a Korg Pandora with earphones would be great. Due to its smaller body, I find the EA68 very comfortable.
But if you plan on playing acoustically with your friends, you will appreciate the Custom Legend.
As far as holding value, I do not see these two guitars as being investments. These are a pay-to-play commodity. I have no idea what those guitars have been going for in your market.
Unless you need it to live, slow down and do your homework.
Keep track of sales prices on comparable instruments.
Try to pay at the low end of the range that you've seen for the particular item.
Be comfortable with the acquisition knowing that you actively tried not to overpay. |

The reason why I said Legend is that it is acoustic.
I can make an acoustic do a few electric sounding things in Overdrive, but I cannot get an electric to sound acoustic. (which is why I bought my first O)
With effects and talent, others may be different. ymmv
In financial terms, due to where you live... If they are both the same price, you could buy whichever one is least common in your area. Cuz if you chose to, you could get the other one later.
disclaimer-- I have never played an EA68 |

Location: Boise, Idaho | Noah's advice is very sound. I also play mostly fingerstyle and although I have a couple of amps and a couple of electric guitars, I rarely plug them in. Although I like the sound of Ovations when amplified, I don't have the need to have anyone else listen to me. I assume you will be playing for your own enjoyment, in which case the Custom Legend would be the most satisfying. But if your own enjoyment includes playing for larger groups, then you may need to plug in. The CL does both. If you will get the most enjoyment by playing an amplified guitar, the Viper might be the most enjoyable.
The gender bias of this group dictates that most of us don't have premenstrual urgings. What you are experiencing is called GAS, guitar acquisition syndrome. It is not gender related. I don't understand the guitar homo reference either, but there are some things better left unexplained. |

The funny thing is the system administrators at work don't even know what your looking at! Guitar porn is only limited by the boundaries of the internet. Hell yeah! Laissez les bon temp roulet! |

Location: Cicero, NY | The 1537 is a favorite of many here but it's not the only one that Ovation has made that are just truly great guitars and many of them are great for gigging. Touch base with Paul Templeman and find out where you can play a few different models in your neck of the woods. And don't feel shallow around these parts going for looks over practicality - many of the people you're talking to here are men. 'Nuff said...? |
