Location: Covington, KY | Hi, as my user name suggests, I just purchased my first Ovation. A brand new Legend 1717-4. Very cool. Do I have to buy a guitar amp to determine if the preamp works? Any other way of telling?

Location: Central Massachusetts | Hi New, welcome aboard! You don't say where you are.. you could take it into most any music shop and try it out on one of their amps.
There are also adapters you can buy to basically go straight from your guitar into your computer.

Location: Covington, KY | Hey, thanks for the welcome. Sorry I didn't post my location. I made my first post rather hurriedly 'cause the spouse had just entered the room. And well, another new guitar in the house is going to be a REALLY BIG SURPRISE to her. And I didn't want to surprise her too soon. I'm trying to be considerate of her feelings:>)
For the aforementioned "surprise" reason and because I just waited close to 7 weeks for it to get here, I'm not anxious to take it out of it's hiding pla...oops, I'm sure you know what I mean. The preamp instructions say the battery light will flash that the preamp is turned on when the 1/4" plug is inserted. Do you think it'd flash with just the plug? Or can I plug the new guitar into the home stereo?
Thanks again for your help. I'm just doing my best to postpone the inevitable confrontation. |

New to, check around the pawn shops in you area. You might find a cheap amp that would suit your needs temporarily.

Location: Boise, Idaho | The light should come on when you plug the cable in, whether or not it's hooked to an amp. I have played an electric guitar through the home stereo before, maybe that's how I blew out a speaker, but never an acoustic/electric.
Our guitar center had a little Peavey 15 watt practice amp used for $39. I expect you could find a similar deal. I kept an amp in the trunk of the car for awhile until I could sneak it in. I think it would have been better to just get busted once with a guitar and an amp than once for the guitar and once for the amp. |

Tried just the plug first: nothing, no flashing light or light at all. Then plugged guitar into stereo amp: no light, no sound, nothing. Replaced battery then tried again. Still nothing. Tuner works fine though. Hmmmm. While I may never use the preamp, I'd like it to work, but it won't be a deal breaker. Just would be nice to know it does work if needed.
As far as getting busted, this new guitar will be a very, very bad bust, lots of noise, but it'll be easy compared to what's going to happen when she spots the new motorcyle :( . What the heck: Life happens, and I'm living it :D . |

Location: Boise, Idaho | Might be a wire off at the 1/4 jack. You might have to take the strings off and look inside or wiggle it around and listen for something loose. |

Location: Central Massachusetts | Bottom line is even if you get a light, that doesn't mean the preamp works. At some point you're gonna have to sneak the guitar out to an amp or sneak an amp into the guitar. Good luck! |

Location: Covington, KY | After a quick trip to the local GC, a new Fender amp and new guitar cord have been smuggled into the house. The light flashes, the preamp and pickup work, and the my new Ovation sounds great on the amplifier. Happiness :) ! The plan worked. |
