Today turned out to be a day I've been dreading for a long time - at least a year or so - I was laid off from my job. :(   I'm in the telecom industry, which is a complete muckup on its best day. I've been with this company for over six years - I started out with a startup out of Canada, and we were acquired three years ago by this company. Hopefully, I'll get a decent severence package to tide us over until I find something new.

So if anyone knows of any Sales Engineer openings... I'm your man!

It could be worse, right? As long as I can keep the wife calm, I'll get through this in one piece.

Dude, that stinks.

I keep hearing that Bill Gates will be stepping down soon. It's sure to cause a chain of promotions for a bunch of people. If you end up moving up this way I'd be happy to stow your parts and pieces!

Hope it all come together Mike

well,

no boss, no deadline, no rush.

just a new day to enjoy, so grab a guitar and write a song.

good things will come when it is time for them to come.

enjoy it while it lasts, because if you want it, in no time you will be back in the rat race.

live the day.

oh, the blues life..................all we have is today....... ;)

Wow, I'm sorry to hear this news but the company that can't recognise a quality employee when they have one doesn't deserve to have you! Hang in there and we'll be keeping this and your family in our prayers my friend...Shine it on and move ahead; better days are coming...
Blessings...

Every time I complain to my wife about the insecurities of self employment, she reminds me that there's no such thing as job security even when you work for a large company. She's right.

But I always remember the words of my dad... "Job security is not having a job you can always count on, it's knowing that you can always find work."

He was right....

I have had the same job for almost 30 years now, but I can't say we were ever happier than when we had a few weeks off driving around the country in our 71 VW bus, while I was looking for a job. Enjoy your break and don't let it get to you.

Man, I know different people have different needs in life...but that sounds like opportunity calling to me.

My wife is finally taking the big plunge. After 30 years of bookkeeping and accounting she's going to train for 2 months to become a custom brassiere maker. (not brazier)

If there's something you've always wanted to do, this is the time to go find out...

Mike, as I'm sure you know, there is nothing "for sure" in this life. Just do your best to deal with it, appreciate the blessings you now have, and other doors will open. I'll be praying for you.

The same thing happened to me in 1990 after 27 years I was told I wasn't needed anymore. As I look back it was one the best things that happened to me. I haven't made the $$$ I was making then but found out, I didn't need it.

God never closes one door without opening another one.

Like the other guys have said. Grab a guitar write a song and laugh all the way to the bank.

Sorry to hear it, CL. I've got friends who have been affected by the BellSouth/AT&T mess.

I liked what Moody's dad said. And I have no doubt that you'll find another great opportunity.

Sorry to heart that, Mike, but you're already doing the right things - let everyone know that you're open for opportunities and seek out friends for some moral support to help keep the chin up. You've done both here. Better times straight ahead.

Is there room in the class for one more?? To paraphrase George Costanza "two cups in the front, two loops in the back....".

A sales engineer is someone who does twice the work and makes half the commissions.

Thanks for the kind thoughts. I will definitely take this opportunity to figure out what I want to be when I grow up. Is it too late to become an astronaut?

Moody - I've been in this industry for over 20 years now, and haven't felt secure for the last 15. I've been in companies that have gone bankrupt, been acquired, and simply shut down. Your Dad was spot on... knowing you can find work makes all the difference.

Sorry to hear it, CL. The major part of my job is somewhat specialized, and not in that great of demand in this part of the country, so this is in the back of my mind a lot.

As we say here, "ALL telecoms suck!".

...but it's hardly ever the sales engineers' fault.

Fill... I can only assume you were volunteering for the mannequin position.

No.
But then, I can't get the hallway of blood scene from "The Shining", and Tiny Tim's appearance on the "Tonight Show" out of my mind, either.

Keep your chin up CL. I lost my job in February this year and I didn't see it coming....and it REALLY SUCKS!! But there's always someone who is worse off.

When I wake up in the morning and I'm breathing I know deep down that everything is OK and there's a guitar somewhere just waiting for me to play it. After nearly eight months I should've improved a lot but I guess I haven't been as productive with my time as I might have been.

Be patient and something will come along. Good luck.

Here's an amusing little footnote to the story. They put the wrong name on my severance package! They didn't just misspell it - they put a completely different first name. Talk about a kick in the crotch!

First I'm thinking that maybe they made a mistake and it was someone else who got the axe and I should keep working. Then I thought of poor Milton Wadams from Office Space who continued working despite the lack of a paycheck.

Oh well!
