Location: Indiana | I guess I'm showing/feeling my age(54). For the last 20 some years there has been something missing in rock n' roll. Fun. IMHO, too many bands today are just too serious about being the fastest, loudest, or just the most talented. Back in the 60's and early 70's bands were fun to watch and listen to. Bands like the Beatles, Hermans Hermits, Freddie and the Dreamers, Three Dog Night and many more. I always like a little choreography, too. Artists like James Brown, Mitch Rider or any band where the musicians move together. I had been wondering if I would ever see a fun band again. Until July 26. I went to the first rock concert I had been to in 24 years (3 Dog Night). There were 3 bands. The middle one, unfortunately, was not overly impressive. The first band just had the crowd jumping like the old high school sock hops. From start to finish. The drummer played standing up the whole set. I had been told that the headliner always puts on a good show, so I went with high hopes/expectations. I had never seen them before. My expectation were vastly surpassed. They had the croud singing all night. They choreographed some of their show as if they were a syncronized dance team. With steps that the crowd recognized and responded to. They played almost all of their hits (there are a lot) all the way back to the early 70's. Maybe rock 'n roll can be fun, again.
Who were these bands. The opener was "The Stray Cats". The headliner....ZZ Top. If you get a chance to see them, do it. The Pretenders were the middle act.

I saw the BS Orchestra Christmas show and that was pretty rousing as well.
For fun, I would have to put Springsteen concerts at the top - at least the shows from the eighties. |

Depending on my mood I guess I'd pay to see any of them and probably be sleeping through the other two.
I also find it interesting what you say about rock over the past 20 years, because I think people seem to miss how profound "Video Killed The Radio Star" really was.
I'm also not sure I'd ever put the Beatles, Hermans Hermits, Freddie and the Dreamers, and Three Dog Night completely into the "Rock" category, although they each did have a few rock tunes. Must be an age thing. :) |

Location: Copenhagen Denmark | Yeah ,but Rock & Roll means to Rock and to Roll.......any music that makes ya feel like rockin`& Rollin`could be Qualified as R & R...exept with somethin`like "Yesterday"..so True those lyrics can be however.. :)

Location: SoCal | Back in Eugene (in 1966-1967), there would suddenly appear "The Crickets are coming" spray painted on the sidewalks all over the city...they and the Turtles, Raider, Wailers, Kingsmen, etc., were the rock at the National Guard Armory in Eugene (Univ of Oregon) and Salem. We ignored Corvallis as that was home of the Cow College (Oregon State).
Was listening to an interview with a Chargers on KGB (FM 101.5) today...asked what his favorite rock (applies to other post) group was...said Beatles was his favorite "classic" rock group...good thing he runs and tackles well. |

Born in the USA tour, 1985...4+ hours of Absolute Dynamite! I've seen most of them and this is always near the top w/the exception of Fleetwood Mac in 1976 or Summer Jam at Feyline Fields in Phoenix in 1974: 10 bands including Aerosmith, REO Speedwagon, Johnny Winter and ZZ Top! California Jam in 1974 was also unreal! Lynyrd Skynyrd Rules: 1976...two months before the plane crash! Outstanding!

Now this is the cool part, I'm going with my 20 year old daughter (lives in NYC). She got the tickets as a fathers day gift for me and said "I got us up front field tickets to a band called The Police. If you've never heard of them I can give some mp3's."
Little does she know that she was conceived with The Police spinning on the Gerard.
