There is a (real musical)description for amusical piece that makes the cycle back into itself like the D/A/Bm/F#m/D/G/D/G/A does.

I think it's actually a ground bass, but Pachelbel didn't like the sound of "Pachelbels Ground Bass" so he called it a Canon. Go figure.

There's no question that Pachelbel's Canon in D is a great piece of music, but IMO, it's been overplayed. From weddings to birthdays (and even radio) ... it's been played too much that I can't even stand hearing it anymore.

Ditto...but really the entire set of wedding standards fits that. I think musicians get jaded. People go to weddings expecting to hear certain songs. Never mind the musician who is about to burst into flames with boredom.

Frankly, as much as I enjoy playing in church, most church music fits into that same category for me. It all sounds alike. Its hard to do anything interesting with it and not at the same time freak out the blue hairs out there.
