It's the go out-n-about guitar. The one I choose first when I want to travel with a guitar, play out with others or pass around... and I don't sweat it.
It's a terrific ambassador for Ovation Instruments. Never a soul who has heard or played it, has anything but good things to say about it's tone and playability. It hangs right along with the big ol' timey Dreadnoughts and sings as sweet as a bird tickled neath fingers.
There's just 'SoMuchRight' about this guitar. |

If it’s really nasty or camping, etc: 1966 Fender Villager 12...had it since new, original case is completely covered with stickers and memorabilia: it's been a way cool guitar!

My beater (I think I'm going to take a beating for this) is a Martin DX1 that I take to work everyday ... well almost always. Made in USA, I acquired it from a yard sale for cheap, including the gig bag. These days, they're still relatively inexpensive (about 500 bucks) at a big box retail store, but they're no longer made in the U.S. The label reads "Made in Mexico." |

Poor thing had drifted to the back of the Pile.
I refer to it as a Beater cuz it sounds great but looks like excrement.
But the ones that I play the most are 1621 and CC57
(now that I actually RAISED the action  ) |

Muzza has the same guitar....maybe they were only ever sold in Australia  ...you can see pics of it in my photo gallery if you're interested.
It's ideal for throwing around the backyard and bashing at parties. For a cheap guitar it doesn't have a bad tone to it (to my ears anyway) although it would be better with new strings. The ones on it have been there for about two years I think :) |

But if it comes to travelling, holidays or campfire - there is only one choice: the 94 Collector's. Good enough for acoustic sound (and that means really good. This guitar does not get the respect it deserves!) and easily replaced if stolen or damaged.
There are three guitars that I would easier shrink from no scarifice - my LX models (Custom Elite, white Legend and Koa) - but they just don't sound right.
So, my beater is the 94 Collector's.

My first choice for a guitar to grab-n-go right now would be the '97 collector's, for all the obvious reasons. Otherwise, if I'm going somewhere that I'm needing a serious strummer I grab the Taylor. Neither one's exactly a beater, though. |

guess, for all-around travel and performance...47RI, 1687RI, or the UTE. Hard to screw up an Adamas.
took a 2004 30th Anniv Custom Legend up to Las Vegas in July a couple of years ago - worried about it on the way up and back. Fortunately the 100 + heat didn't cause a problem. Wouldn't dare take the Martin. |

OCEAN ACOUSTIC
It's sort of an MOB w/o electronics. These OA's are starting to get a little bit of a cult following. They were only made for a year or two (in Korea) and only sold off shore. Pretty scarce in the US.
I was going to nominate my Academy as my beater, but it's far too nice.

I just can't bring myself to take my Ovation out of the house unless it's going directly to another controlled environment. From a sound perspective, the Eppy sounds like crap compaired to the 778 and I aim to keep it that way. I also have a Seagull 12 string that I sometimes take out. The Ovation is my pride and joy and I just couldn't take a chance of it being damaged by me, someone else or the environment. |

I know of no other guitar made on the planet which can take the changes in environment like an Ovation can...In 1988 I was in living in Charlottesville, VA and playing the UVA club circuit...I played gigs 7 nights a week and many days I was able to add gigs in the afternoon before a club date that night. In August of that year, I played a three hour Frat party outside in 102 degree temps w/85% humidity...I went straight to my club gig in air conditioning for 4 hours more...my Pacemaker 1615-4 not only preformed flawlessly, I did not even need to tune it when I go to the club...just on of many times my O's have been bullet proof for me!
I just love 'em!

They DO collect the dust, tho . . .
Probably the guitar that I care the LEAST about is an acoustic-only Pacemaker with a dodgy top that I bought for $75. It hangs on the living room wall and is the one goes to the beach/boat.
The Tak classical is the one next to my computer, is the one that I'll grab to practice/learn a song, and is the one that "travels" to safe destinations. It's small, light, and (in a padded gig bag) will fit easily into an overhead or an airliner closet. It travels well, and just sounds/plays SO nice.
I've also got an Ultra 1515-D 12-string, which is somewhere in NorthCarolina . . (I think). |

It was my Locker guitar as a Rigger in the Shipyard. About 4 years ago I sanded it down, repaired and repainted in laqcuer. Very basic model from "Sears" in 1967 but it is a regular pass-around guitar for a handfull of my coworkers on our lunch break. |

I don't really have a "beater", other than maybe my Pacemaker. It's got cracks & dings already & I got it for free after United Parcel Smashers got done with it. I used to use it for a travel guitar before I started playing with a thumb pick most of the time. Now I generally take my 1612 since it lends itself better to finger picking. It has two really small cracks in the top, one above & one below where the fingerboard goes over the top. Also a few minor dings. The case has a few scuff marks already so I don't worry about it much & it's easily replaced if something bad happens to it. |

I swear that the Blue Coral I used on the top protected the finish and didn't allow any burns or marks. I went out and bought a old Alvarez to use as a camp, beach, travel, and let kids mess with it, guitar. I've had it now for 20 years. It sits next to my computer table and is handy to pick up and play if the need or desire occurs. I have never treated it kindly, but there is not a single crack or mar on it .It has to be the best junk $50.00 guitar I've ever had. |

Wow, I had no idea...I had been seen this early in the auction...no one had bid and yet I suspected it would go for around $100 to $150...there were three things the wife asked me about that I was watching...she did not know how to bid so I told her to wait until the last minute of whatever auction she wanted to bid on and bid...I was with my brother in the eastern part of the state and was not home...I had not checked to see what she won...I had no idea you were bidding on this and she would not have known...yes, I do tend to bid at the last second...I've lost too many times...but I would have said something if I had known...I didn't suspect she had gotten this; she kept the secret well.; it was a surprise when Fed-Ex brought it on Friday...I just now checked the ended auction...Sorry, Brad...its my fault for telling her how to bid I guess...the other two items were guitars and she said they were too expensive... :o
