Does anyone know if Templeman's in Memphis this week??

I think he might've been spotted at Graceland last night:

I'm gonna get flamed for this for sure... but I just can't resist....

How is Elvis any different than any of the guys or gal "entertainers" that people whine so much about today for not having talent. Justine, Britney, Diddy etc... They all probably can sing, but none really all that well, just like Elvis (although he did have his moments). They all have a "Posse" just like Elvis. Heck even Hammer employed all his friends... just like Elvis. Most all crashed and burned (or are still in process of doing so) just as Elvis did. Yet Elvis is well "Elvis"

Elvis to me just seems like a charismatic entertainer. He didn't sing that well, didn't play that well, but knew a lot of people that could. He really couldn't act, but certainly did a few movies.

Sorry, just never got it. Was it that he was the first of that style entertainer? I would think Martin and Sinatra did it all better, but that was for a different generation.

Someone please educate me.

If you truly think he didn't sing that well you're never going to understand the answer.

I feel the same way about the Beatles - the magic always eluded me, and no matter how many billion fans try and persuade me otherwise they just will never mean very much to me.

I think putting "blessings" on every post is cheapening of what I assume is the intent, offensive to both people of faith and non-faith and just generally really annoying. But like you said.... the right to disagree.

I'm disturbed and quite frankly, a bit ashamed, like I wanna shower and its only August, that I agree with Schroeder on all counts.

If you don't think Elvis can sing.... What would you call it that John Lennon was doing? And much like Elvis, Paul McCartney never penned a song worth listening to, except, maybe Ebony and Ivory, but then, Michael, helped him with that....

I'll give George credit.... but John and Paul never did.

All a question of perspective.
My take is that those who do whatever it is that they do, FIRST, are the ones that stick better than those that follow. Now maybe they aren't absolute first, but they're the first to make it stick in a big way. Also the timing of when they make it stick with the public is a big factor.
I really don't get Elvis, the Beatles yes, Taylor no. (Sinatra yes, Hendrix yes, Kobain no, Led Zep no, and on and on)

I think the whole Elvis fervor (much like the Beatles') can be attributed to the TIME he(they) broke onto the scene - new, "different" from what was popular at the time. The difference being that the Beatles eventually evolved as songwriters, where as Presley was just a "singer" (and I'm not saying that disparagingly - because musically, that's pretty much all that I am . . .)

I just never found him t'be a GOOD singer.
He had a pretty limited range, he annunciated poorly, and I always found the overall timbre of his voice annoying.

Oddly enough, I can remember exactly where I was was when I'd heard that he died. I was refinishing the hardwood floors of my then-girlfriend's apartment in Wayne, NJ.

I remember it because either the night prior or after (I forget which) Groucho Marx also died.
(Where's all the "hooplah" celebrating Groucho's life??)
My response to the news about Elvis was "Wow. he died pretty young . . .".
When I heard about Groucho, I dropped the sander & cried while the radio played "Hello, I Must Be Going".

Groucho was better singer.

COUNT YOUR BLESSINGS
If we could shrink the earth's population to a village of precisely 100 people, with all of the existing human ratios remaining the same, the percentages would look like this:
• There would be 57 Asians, 21 Europeans, 14 from the Western Hemisphere-both north and south, and 8 Africans.
• Fifty-two (52) would be female; 48 would be male.
• Seventy (70) would be non-white; 30 would be white.
• Seventy (70) would be non-Christian; 30 would be Christian.
• Six people would possess 59 percent of the entire world's wealth, and all six would be from the United States.
• Eighty (80) would live in substandard housing; 70 would be unable to read; 50 would suffer from malnutrition; 1 would be near death; 1 would be near birth; 1, yes, only 1, would have a college education; and 1 would own a computer.
• When one considers our world from such a compressed perspective, the need for acceptance, understanding and education easily become apparent.
• And then, ponder the following: If you woke up this morning with more health than illness, you are more blessed than the million who will not survive this week.
• If you have never experienced the danger of battle, the loneliness of imprisonment, the agony of torture, or the pangs of starvation, you are ahead of 500 million people in the world.
• If you can attend a church service without fear of harassment, arrest, torture, or death, you are more blessed than three billion people in the world.
• If you have food in the refrigerator, clothes on your back, a roof overhead, and a place to sleep, you are richer than 75% of the people in this world.
• If you have money in the bank, in your wallet, and spare change in a dish someplace, you are among the top 8% of the world's wealthy.
• If you can read this message, you are more blessed than over two billion people in the world who cannot read at all.

With all the discontent, violence, hatred, sickness, terrorism, and disagreement and other generally un-happy events and situations in the world, I choose to invoke something good in whatever way that I can...no harm or annoyance intended...It's simply my choice to hopefully pass something good along to others in the form of a wish for good things to come their way. That it can't and won’t please everybody is a given; but if a few or even one gets something positive from it, then its worth it.

So, Blessings...

I have no idea what that answer was about. It almost completely defines the words non-sequiter.

Anyway, your "blessings" remind me every time you post of the two commanders in Catch 22 who vie with each other to make their aircrews pledge their allegiance the most number of times thus proving that they are the greatest patriot. I t gets to the point where they spend so long pledging that no missions get flown.

Are we to assume that should a visitor to your home remark on your fish that you reply "I caught it a while back, blessings"? Or do you ask "would you like a coffee, blessings"? Or "I'm sending my guitar in to be fixed, blessings?"

By the way is "blessings" a plural noun or some kind of implied passive verb? I never quite know how to take it.

There are people of great and active faith here, and you have no idea whether I am or not, some of whom are full time in ministry, one person who uses part of his vacation regularly to work in Africa and they all survive without putting badges all over their posts.

When Elvis came onto the scene I was not impressed, however, later I began to realize how talented he was. I ultimately liked him. Maybe my ears just got used to his sound. His greatest appeal was to the female audience. They were, and are, eternally devoted to him. Being an Adonis did not hurt his career. Niel Diamond had a similar effect on women. They LOVE him. I never thought Diamond was a great singer, but his writing and showmanship are first rate.

Schroeder, it’s not meant as a badge, it’s meant to be a separate succinct message...likewise, you have absolutely no knowledge of my journey either...other than trying to identify it with my message of "blessings"...I’m sorry it confounds you; there is no need to take it personally... I've no intent to offend or to even try and change your mind on this...

But, (since it obviously bothers you), have a great day...

Schroeder, MusicMisha.... Do I need to get the hose? 'nuff said

Back to Elvis and such...

I guess marketing is marketing even if it isn't planned. Some basic keys to success of anything are, be first, be focused, be a brand (branding etc), hype it to the max and believe it/live it.

I have to admit that Elvis is the benchmark for marketing, whether intentional or not. No matter if it was acting, singing, or eating a peanut butter and banana sandwich, he did it as "Elvis" and there is something to be said for that.

It does make a bit more sence now.

because, like Phil Ochs and so many others, they just don't have as broad an audience as they should (have).

For years the BBC was banned from playing his records, but he was allowed to appear on BBC tv if it was late at night.

I can't imagine why they would take an attitude like that.

Sleep, baby, sleep, in peace may you slumber,
No danger lurks, your sleep to encumber.
We've got the missiles, peace to determine,
And one of the fingers on the button will be German.

Why shouldn't they have nuclear warheads?
England says no, but they all are soreheads.
I say a bygone should be a bygone,
Let's make peace the way we did in Stanleyville and Saigon.

Once all the Germans were warlike and mean,
But that couldn't happen again.
We taught them a lesson in 1918
And they've hardly bothered us since then.

So, sleep well, my darling, the sandman can linger.
We know our buddies won't give us the finger.
Heil - hail - the Wehrmacht, I mean the Bundeswehr,
Hail to our loyal ally!

Will scare Brezhnev.*
I hope he is half as scared as I!

Haven't had the hose since I lived in LA and gave the finger to a cop.
I think you'd need to be in better shape Miles - it was a genuine question and answer session.

Well the song says'"The Devil Went Down To Georgia".

Last time I looked Tennessee was still north of Georgia.

But then geography was not one of my better subjects. :D

It seems to me that Elvis only recorded like 75 songs, but manages to have an excess of 150 albums released. They just seemed to mix and match the same songs and repackage it as something new, and that was before he passed away. I dunno. Is THAT the secret to good marketing???
