Just opened the second bottle of a Villa Sivestro Riserva Chianti Colli Senesi 2003.

You would kill several sentient beings to get a hold of this.
And I've got 22 bottles left and they're all gonna be gone before jW arrives next year.

Despite the PR that claims CA produces great wines, what do you guys drink for a treat? Virginia dessert wine is a given - I've never drunk anything I like better.

I'm a big fan of Argentinian Malbecs.

I have the same thought every time, after I drink a glass of wine..............."I could have had a V8"..........low sodium, of course. Now beer is another subject.

Yeah, yeah, I'm a Separatist/Nationalist....and
that's one of my simpler qualities. But The South Okanagan produces some fine wines, and some of my best clients. (I love doing contra with wineries.... ;) )

Though this area is producing many 'award winning' wines, one disturbing trend I see in the smaller vineyards is to 'un-oaked' wines. I think they're just trying to save on cask expenses...it'll never catch on, I hope.

Yes. Not national brands, but hundreds if not thousands of micro-breweries are turning out some VERY fine beers. and half of them seem to be in Portland.

That didn't hurt to much to type.....

I don't think apple wine and pear wine count.

Now, AUSTRALIAN wines, on the other hand.... :D

Good chianti is hard to find, and expensive. Like good valpolicella most of it never leaves Italy. They ain't stupid.

Have had some nice wines in my time. If money was no object, there a lots to choose from. But if I wanted to have something special and didn't want to kill the savings account, I go for Camus Vinyards in Calif. Not only because they make great grape juice, but also the owners are very cool folks! Hi Chuck and Chuck!!!

I love my red wines. I enjoy having a glass of it every now and then, especially on the dinner table or with some cheese and crackers.
I've tried several brands of chianti ... so far, I'm staying with Ruffino Riserva, unless someone has something else to recommend?
I also like Chilean wines, especially their merlot and cabernet.
Another brand that I enjoy is Toasted Head cabernet
Oh yeah, there are some good wines being produced locally in good ole Long Island. I'm partial to Pindar.
Just my .02 cents for the subject matter...

Mad Dog 20-20, Red Rocket, Night Train. I hear early August was a good vintage. If you'd like something lighter you can always go with Ripple.

No more Ripple huh? Bummer. I quit drinking quite a while back & I've been out of the loop. I didn't even notice it's demise. Too bad. I swilled my share of Boones Farm Apple when I was a kid too.

I remember once Fred Sanford telling Lamont he was going to make Harlem Champagne.
Lamont- "What's that Pop?"
Fred- "A bottle of Ripple mixed with a bottle of Sprite"

I don't know a lot about wines (mainly because the tendency towards alcoholism runs in our family and I didn't want to go there), but the few I have tried and actually liked have been very sweet. I could really enjoy expensive champagne, too, but I wouldn't buy it.
I'm with the Professor, though, in preferring something else--I'd much rather have a really good, strong, hot cup of tea anytime. (Laced with half and half and sugar.)

Then there was Gallo Spinata or however it was spelled.

There was always Thunderbird but that was nasty, not a premium vintage like Night Train.

Anybody remember Camelot Mead. I consumed mass quantities of it at Ball State in the 70's. I think it's produced in Bloomington, IN.

I'm kind of partial to a nice glass of Vintage Port at the end of a nice dinner. Something about the same age as me.

There are some really nice Pinot Noirs produced in my local area ... Monterey County is good for the grape (try Chalone Vineyards) but the Carneros region of Napa County really shines too.

A good chianti is first choice for reds, followed by cab-sauv.

My favorite vineyard would have to be here in the NW...Chateau St. Michelle, either Cab or Riesling. Amy and I have shared many a bottle...

Guess I have affinity to good fellowship at a particular winery...Chateau St. Michelle when I had the 4th Landing Support Bn. at Sand Point (Seattle), Sokol Blosser when I was with the 6th Engineer Support Bn in Portland. Even Blitz beer in Portland (from the old days at Univ. of Oregon. They always were more than hospitable to thirst Marines. And, I came back for cases.

I have had many a port and cigar at Mess Nights and Dining In's (with spouses). Often with our comrades from Canada - the Seaforth Highlanders. They would always bring the Regimental Piper. Nothing better than a drunk piper.

As to now, Metaxa (in rememberance of Callimachus of Athens and Alexander), Drambuie (in remberence of Malcom III Caennmoor and Charles) and , and cheap Brandy.
