Do you guys prefer the Elite-style multi-soundholes, or the Legend-style traditional soundhole? Why?

There are always exceptions, like the 1537, but I preffer the tradional single hole for a wood topped guitar.
As far as the Adamas line, I think there is a very good reason you don't see any meaningful number of tradional, single hole Adamii.

Why? Just based on my own personal experience, that's where I've seen the best performance.

Depends on the guitar.

Wooden top guitars I 100% perfer a center sound hole. They look better and sound better. I am definately not a fan of the elite model guitars. An exception was the 1537 which sounded quite nice, but still no match for a high quality center hole guitar.

Adamas fibre topped guitars I prefer the multi sound hole or cateye soundhole. The adamas smooth tops with the round center hole just look wrong to me and defeat the purpose of the adamas top and bracing. But I have never heard on in person. Maybe they sound OK, but I would tend to doubt it. Although I like the multi holes, I am no fan of the gay fig leave decorations. It's long since worn out its welcome and just looks silly if you ask me.

I prefer the multi-hole Elites.

I also prefer waffle-cones to Sugar-cones and French Toast over Pancakes.

It's all in the texture and flavor.

If the leaf designs on the Adamas looked tired before, the new flush eppeletts on the LX models makes them look even worse by comparison.

For looks, I'm neutral. I like the Elite or Adamas configuration for looks and for the center soundhole, like the old style rosette. Just personal preference.

For sound, for those listening, I'm not certain there's a whole lot of difference. For the person playing, the center soundhole configuration is better. You can hear more of what you're playing with a center soundhole. The Elite configuration really masks the sound to the player. I'm always amazed at how much sound comes out of my Adamii and Elite guitars when I hear somebody else playing them.

This doesn't mean you're thinking of giving up your "signature" models that you play out with, does it"?

I also like how my guitars sound when someone else plays them, but that's got nothing t'do with the guitars.....

Tupp,
I've also never heard a center-hole Adamas, it's still a mystery for me so I'm curious as to how they would sound, either the 6591 or the w-591...I imagine there's even a difference between those two..

I like the Elite multi sound-holes I like the looks and the sound.
As for the "gay fig leave decorations" since fig leaves were good enough for Adam and Eve they are good enough for me.

How Odd ,all this trashing of the multi-hole design,I bought my very first Ovation Elite 1537 because it was the most beautyful,Elegant guitar I had ever seen, like something that came from another planet, and those Leafs ,made of different woods, breathtaking, mine is a kind og prototype model(sunburst),there seem to be 26 of that batch, the bowl sticks out from the top a bit(as if the top was cut a little too small)so it has imperfections,it`s from 1983,now 23 yrs.later,I think it is still "out of this world",at times, I catch myself staring at it when perched on it`s stand,I do have other guitars, including a handmade guitar, made out of woods that is undescripable, real beautyful, when I find out how to post pictures I will, yet,my Elite has a special place in my heart,I bought it for it`s looks,I kept it for it`s Tone,It has a very "special" most distingtive sound, now, by comparison,I`m also the Proud owner of 2 Legend`s model 1617 (6 string sunburst) and model 1618 (12 string short scale natural)and they are truly fine instruments, and they can play rather loud, all are Deep Bowls, with the 1537 being the "Loudest" of them all, strung with Thomastik bronze gauge 13 - 57 ,strummed good,I have to tilt my head back,if not,it`s so loud,it hearts my eardrums, that`s how loud it can be,No joke this,it has a triple A grade spruce top (Engelmann spruce),and even though it seems that the new Elite`s have lesser wood quality tops ( I`m not sure of this )I can imagine, that when those tops have reached full potential, their sound will be like mine, tight controlled bass, strong "neutral" mid-range,fleeting highs ,so,..Once a Mandolin,a Banjo and my Elite played together, everyone eyed my instrument, and asked afterwards,.."What instrument is that"..I told them it was a guitar.." Ah really " ,it did n`t look like ,and certainly did not sound like one,it Beamed right through the Banjo and the Mandolin ,which is No Small Feat to accomplish ,the multi-hole design has certain Acoustic properties, that a center-hole design can not obtain,I will round of my ramblings,by saying, that the Elite is the most ,distingtive Looking and Sounding Ovation there is ,the guitar that sets Ovation worlds apart from other guitarmakers....Highly recommended !! :)

My choice is the 2080 closely followed by the little Oval hole when rimmed with tortise binding on a Koa top. After that I like the Thunderbolt.
Were there any other choices?

No real preference for center holes or epaulets on acoustics for appearance, and sound is very subjective and dependent upon too many variables. However, I do love archtops with F holes.

I've always been curious to play a 1537, but I heard they are quite heavy and they never made them in a midbowl, so what's a similar Elite in a mid-bowl cutaway?...

The deep bowl on the 1537 is essential to overall package. The same thing with a mid-bowl cut-away would be an entirely different animal.

speaking of the thunderbolt, when musicmishka read that i sold my 1581-7 to help finance a second automobile, he knew i no longer had a 6 stringer to gig with (i won't gig the EF75!). he emailed me with an extremely generous offer to send his snakeskin thunderbolt on an extended hawaiian vacation at his shipping expense. i was floored by his kindness and have accepted his offer. it is due here next week. i guess that means there will be a snake in hawaii after all. ;) mahalo nui loa, mike!!

by the way, back in about 1930, a small, blind snake that more resembles an earthworm, made it to hawaii from the phillipines in some potted plant soil. most local folks don't even know they exist here, but i have found several in the area around our church where i have been putting up fences and constructing a playground area. yesterday, i found the largest one i have seen yet. about 6 1/2" in length and the diameter of a .53 E string. they eat ants and termites, are very quick and definitely slither like a snake. crimson red in color.

Vic, Not sure if you were referring to my post or not, but please don't think I or anyone else is trashing some particular guitar design. The originator of those thread asked for opinions and I gave mine. I don't like elites and I've got my reasons. But that donesn't mean shit to anyone else or about anyone else's guitars. I am thrilled that you love your 1537 and are so passionate about it. I've owned two sunburst ones and they were wonderful guitars. Just not my coup of tea. As far as my own favorite guitars, many people laugh at them or think I'm stupid or deaf. So what. It's just my opinion and personal preference. Dave

Dave,I would never attack you, neither Professionally nor Personally, that is not my purpose of being here, besides ,your posts are humorous and very often to the point, and I wish I had met you while you still had them 1537`s,for that`s about the only guitar that I would like to have several of,especially since I`m considering a "refret",( it has been "crowned " once too often )tell you what : you can make it up to me,next time you come to Amsterdam, bring along a Martin, sell it to me reel tcheep, and I`ll buy you a cup of coffee, there are kids here,so I will not mention the good things in life.. :)

Steve,

I've got a beautiful 1537 that you are welcome to test drive should you ever get over towards Oak Ridge, TN. I may be in Johnson City later this fall with my daughters soccer team. I'll drop you a line when/if that happens.

Too bad you missed the Southern Jamboree. There were a bunch of great guitars present! (Some great people as well)

I can't imagine Gertrude with anything but a rosette, Jewel with anything but her epaulettes or Jazzey (the Tornado) with anything but F-holes. I feel sorry for Blanca (the Viper)--no decorations at all. People comment on how beautiful Jewel is--but they really notice how Gertrude sounds.
(Looks aside, what mostly blows people out of the water with the Ol' Lady and her little sister is how incredibly easy they are to play.)

Not sure what you mean, but yes as far as guitars I do swing both ways. Ovations and non-ovations, wood topped and graphite, innies and outies, etc.

Keep in mind, I only tell people what I think, not what THEY should think. Some folks prefer things that I do not. I like things that others dispise. It's all cool.

Do you guys prefer the Elite-style multi-soundholes, or the Legend-style traditional soundhole? Why?
YES, Because they both look and sound great.

And as far as the "outies" are concered, I prefer them to the inward-pointing epaulets, and I am the farthest thing from being gay. As a matter-of-fact, if I HAD to be gay, Id be a flaming lesbian.

Dave,
Guitars Dave, only guitars...Perhaps not the best play on words (thought about it after I had sent it in); Dave, we may have our differences and we're both opinionated, but you know I highly respect ya, my friend! You have one of the finest collections of instruments I have ever seen...someday I'd like to see them in person! When I saw that pic, I just couldn't resist!

We have differences? Oh yeah, god gave you the talent and me the looks. I'm cool with that ...

There's actually a very interesting story behind that 1587, and reminds me that you can't paint guitars with too broad a brush. Saying this model or that model is such and such has it's limitations. You really need to talk about individual specific guitars. Case in point, this 1587. It's a regular old Adamas I and should sound like all the rest. But it doesn't. For reasons I can not explain, this particular guitar just HONKS. I wish I knew what is was. It's just clearer, louder, more sustain, etc. than any others I have ever heard. This guitar has "it", whatever "it" is.

You are welcome to visit and play my guitars anytime, my friend.

Acoustically, my 2005 (centre hole, contour bowl) absolutely eats the 1768 elite (deep bowl) from the player's perspective. If you're listening to someone else play them, the elite's sound improves enormously, but I still prefer the 05's punchier sound.

I haven't enough plugged in experience with either to comment on that aspect. The one time I did play them through a PA, I was very happy with both.

Appearance wise. I'll always prefer the centre hole type with a cutaway. (just my opinion)

The elite is easier to play, but that's because I'm a tight-arse and too slack to pay someone to set the 05 up properly.

Lest you depart thinking there is any rational objective standard, Chatman says:

Acoustically, my 1768-C elite (deep bowl) absolutely eats the 2005 (centre hole, contour bowl) from the player's perspective.

Probably has more to with strings than anything. The Elite has some kind of coated strings that came with it (more than a year ago). These strings sound better to me than brand new strings on the 2005-ES. And I've had at least 4 or 5 string changes on the 2005 to compare over the course of the past year.

Chatman, your experience is exactly the opposite of what I would have predicted.

Which is why all of the is opinion and not fact.....

My 1867 Legend SSB can hold it's own sound wise...but I have to admit that I love the inlaid epu's on my 1778 LX....BUT the round hole CL 1158 12'er looks sooo good and sounds incredible....yet, the add on epu's of my U681T are very appealing, and the sound...no description for that!

Try em all...and fall in love, uh...lust...uh...love..well, hope you get the picture! ;)

Something like this?

Dave, I actually like the sound of the center-hole Adamas. It doesn't have the same resonance as the old tex-top Adamii, but sounds strikingly similar to a comarably set up Legend. It's a pretty nice sound setup overall.

Personally, I like the eppies with the 'gay' out-turned tails, but then again I also like the solid walnut ones on the 1680 most, right next to the solid maple or koa used on some of the recent collectors' models. First choice for wood top is always the custom legend center hole with the abalone rosette, particularly the new LX models.

For an Adamas, bass-side only solid color out-turned eppies, or bass holes with no leaves (Elite T style).

You've got to figure too, that Englemann top on the 2005 adds a lot of punch that a standard Sitka doesn't quite have. At least in my experience, either Adirondack or Englemann tops are awesomely powerful in how much sound they produce, regardless of the soundhole. That said, an Eng top with inlaid center soundhole...why don't I have one of these again?

Nice, is that redwood or maple (or something else) on the top?
