Location: Location Location Location | Hi,
This is my first post here. My name is Gary, and I had a question. I'm considering purchasing either a 2080 or a W597. Has anyone played both of these guitar, and could you tell me a basic difference between the two. Any characteristic sounds either might have. Thanks in advance. I've been a fan of this site for a while.

The newer model has the VIP preamp which is Ovation/Adamas top of the line preamp.
2080: 2080
2080 -2
The W597 is more traditional and the 2080 is cutting edge and very unique: both are nice; its a matter of personal preference!
Contact Al at Lost Art Vintage for a great deal and to learn more! (from the Links tab above)
Best wishes!

Location: Vermont USA | I have the W597 great guitar and I have played the 2080 on several occasions another great guitar if I had the opportunity to choose between the two the 2080 would be the one and it would be based on looks only. I feel the W597 can and does hold its own to the 2080. At least for me it does.

Location: big island | the w597 cobalt i used to own had the OP-50 preamp and was excellent plugged in. i have not played a finer one yet. acoustically, it sounded too thin for my preference, which is why i sold it. i have not had opportunity to play a 2080 which probably sounds about the same plugged in and beefier acoustically.
oh yeah...and WELCOME TO THE OFC, brooklyn! |

Yeah, that's the ticket! :D ;) :p |

Whoa...slow it down, Al. You don't want to overload the guy with details on his second day... |

The 2080 has more deeper rounder tone but still very dynamic.

I'd love one with just simple, EliteT soundholes . . . |

The only way to know of course, is to play one.
I own a MEWP-W597, and the sound is fantastic. I've played the regular W597, the 2080 and a 2080 baritone. They are also great. It's hard to describe sound, but all these guitars project like a cannon. I wouldn't say that the tone of the W597 is harpsichord like, as that indicates that it has a "smaller" sound with a rapid decay. Yes, it has clarity and neatness, like a harpsichord, but it is no measure small. I'd say it's more a matter of accent in that the 2080 accents the lower range, and the W597 accents the middle. So in the sense that a harpsichord is bright, then that assesment is correct. To my ear, the W597, or at least my MEWP, has that quintessential Adamas sound, if that's what you're looking for. |

BrianT had a W597 that I used to describe as "piano like". |

I did just buy Waskel's 2080 and I must say that it is one of the best sounding acoustic guitars that I have had the pleasure of playing.
I didn't originally like the cats' eye sound hole, when viewing the picture on the Adamas site. I must say that in person, it much better looking than the picture.
If you can play both, then that's the answer. If you can't , then the good news is that they are both great guitars.
Regards,
Tom |

Location: Bluffton, SC | I have played both and while I was really jazzing for a W597, it was lacking the real punch I thought I was going to hear. Great sound but not what I was thinking I was going to hear. The 2080, which I didn't think I was going to appreciate as much, blew me away. I was just looking for the wrong guitar. Al nailed it when he said two different animals. Find and play both if you can but it'll come down to what you're looking for - even if you don't know yet. |

Location: SE Michigan | I had a W597 that I sold, I now have a 1777 LX Legend. Both of these guitars are mid depth bowls. One thing I have learned is that mid depth bowls really get their butt kicked by deep and contour bowls when it comes to playing unplugged. That being said, they both are very nice plugged-in guitars and are not all that bad unplugged either. But when you get in a room full of deep bowls (like at the factory tours) you can really tell the difference.
When I can justify the expense my next Ovation will most likely be a 2080, unless they come out with something better or I snag a fabulous deal on an older model guitar.
Oh yeah, one other thing, there really is something to the textured top (2080) versus the smooth top (like on the W597). The texured top produces a more pleasing a wood-like tone to my ears anyway. |
