And aren't you gig guys always working on something new???
On my own I want to get back and finish The Who's, "Tattoo".
BrianT & I are working on three new ones.
Mrs. Robinson
Nowhere Man
And.... An obscure early British Invasion number that we want to keep under our hats until the next tour.
We took a run at "Mrs. Robinson" quite a while ago and decided we had better leave it alone. "Put it back in the stew pot to cook a while longer", so to speak. Now it seems like we might be able to make it presentable. |

I hope to hear it at the next tour or maybe on the next "members" disc. |

Location: Bluffton, SC | As for me, I recently saw a reunion concert dvd by Loggins & Messina and it just reminded me what solid players those guys were so I'm trying to play a couple of theirs (Pooh Corner, Angry Eyes, Vahevela). |

Location: Bluffton, SC | Ouch. I'll try not to take that personally, Brad. ;) As for me, it was one of the songs that I always sang to my daughter at bedtime when she was little so I've always wanted to actually be able to play it before she has kids of her own and she tells them that Grandpa's been working on that on for twenty some years and STILL can't play it! |

Location: Hicksville, NY | I'm currently learning to play two songs from both extremes (time line-wise). The first is a song that's been around long before I was born, and the second is one that my 14-year old plays constantly on her iPod. Anyway, here they are:
1) "This Guy's In Love With You" (Burt Bacharach / Herb Alpert) ... I think I pretty much got the song in its entirety. I just need to work on the kinks affiliated with my limited guitar playing.
2) "Collide" (Howie Day) ... sounds similar to Matchbox 20's/Rob Thomas' "Push" that I was able to generalize the chord patterns to this song. I think I got most of it, with the exception of the bridge part. I also need to memorize the lyrics, as opposed to just singing "la la la la" to it. :D |

Just got the Ryan Adams CD "Easy Tiger". There are a few candidates on it too. I like playing his song "Magnolia Mountain". |

Location: Tampa, FL | Recently had 2 great experiences performing solo at a fresh market and a church event. Kind of wet the whistle for more. My first attempt was mostly simple 60's fare (Sam Cooke, Lord Vader and the Penetrators, Buffalo Springfield, CSNY). My next attempt is this Saturday and I'm considering:
Never Been to Spain - TDN
Sailin' Shoes - Little Feat
WS Walcott Medicine Show - The Band
Mississippi Mud - Cavanaugh, Barris
Ain't Misbehavin' - Fats Waller
Since I'm very new to solo performing, I'm working pretty hard on developing my playlist. I find that I gravitate strongly to songs I grew up hearing, ergo the 60's slant. Since I'm hoping to perform with some regularity, I figure I need to pick up some contemporary stuff. Problem is I think most of it is not anything I'd care to learn. About the most contemporary stuff I'm practicing these days is some Five for Fighting (Superman and 100 years). |

It's nice to see such a variety of music being played. Seem like not everyone is stuck hip deep in classic rock. |

Location: SoCal | I've just started working out the guitar part for Michael Smith's The Dutchman.
Brad and Bill, I've played House at Pooh Corner (the extended version from the album Return To Pooh Corner) for years. My wife loves it and I played it for the kids at bedtime when they were younger. The only problem I have with it is I do it in C (Loggins does it in E), which is not bad, but the new part modulates up. Loggins goes to G and I go to Eb which is not a fun key to play things in w/o a capo. |

Performing solo is scary stuff. I expected it would be. Turned out to be immensely entertaining. At this point for me, it's all about song selection. Pick relatively easy, widely known, material and sound like your having fun. Pretty soon you will be. Right after finishing my set I called my brother (who is a music professional) and informed him that I had now entered the ranks of professional buskers (I got two tips).
I've played for a few years in church ensembles as well as some solo service music (typically guitar only, no vocals). I can state categorically that going solo is a totally different experience. And more than a little addictive. As for hanging bad chords out there or forgetting lyrics, if you maintain your rythm or perhaps more correctly your pace, the moment is gone as soon as it happens. Helps to finish strong and on key.
Rick's Rule to performing:
To the general public, you're only as good as your last song.
Chatman's corollary to Rick's Rule:
Your last song's only as good as the last line of the last verse. |

But, on mando, oooohhhh mmmmyyyy--I've started plinking with Jack's old group, and am struggling to learn what feels like a trillion fiddle tunes that pretty much all sound the same. I'm concentrating on one called "Fiddlin' Jack's Reel," which I wrote during his last illness. (When it was done, he wasn't well enough to play it, so I never got to hear it live :( .....) The band really likes it, though, and it will be part of the repertoire in the future. :D

A cover I was working on was "Dark Around the Moon", by Adrienne Young. Anyone heard her? |

Start with the intro solo to La Bamba, then rather than the La Bamba solo, shift to Twist and Shout, then end with the La Bamba solo used by Los Lobos.
I like doing this meshing of songs, with no rest in between.
Actually, as to performing solo, it's easier, then playing in a band. |
