I spent two hours today with an 80 year old luthier/ Bluegrass muscian of regional renown. His name is Vern Bryant and he was recommended to me as a good Resophonic guitar man.

Turns out, he was a regular with Bill Monroe and played with many of the NC/VA/TN bluegrass legends. He still gigs regularly (fiddle player).

He was also a Martin guitar repairman going way-way back as well builder of Guitars, fiddles and mandolins. And he a a truly remarkable 1938- D28 replica which he made that sounded like no other guitar I have ever heard. Really amazing.

After he finished with the rez, we sat and plucked a couple of tunes. I got to hear him play that stellar guitar and sing like a bird and as much as anything else...

I was absolutely captivated by the tangible connection with history I was experiencing.

I might well take a guitar building class from him this fall/winter. $1500.00 seems like peanuts to experience that more often AND walk away with a guitar I built...

Great day.

Sounds like a deal Jeff! That would be a very small investment for the experience and a new guitar to boot. Wish I could justify the time and effort to do that, but with a 9 year old, soccer takes president.

Unless you are looking for an internet scuffle, why would you bring this up on a guitar web site that discourages political discussion?

Just curious.

Hey, Hey, if anybody's gonna give Randy a bad time for making a political statement it's gonna be me. Anybody else giving him a bad time has to answer to me first.

And I'm too tired this afternoon......

Bad enough this board flaunts all kinds of unattainable guitars before me; now it's mandos, too. ;)
Glad you had a great day, Jeff; I wish I could get to hear the old gent make that beautiful mandolin sing. Do you know if there's any discs out there that he's on??

Very Nice Jeff! I went to college in the NC mountains and used to see Doc Watson and tha Boys play all of the time. It cemented my interest in Bluegrass. Nothing better than the 'Ol Timers!

History indeed....have fun at the class.

I don't know if he's on any recordings, if I find out that he is I will let you know.

Sign up for the class! NOW!
It will be a great experience.

Forget the thong, bikini, grass skirt and all that. Just wear the leather apron and run through the fields.....

Forget all the political BS until that bitch-on-a-broom from New Yawk gets elected. Then we'll all have to drive manure spreaders.

OK Miles, get the hoses out.

Did I mention that his class has a 'teacher-to-student' ratio of 1to1?

Meanwhile......back at the topic....

Do we, or do we not DEMAND that Jeff give us second-hand luthier lesson/reports when he goes to do this?
(is demand the right word? maybe there's an appropriate New Jersey innuendo word that works better....I don't speak the language)

Good, it'll give me time to finish the tipi, rock polishing, and cd shelf: clean up the workbench: and install a computer so I can follow along.
