I am left handed & started out playing right handed just to see if I actually liked guitar & by the time I decided I did I thought it would be harder to try to switch so have continued playing right handed all these years. |

Location: Copenhagen Denmark | I am right handed, yet both my sons are Lefthanded,I tried to play Lefthanded, and I found that very difficult(impossible),so, I thought it was best to let them "flow naturally",and got them Lefthand guitars,a steel-string acoustic Fender for the Eldest, and a Celebrity CC 047 for the youngest.. :)

Location: Keepin' It Weird in Portland, OR | When I was young, (and they packed me off to school) it seemed to me that it would be more logical to have my better hand (my right) doing the more complicated stuff on the fret-board...
Seemed Logical.... I was wrong!
I play right-handed, I just wanted to type that to see if anyone agreed.
[I've met a few lefties that play right-handed] |

Location: Southern California | I have thought that as well, but since I've never tried it the left handed way I don't know if it's true or not.......... |

Location: Carle Place, NY | Paul Simon and Steve Morse are both left-handed but play righty. My son is lefty but plays righty and I've never heard him complain.
Here's something to think about. Everyone who plays an orchestral string instrument plays righty. I don't think there's such a thing as a lefty violin, cello, etc.
That said, there' nothing wrong with playing lefty. I used to jam with a friend who played lefty and it was great because it's easier to follow. Kinda like playing into a mirror. |

Location: Atlanta GA | I am left handed and learned to play left handed. If I had it to do over, I would have given a sincere effort to learn to play right handed. If for no ther reason, the availability of guitars to play. It is very frustrating to listen to all of you discussing guitars the aren't available to me. Also when I go to a music store there will be hundreds of righties and a couple (on a good day) of very low end leftys leaning on th wall in a corner. The exception is a shop in Houston called South Paw Guitar which only deals in Left Handaded Guitars. It's like Christmas morning on the rare occasion I find myself traveling to Houston. |

Location: Central Florida | I write, eat and throw a ball right-handed, but I play guitar left-handed... dunno why. It's always felt more "natural" to me to play that way. I can't really explain it, though I do have a couple of working theories.
When I was just four years old and witnessed the Beatles on the Ed Sullivan Show, I was immediately drawn to Paul McCartney, I think because to a little kid he looked like he was the one having the most fun. To this day he's remained my favorite Beatle, so maybe psychologically that has something to do with my southpaw tendencies. The other theory I have: when I first started to take the guitar seriously in the late 60s, Glen Campbell was all over television. I learned most of what I know about chord shapes and picking/strumming from watching him faithfully (with my guitar in hand) during the run of his TV show. The Glen Campbell Goodtime Hour literally served as my weekly guitar lesson. By watching Glen and holding my guitar in the lefty-correct position, I was able to "mirror," or at least attempt to mirror, whatever he played. Perhaps that's why it became so natural for me to play that way.
If I had it to do over, I'd definitely force myself to learn to play righty. It's a bugger trying to find decent left-handed guitars. Plus, I've pretty much had to jump ship when it comes to Ovations because their LH offerings have become so limited. |
