Location: Illinois, U.S.A. | THAT looks a LOT like my newish, New-Yorker-parlor-sized Takamine EF417S, except the Tak doesn't have the pickguard.
There's a new Tak EF417S for sale on eBay I have on good authority will go for perhaps $1400, on a "best offer" basis. |

Location: Illinois, U.S.A. | It was too late to edit my last post, but I visited the Martin site. The offer a Model 00-42K Limited Production that has almost identical specs in terms of materials, size, and looks as my Takamine EF417S . The Martin lists for $8799, the recently discontinued Takamine listed for $2715 in it's heyday. (But who pays list price?) Only 60 copies of the Tak were ever made in their Japan facility. Even at street prices, there is a huge price difference going on here, and I can't imagine it has to do only with "quality control" or craftmanship or the warranty terms. |

The CEO-5 is nothing at all like the TAK-417. CEO-5 is full sized slope shoulder dreadnaught with 12 fret slothead neck. TAK is a different animal. Both nice guitars but as different as day and night.
The CEO-5 is the guitar that started my Martin journey. I went into a local shop and could not believe it when the doped out highschool kid behind the counter said "wanna see something cool?" I expected him to pull a baggie from his pocket. But guides me over to a used CEO-5. I could not believe my ears. It was the most amazing acoustic sound. I went home and slept on it and decided it would take the plunge and buy my first non-ovation in 35 years. Returneed the next day and it was gone.
I searched high and low and could not find another. But I stumbled on the D18-VS which is the same guitar with less bling and mahog b/s. I grabbed it and it was a wonderful guitar and at the time the best sounding instrument I owned. But I wanted more. If the D18VS was the best, then what would a micely broken in HD28-VS sound like? I was bitten and the HD became the new king of the mountain in my house.
These full sized dreads are absolute boomers. It's a big box. Definately not Parlor, or New Yorker size. If it was not for the HD, I would be on this like stink on a monkey. Price is very good. If someone wants to add something from the top shelf to their collects I can't think of a better one than this.
TAK New Yorker is a great instrument as well, but it's like comparing apples and baking soda.

Location: ms | I had a D18VS sunburst with is rare, sounded like a dream but had to much V in the neck for me. I tried a CEO` it sounded a little dead to me but it may have just needed to open up. |

Location: Copenhagen Denmark | Around here, many that I know , are selling their M`s and G`s,and have gone over to TAK`s ,with new Solid Tops that sound GOOD right away..?!..I wonder if they have discovered a technology too cure the wood,so as that, one does not need to wait like forever,in order to "play the game"..YAMAHA has build such a "curing" place,Big hall`s ,hundred`s of people working there..maybe TAKAMINE is buying wood from them.. :)
Vic
..YAIRI bought Ton`s of good wood in the sixtie`s,and benefits well from it now.. |

(snip, snip) I have heard of these "weird science"-like experiments where a maker took guitar top-wood and played music (or tones, at least) to it 24/7 to "season" it as if it were being played on an instrument. Dunno' how that turned out. Plus climate controlled warehousing of materials is common today, compared to decades ago. Mostly though, I think it is better craftsmanship, pride, and better quality control standards. |

Gulfcoast is correct. the D18-VS does have a very pronounced V shape neck. I didn't like it either. The HD28-VS is a much softer shape.

Location: Phoenix AZ | CEO-5 is a superb instrument. Glad to see this one coming into the family. I know that sounds odd, But I think as Jim explores what the CEO can do, he will better appreciate his ovation guitars for what they can do. The 1537 and CEO will make a great 1-2 punch. One for plugged in skinny neck stuff and the other for acoustic tone wideneck stuff. Great combo. Dave |
