Hi everybody,

I'm Pascal and new to this forum. I was wondering if someone might could help me.

I’ve recently purchased an Ovation magnum mark II bass through a third party. Unfortunately, it needed some repair, as there was a quite huge crack in the body next to the pickguard. A friend of mine, who is a cabinet maker, has already finished the woodwork, and the bass is again in quiet nice condition.

However, to do this, he had to grind of the paint down to the wood and now it needs partial repainting. I was wondering if someone could give me some information on which type of paint/varnish was normally used on these basses (maybe nitro paint, car paint)? We also have a problem in dyeing the colour. The bass is in dark/cherry red. Are there any official technical color codes that might help us with this issue? Any information on the topic would be helpful.

The bass also has a shielded cavity, but this work looks quiet “amateurish”. It neither seems to be properly executed nor necessary. Does anyone know if the magnum bass was shielded when leaving factory?

Kind regards,

Pascal
