Location: Indiana | My 2 cents... DW has shown signs of being serious about Ovation from the beginning. It was a bold move trying to hang on to the mothership. Off shore quality is as good as it's ever been, IMO. Not sure DW knew what was next regarding Ovation after xraiderman. Having someone like Rick consulting gives context, history and direction. Very exciting news to me.

This can be taken in one of two ways.

Location: Keepin' It Weird in Portland, OR | Offshore guitars are okay... But!
Long time ago I bought a 1778TX because I could not find a 1778T.
The Korean TX was pretty good.
But when I compared it to a USA 1778T, I promptly sold the TX.
I could continue with... I have a CSE44 Korean Celebrity.
It is a Great guitar, BUT...
When compared to a USA-made 6778LX (or any USO) the offshore guitar is found lacking.
I am sure that an Asian Ovation could be as good as an USA Ovation.
But the whole point of manufacturing in Asia is the make guitars cheaper.
I currently have a White 1778TX-6 made in Korea by DW since the takeover....
It is okay but.... It is NOT a "real" Ovation, it does not compare to my USA T's.
[disclaimer] I do own a Journey (china) and a BC Rich (china) and Traveler guitars (china).
I also own Seagull guitars that were made in Canada, but that is a whole 'nuther thing.

Own a DW mandolin. It's my opinion they are a cut above celeb's of the past. Coming up on 50 years as an O player... granted, still a novice. As I said above, my 2 cents. |

Location: Katmandu | I hate to be the negative Nancy here, but for me it's nothing to get excited about that the Asian contractors have finally figured out how to churn out a half-decent mass-produced Ovation given how much time they've had to learn to do so.
Rick Hall or not, I don't see Ovation ever coming back or rejuvenating its American roots reinventing itself in the process given how often they've tried already. |

honestly they play well, they look great but they are seriously lacking in tone and structure.
IMHO the best imports were the ones that Fender never had made because they decided to sell the company and cut ties with Ovation. The guitars from that namm show were really nice. and sounded pretty good.
my experience of 25 years as a dealer.....well... I guess it's not worth anything....like my opinion.
no I am not being negative for the sake of being negative I KNOW what kind of quality can be produced in Asia IF YOU PAY FOR IT!!!!!
sure it is still cheaper than USA but not at the price point we are all used to seeing imports at.
In fact... if you have noticed over the past few years imports are rising in price where I have a near mint USA elite T selling for UNDER what a new tx sells for.....

That would take a LOT of backtrack research.. and since I am not yet retired with ample time to fizz away on such endeavors, please don't tempt me further!
No.. wait.. make that "please, please, mister" don't temp me further.
Oh, and to add, I fully agree with Al on the last page about the price of Asian imports increasing to the point of overtaking nice pre-owned USA's that are still a better deal at that point of the sale chain. I think we all saw that coming.

Location: Phoenix AZ | This debate has been had on this forum many times, and the answer is not QUALITY based, it is PRICE based.
If price is not a consideration (or you just like to dream), you will choose the USA Ovation every single time. It is a better quality guitar ... PERIOD.
But many do not have that financial freedom so price IS a factor in the selection. So you need to simply focus on what is the best Ovation that I can buy for the amount of money I'm willing to spend. Don't get hung up on where it is made ... but at the same time don't expect it to rival a USA Ovation just because it looks kinda the same.
I always think of VW vs Porsche. Despite common ownership, They play to different markets just like Asian vs USA Ovations. |
