Hi all
I am a Bass player in Montreal with a collection of 15 basses and I finally got the Magnum 1 I've been looking for.
I'm hoping the collective wisdom can help me in dating this as the serial # is B3033 which doesn't seem to fall into the established range.

The best you can get from Ovation records is that production was 1974-79. Serial numbers on the basses are usually B plus 5 digits, but anomalies are not uncommon. With the rest of the Ovation solidbody range there were sublte variations in hardware etc that can help get close to year of manufacture, but the Magnum 1 & 2 were pretty much identical thoughout their entite production span, nothing really changed until they morphed into Magnums 3 and 4

Question:

The Mag2s/4s have 3 sliders on the eq that are actually 6 sliders "tied" into 3 pairs.

My question is : if the plastic "tabs" are removed would you have better control over the eq, or are the sliders DESIGNED to be moved in pairs? . . .

It looks like 6 sliders but it's actually only 3-band EQ. There are 6 tabs but they move in pairs regardless of whether the plastic caps are on or not.

Since when you had a Magnum?

Sorry, I didn't express myself very well there. Yes the 6 tags physically move independantly, but certainly on mine they don't seem to working independantly at 6 different frequencies. That said, the preamp on mine is in need of a damn good overhaul. I just checked to refresh my memory, and with the caps off it seems the left slider of each pair is cutting and boosting at a whatever frequency it is centred at. The right slider seems to affect volume only, but not frequency. But as I said, I need to get inside and give it a good talking to.

Thinking about it, maybe they used a standard 6 band EQ circuit, and modified it operate at three bands. Or maybe it is a 6-band EQ and with the caps on each pair are doing 2 bands simultaneously. Can't think why they would have done that though, unless they thought that an onboard 6 band graphic EQ was a little too radical, even for Ovation.

One part of the paired slider is the EQ section, the other part is to keep the volume even over the range of the EQ section.
I guess you could use them independently, but I don't see any advantage to that.

Okay, that makes sense as that's the effect they have when working independently.
Just curious, was all . . .

I acquired a Mag4 thru Beal.
It was used to prop open the basement door during the hot CT summers.

It quite an unusual shade of mahogany - has a bit of a "red/purpl-ish" tinge to it.
Kinda "Mauvais Mauve".

I have one of those too. I think that red stain just did things, like morphed, over time.
