| It was Mike (I think) that posted a few weeks back that he'd strung his 12 string completely in octaves. Just done it - amazing sound. If a standard strung ute is loud enough to flatten a Marshall stack, you ain't heard nothin' yet. It's like a harpsichord attached to a cathedral pipe organ. Well worth an experiment if you've got a 12.
BTW Mike - what's with this "sorry you lost" on Jerome's thread? They got their little blue asses kicked by a better team. ;) :D |

| I've been thinking about using the 1885 as my "alternate tuned" guitar, the old 1115 is getting most of the 12 action lately.. and sounds really good....
and I do have 2 sets of 12s on the shelf in front of me... plus it's time to re-string the 1613(broken A).. and there's a set of savarez ht on the shelf as well... so..
banzai... see ya in 36 strings.. gotta get a winder one of these days.

| I mean the top two pairs - changed to octaves. It makes a truly wierd and wonderful noise. Some things sound great, some like porridge.
It's what Sunday afternoons after an enormous Sunday lunch and a couple bottles of wine are for. Doing stupid things that don't require me to stand up. |

You're welcome. Unfortunately it wasn't me that posted. I still string my 12 string guitars the same old way. I do remember someone posting about stringing a 12 string differently. Maybe MusicMike. He has a few 12 strings and more experience than me.
BTW; What was the final score? Or is this a game where who ever has the most players still standing at the end wins? :D |

And like Paul asked, what gauges are you using?
Cuz I've had .009's go SPROING  ! on the G octave...
And I'm guessing a little more tension on the B & e.
But the concept sounds Awesome! |

| I use wussy 10-41 Thomastik low tension Plectrum series strings so the two lowest octave strings are 19 and 14 flatwound. I just dumped one each of the b and high e strings and put a wound 14 low A cranked up a tone to b and a wound low 19 exactly as it is on the bottom string.
I kept the same high/low order as the other strings so I now have the bizarre situation where string number 1 is identical to string number 12.
I think I might reverse the top two strings.
It produces a very warm sound strummed gently but sounds like a bomb going off if you dig in. Makes a great sound playing lead runs.
Like I said, it passed a Sunday afternoon..... |

Location: Scotland | Now I get it, you mean the bottom two pairs. When you said top two I was trying to figure out how you could get the first and second srings an octave higher. So the 5th and 6th pairs are now actually 2 octaves apart. Cool |

| NO.
The TOP two pairs are now the original top b and e with an octave LOWER string pairing. I used a BOTTOM octave string (ie the high bottom E) to be an octave lower than the top E string. Similarly with the higher of the A strings tuned up to B.
I never said it wasn't bizarre. But there again I read about it on the OFC so it would be.
I like the idea of the 2 octave bottom strings - I'll let you know. |
