First Year, Red Digit Bounty...

I sat in with a house party band last night playing a 1771LX. A guest at the party, a guy about 60, came up and we were briefly talking Ovations. He told me that many years back he heard that Ovation (or some other person(s)) were offering top dollar bounty to purchase any first-year Ovations they could find worldwide with red serial numbers, and wondered if I knew what ever became of that. It rang vaguely urban mythish to me, but I had no definitive knowledge or answer, nor did anyone else in the band. It piqued my curiosity though, so I am wondering if anyone here ever heard of such thing? If so, who was it?
