Did Ovation ever make a double neck solidbody?
I have never seen or heard reference to one.

Not as a production model. They made a custom double neck preacher for the guy in Boston. Maybe one or two others. They are rare. Dave

That was a total custom shop and not a production model as Dave said. Samova had two Double Deacon bodies made and assembled one of them.

I have aspirations to assemble a 6/12-hollow-body-Preacher-necked-acoustic-electric-ready for VXT internals Mutt.

I am just so thankful that Tupp flunked Woodshop and isn't grafting Uke/Martin/Tak parts together!

But then again...

Samova made one.
They really are the kind of thing you dream about and lust after, until you have one. Then it's "What was I thinking?!!??"

I always wanted a Gibson EDS-1275 and last year I bought a white one: killer looking guitar and the 12 string neck was TDF...but it was heavy and awkward to play and the 6 string neck had the usual Gibson problems: intonation and string breakage from sharp tuner edges...but is sure did look great! I traded it for the NAMM Adamas I. Never looked back.

See what I mean?

I always wanted one of the early hollow Gibson 6/12. Had a chance to buy a refinished one for 3K back i the early 90's. It was white and stripped and refined natural. I should have bought it and had Hamer redo the redo. But I didn't and just had them make me one from scratch.

The pursuit of a concept is un-arguably the best part.

So maybe I need to make two single necked guitars. You guys have me thinking anyway.

Good question.

Mike make me a doubleneck Bass/guitar in a deacon body shape..... It'll weight 15 lbs but I'll be the only guy who owns one.

So lets just start with a thru-neck Warmoth five string Bass and with a Deacon body shape. Add chambered innerds and room for the piezo and mag pickups...

there's an elderly guy here in hilo that will often perform at the local zoo for events (such as the white tiger's birthday!) and he plays one of the most interesting double necks i have ever seen. it is an older (mid 40's) gibson archtop 6 string with a gibson f-style mandolin "siamesed" into it. appears to be a professionally done job and he plays it well. i've always got a kid on my back so i haven't had opportunity to ask about it. i overheard him telling someone about the guitar's age.

I came very close to buying a white EDS-1275 a few years ago. Was looking at them for two years, bid on about a half dozen and was runner-up on half of those. I think Stephen still has a real interesting Ibanez model available. Then I got distracted with the OFC and Koala models, among others. A used Celeb double-neck is probably a good buy to try out.

I played it! Graziano is located out in CA. Actually just down the road from Aeroplane Marc, but I didn't know it at the time. Yup, this double neck weighs almost nothing. Only problem is that 1) waiting time is about 1.5 years and 2) price is $2600.

But is IS pretty cool ...

So how does the 8 string sound, Dave? Are the pairs all unison, or octave?

Nothing is "normal" in the world of ukuleles, but "normally" the lowest two courses (G and C) and octaves and the highest two courses (E and A) and unison. Actually the double neck that I played at Graziano was a 6/4 double, not a 8/4 double. Dave

What I think Dave MEANT to say was:

". . the lowest two courses (G and C) ARE octaves

and the highest two courses (E and A) ARE unison . ."

He tends t'find the English language a bit "tricky" . . .

Can't swing it. I was discussing a regular old tenor with him and even that was out of my reach. Of course he had one for sale was made from spruce and rosewood salvaged from an early 60's D28 whos neck somehow disappeared ... Very cool instrument, he used the sides as-is, just re-ironed them slowly into uke shape. The rosewood back be planed down to about 2/3 of it's original thickness and the spruce top he planed down to almost half. Used the original braces as stock to hand carve new uke sized braces. A lot of work went into it and it was an amazing instrument. But well over $3k ... gulp.

Professor, please don't ruin the experience by playing one of those lesser imports..."if" the factory tour goes down, I will have my deep bowl up there for you to sample ;)

Tim, you're preaching to the choir on this one, and I'd sure enjoy sampling yours. I remember when you received in while you were i Hawaii. Based on the responses, and my own experiences, my comment to Aussie was to stick a toe in the water and see if you like it before diving in head first, which more typically is my M.O.

It could be worse. There could be multiple pickups for each neck. Think of the endless possibilities if you toss in some VIP technology as well. Also, how about mixing up the body configurations? Without regard to the engineering issues, there could be a solid body on top, a bowl for the next three that progresses from super shallow to deep, then a wood box on the bottom? A mando and/or uke as well? Didn't some artist use a double-neck guitar/banjo combo years ago?

If I were in a position to order a doubleneck, mine would be like Jewel (s/s LX, -4 finish, bling trim) and the other neck would be nylon strings, with a 1 11/16 neck in slothead for small hands. Now that would be fun...... :)
As for the multiple-necked mutation above, well, you'd need to have one really good chiropractor on call after you're finished playing. (At least I would.)

Another interesting doubleneck.
A 2 x 4 string bass fretted and fretless if I'm right.
Custom built for Jonas Hellborg

I've had these pics from a Japanese fan.

How old are those pics?

he's been a Wechter endorsee for a long time now.

And I think you're right about the fretted/fretless.
He always reminds me of Vai and Satriani - technically awesome but as musical as watching paint dry. But what do I know? Nothing.

According the kind guy who sent me the pics, this instrument was for sale on Ebay some years ago.
Maybe someone do remember that Bass???

That's all I know... :(
