Location: 6 String Ranch | I originally wrote and recorded this for Slipkid, but it works for Ed as well
Whiskey Day
Do I now hold back the tears
grit my teeth as my heart breaks
or steel my emotions, shut them down
and just show the world a frown
I really can't do either one
Guess I wasn't made that way
I have to just let it all flow
Hope it washes away
Another one gone this morning How many does that make?
Lord knows I've lost count It's a pain that’s hard to take
I used to have a lot of friends now fewer every day
When we were young we never thought we’d see the end some day
So it’s turned into a Whiskey day
Mourn my friend who passed away
how much longer will it take
till all this hurt is gone?
I guess that’s what scares me most
Thinking about the end of the road
Please make it peaceful when I go
Not a dragged out crash and burn
Another one gone this morning How many does that make?
Lord knows I've lost count It's a pain that’s hard to take
I used to have a lot of friends now fewer every day
When we were young we never thought We’d see the end some day
So I raise a glass and go to sleep
Pray the Lord my soul to keep
May it be a long long time until we meet
Until we finally meet

Every Fall for ten years now since a dear friend passed unexpectedly in his sleep I experience a given day again like the morning his wife called me with the news. I'll go outside and suddenly notice it's gotten cooler out and instantly remember Big Jim. When I walked out the door that morning to go over to his house it had gotten cooler out that day. Sometime throughout the day I'll go get a bottle of Jack Daniels and have several rounds in his memory, like we did the last time I saw him alive while going through and playing his stack of ancient vinyl. I always wonder how long this will keep hitting me. |
