Well, some of you have been following the trials and tribulations of my hoome addition/renovation project.

This week I passed my 2 final inspections, so offically the project is finished.

Yes there are still a bunch of touch up and small things to accomplish but the bulk of the large projects are officially over.

samll projects include:
walkway
gate
patio
lattice under back deck
paint touchup
etc etc etc

well I guess I may wait a while for granite kitchen top and the upstairs bathroom remodel....

home construction and renovation is an 85/15 job...

85% gets done
15% doesn't

Law of the universe.

We're in the middle of a reno at our beach house. Contractor's initial estimate of completion: last May.

I've been at the 85% level for the last 10 years... my procrastination isn't just limited to guitar building and restoration.

Check out the newsletters. Al often posts pics of the latest remodel updates. I have a feeling that the next newsletter will show a lot of the completed project.

Congrats Al. Hopefully this will allow you to get some (I'm sure) much needed rest.

I remember finishing the basement in our townhouse. With help I did most of the work on evenings and weekends. It all took six months. I remember the carpet was being installed the day before we brought our youngest, Jacob, home from the hospital after he was born.

As I sit here in the bedroom/computer room, I still feel that all the hard work was worth it.

Cheers Al!!

About seven years ago I left my job unexpectedly and ventured out on my own. I needed an office and had an unfinished basement...sooo.

I called in favors from my personal friends that have any construction experience (wiring, drywall, carpeting, ceiling hanging) that I had helped "computer wise" over the years.
Took about three weeks start to finish. The favor pool is dry now.

I am sure that it is not as personally gratifying as yours is though, Al. But without their help it just simply could not have been done, I don't have the skills.

Congratulations and ENJOY!

Congrats, Al. I'm in the middle of a do it yourself reno, and sort of stuck on what we want to do now that it's been stripped. I'm doing everything possible to avoid contractors and permits ... the time, money and aggravation just aren;t worth it.

Now you can get to work on that Catalina.

I'm starting one next spring. A rear outdoor courtyard, walls and surface of old used bricks to match the house, big wall fireplace, built-in BBQ, and a really nice for three season jamming! The first design architect's estimate was frightening.

Well done Al.

I started building a house (from scratch) 4 and a half years ago. For the first 2 years, we lived in a 6m x 9m (20' x 30') tin shed. We moved in to the house as soon as it was at lockup stage... well, the roof was on. The missus got fed up with living in the shed. I loved it - the mess was contained.

So we've been living in a building site for 2 and a half years. My elderly mother is visiting this week and she said "Muz, when do you think you'll hammer in the last nail?"

I really have no idea, but I reckon at least another 4 and a half years.

I hope I'm wrong.

(slightly off topic, I was watching [well, my mum was] one of those 'reality' shows and this couple were about to be voted off. The judge say's "well it ain't over til the fat lady sings, but I can hear her clearing her throat. I thought that was a good quote. :D )

Al, I saw the picture in the newsletter. It's a very nice looking house. Where does the lion fountain go?

Just so you guys know that sometimes, it's different.
A few years back we added a 950 square foot upstairs addition to our formally ranch style house. From the day they started rippin' off the roof to putting up the Christmas tree in the new living room was just under 10 weeks.

initially I was told 4 months, what a laugh!
everything that could go wrong went wrong.
I got sick twice, two concrete contractors, two general contractors. 2 sets of plans damn you would think I was building the ark!

wound up doing way more of the work myself than I planned to. Plus I had to deal with my mom's illness and passing.

very stressful

glad your's went without a hitch
