So I had this dream just last night.. and in the dream I’m shredding away on a song I’ve never even played even once in my life.. perfect job, sounding great. Ever had that dream? You probably have. But, then again, this was certainly no typical guitar song. No, this was Elmer Bernstein’s theme to the movie, “The Magnificent Seven”. You know, the old Marlboro commercial song. Loud, hard hitting symphony orchestra stuff. But there I was, just banging away on it at full tilt. Then I wake up, and quickly scrambled in my head to try to remember what the chords were and what I was doing.. but no.. it was gone. Fun while it lasted. So that’s the dreamy part. Now part two. The Freud part. The psych.
Consider that I have worked closely with that song in the past (the original recording), to chop and channel it digitally into a timed, choreographed piece for a live dance performance, so I know every note and beat of it inside out. Fine. Now, also consider that I understand the essentials of music and guitar. Great. And now, ah-ha.. the question-- If it were possible to go back and somehow see a “video” of that dream, to see what my hands were actually doing… was I getting it right? Was it correct? Ya suppose it’s possible for those two elements to collide in a dreaming brain and be accurate?
Strange animal.. the human.

My theory is that you were "getting it right" inside your head - whether or not you were getting it right!
The subconscious was doing great until it started to pull on the other resting parts of the brain, then "ta-da"... you are awakened and the spell falls apart.
If we could record our REM adventures and play them back later we could easily drop our cable provider! |

Location: When?? | So if the answers thus far are for all intent and purpose "no".. then I still have to wonder what those chords, grips and transitions I was doing in the dream would sound like if played exactly the same in an awakened state. I mean, I WAS playing legitimate chords and such in the dream, that much I remember.. I just can't remember what combination and timing they came in. In other words, if the brain knows the tones AND the finger placement for them, but simply lacks the training of ever actually learning to play the song while awake, I am starting to think that the "REM adventure" finger placements on the neck and strums/plucks on the strings could still have been correct to the music of that song. Or not.. lol.

Location: Flahdaw | I too have had dreams where I was playing a song I have never played before, but the chords escaped me when I woke up. Was I actually playing the song correctly in my dream? Probably not.
I also had dreams where I was having sex with a beautiful woman and doing GREAT, but again forgot everything when I woke up to reality. |

Nice try, though.......on both subjects. |

Location: Boise, Idaho | I often have a dream about trying to find a bathroom. Fortunately, when I wake up I am able to find it just fine. Half the time I don't have to go, but since I dreamed it, I figured my mind and body were trying to tell me something, so I go anyway. If I ever dreamed about playing guitar, I'd probably dream that I couldn't find the guitar, much less the chords. |

Location: When?? | I think I've always played my normal, crappy way in other guitar dreams I've had. The only other particular song I remember playing in a dream was "Far Post" by Robert Plant; however, I already knew how to play that one before the dream occurred. I did sit down and play just a basic comp of "The Magnificent Seven"yesterday, but it was totally foreign to my awakened mind as I knew it would be. Oh well, at least I somewhat learned a new song out of the deal, and got to spill some ink with you guys. |

Location: The Great Pacific Northwest | Steve Vai said in an interview long ago, that he spent a long time learning to control his REM sleep stage so he could learn to play what he was playing in his dreams. I totally relate to this because I used to solve programming problems in my sleep, and then I would be unable to recreate the functions when I was awake. I finally reached a point, after many months.. where I would keep a pen and paper next to the bed. When I would go to sleep thinking about a problem, I would ensure I was thinking about isolating the most integral or important part of the solution and to wake up and write that part down.
That was the hardest part. Most of the time it was barely legible, and sometimes it would take a few nights of working the same problem, even after it was "solved" to get enough on paper to recreate it in code. But it did work. |

For some reason I am always running sound for Lyle Lovett...go figure. |

Location: Frozen Tundra of Minnesota | I actually think that there is something to your Dream, Love O'Fair!
Scientists have found that by having Athletes imagine (or dream) their performance, time after time, of how they want it to go, helps their body to respond during the competition, doing everything exactly like they envisioned it.
You *know* the chords that make up all of the songs, you know how to play them. Your brain can recognize the sound and structure of that chord even if you are not *aware* or paying attention, to what chord in a song is being used. So it is very reasonable, that you *are* playing a song in a dream correctly, that your brain has not seen on a sheet of paper, or someone performing, because your brain already knows the sound, and the fingering for the chord or notes. Especially when at rest, and not bombarding your poor brain with 60 things all at one time, like we do while we're awake!
I always kept a pad and pen by my bed, because I always remembered things during my sleep that I couldn't find, or figure out, during the day.
And Dave Kell, you feel exposed, or vulnerable about something in your life. Something you don't feel you can control.

You just described exactly what I was getting at in my original post. When those two elements meet in the mind with the absence of external influence (as in dreaming). Much like the clinical/psychological definition of a person with absolute pitch. People with that rare ability can typically not only hum an accurate pitch on command, but can also hear a piece of music one time, then pick up an instrument they are familiar with and instantly play it. For the rest of us, our mind needs to be in total control of its own self (dream) to do that. At least that's my lay theory. The mind is SO much more powerful asleep than awake. That's why we can visualize things of great detail in our dreams that we cannot even imagine while awake. |

Shame and guilt come to mind. Perhaps fear of a deflated ego.
(drat! just when you noticed Darkbar isn't here and thought you were off the hook.)

Location: Boise, Idaho | I frequently wake up from a dream about work. Quite a few times the dream was a reminder that something needed to be done. I'd get up and write myself a note or send myself an email reminder. I used to send other people emails in the middle of the night, but would regret them when I'd read them the next day. At least I never told anyone about running around naked in the high school hallway.
