Location: Jet City | One of my favorite bathroom reads throughout the years was the catalog from Carvin. I eventually bought an X100B, then a Carvin guitar (used, and the first to ever be shot on a red blanket), then a Belair (think 2X12 Fender Tweed), and last year got a V3 custom ordered to my specs. So glad I did as Carvin closed it's doors this month. So sad they're gone. FWIW, the guitar division split off a couple years back branded as Keisel (the Keisel family owned Carvin). So any of you folks that want a guitar, they're still available, but the audio division, amps, pro audio, etc. is dust in the wind. My V3 is by far the best amp I've ever owned dollar for dollar. It'll get just about any sound I want. Most everything has been liquidated already, but there are still a few heads left of the V3, V3m (micro/lunchbox size) and Steve Vai Legacy amps available. All the speaker cabs are gone.

Location: When?? | Nice combo. Too bad about Carvin going down. Always good stuff with logical engineering. Built to suit the user's needs instead of so many products these days that are built to suit the manufacture's needs. |

Location: Colorado Rocky Mountains | Not sure of the date, but it would have been in the early 1960’s. One of the very first guitar/amp catalogs I ever obtained was from Carvin. Stilll have it somewhere. |

Location: NJ | carvin stuff is really well respected but their mail order only marketing hurt them. except for the carvin store in hollywood
you can't try them in stores so you have to go by what they looked like in the catalog
so resale suffered.
as for their amps I have owned several.....they all blew up
maybe just my bad luck but carvin would not supply schematics and you had to send them back to the factory. they then always responded that the model was discontinued and offered you a new one at a discounted price. nothing wrong with that. to be honest I doubt they fixed anything that was not under warranty but I found it annoying that I could not get a local tech to look at something.
with that said
their products were used and respected by some of the biggest names out there.
the industry suffers whenever a major player goes down..... |

Location: When?? | I don't remember ever buying anything new or direct, but I had a some older Carvin heads and cabs I inherited when my dad died late 60's. It all got hauled and mauled for many years afterward in car trunks and rain-leaky vans like 20-somethings do with their gear, and nothing ever seemed to blow up or conk out that we couldn't typically fix with high school level electronics savvy. But not so sure about latter year stuff beyond that.. so maybe Al's bad luck came with newer generations.. and though mine was very durable and rugged, it wasn't near as ornate in appearance as the V3 in Damon's photos. I also remember that the pots were the type you could clearly feel the windings on when you turned the knobs. |
