I'm in the middle of re-necking a bowl....Ovation used something to make the neck joint (where it meets the fiberglass) a lot smoother. I know Allison used to talk about a black goo she called monkey dung or similar on the Applauses. I've actually used black silicone caulking with mediocre results.

Any suggestions?

FWIW, J-B Weld is kinda dark gray. The monkey poo was probably some kind of quick-set epoxy. As to where you would source it......best-of-luck. :-)

Go to McMaster-Carr using the following link:

Then, click on the color: black icon you'll see all kinds of epoxies that come in black. Most are quick-set.

Keep in mind that if you buy the cartridge-style, you'll need the dispensing gun. You'll only need the mixing nozzles if you're planning to lay down a long line of glue, such as when you're gluing a top to a bowl.
