Location: Lake Forest, CA | I've decided to sell my 1978 1617-4 that I rebuilt. (Serial #: 154266) This guitar features a torrefied Sitka spruce top wtih forward X-braces that are tapered and scalloped torrefied Sitka spruce that gives the guitar a bright, punchy sound. (See: Banjo Killer? The scoop on forward X bracing for greater guitar volume.)
Here's the link to the rebuild thread: 1978 1617 Legend Rebuild...
To save you from having to slog through the build thread, here's a list of the work I did to ths guitar:
New torrefied Sitka spruce top and braces. (Tapered and scalloped, forward X-brace pattern) New pearloid rosette. New ebony bridge. New OP-Pro pre-amp. New mono jack. New saddle/pick-up. New Dunlop gold strap buttons. Refinished neck & head stock. (polyurethane finish) New gold foil Ovation head stock logo. Leveled ebony fret board. New neck binding & side marker dots. New EVO gold frets. New TR cover & gold screws. New unbleached bone nut. (it's been rounded and polished since the pics below were taken) Like-new Schaller Custom Legend gold tuners with pearloid buttons.
Basically, it's a brand new 40-year-old guitar with upgraded electronics and it comes with a brown Ovation hard shell case. The action of the low-E is .093" at the 12th fret with one tapered shim (.022" - .036") under the saddle. I'm including an extra thin phenolic shim (.019") and and an extra tapered shim so that the action can be adjusted to suit the buyer's playing style. The guitar currently has new Elixir 80/20 Extra Light strings. I would not recommend anythin heavier than light gauge strings on this guitar. The guitar does have a couple of visual warts. I never filled the holes left in the bowl by the old electronics. This doesn't affect the sound. These can be seen in the pics below. I'm asking $850 USD + shipping & insurance. Dan

Damon,
Thanks. I'm not looking to make any real money on the deal. Just enough so I can start gathering tools and supplies for my wood bowl Ovation(s).

Wait.. have I been missing something you've mentioned before? You are going to make wood bowl Ovations? As in, non lyrachord?

Yes. Imagine an Ovation that looks something like this, but with a torrefied top and braces. Rosewood, mahogany and maple bowl. Now, imagine a wood-bowl Custom Legend. Then, imagine a wood-bowl Custom Elite. That's what I'm going to build. A wood-bowl Custom Legend and a wood-bowl Custom Elite.

Location: When?? | That is only the second wood bowl Ovation I've ever seen. Sheltered life, I guess. The other one was that butcher-block-looking affair that someone posted a link to several months ago, but it didn't really have all that much "Ovation-ness" to it. Looked like it weighed a ton. This one, on the other hand, is very cool. I'm anxious to watch the process on yours. |

Those were the Hamer salad-bowl guitars. Totally different beasties.
Mine will be built along the lines of the vaulted-back lutes from days of old -- all solid wood.
Alvarez offered a limited-edition round-back guitar, model-number DY-92, which was sold in the mid-80s, and based upon the old lute-back style of guitars. They are very rare and do not come up for sale very often. The pic I posted above is of a DY-92.
My wood-bowl Custom Legend and Custom Elite will be solid-wood rosewood, mahogany and maple bowls with torrefied Adirondack top guitars. The Custom Legend will be A-braced and the Custom Elite will be Quintad-braced.

So now make that 3 roundback wood bowls I've seen... but the other one I was referring to wasn't the Hamer salad bowl. I think it was just someone's one-off shop project (on eBay from Europe), and the wood pieces were side-by-side linear like the Alverez pictured above, though theirs looked rough and quite less finished, much like a kitchen cutting board.

Spoken like Sir Edmund Hillary as he was first standing at the base of Everest. Awesome aspiration. Looking forward to your climb. |

Do something REALLY impressive. Let's see a wood contour bowl :D |

Location: Ottawa, Ontario, CANADA | Hi, Everyone,
Both Hohner, and Alvarez-Yairi made wood-bowl guitars at one time, c. early 90's? The Hohner Eclipes had the salad bowl look, w/ multiple sound holes, and The Alvarez-Yairi was a ribbed version, like a lute, or mandolin, with a center sound hole. Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. Flattery will get you nowhere.

Location: Lake Forest, CA | Technically, the round-back guitar is not new. It was an outgrowth of the lute. The original guitars were round-back. Economy of production lead to the flat-back guitars as these were faster and less labor-intensive to produce.
The round-back guitars are known as vaulted back guitars. What Charlie did that was unique was to mold them from fiberglass instead of making them from wood. Again, this was a cost-saving production decision. |

I use dummy plugs, look ok and are removable...for the use as an additional soundhole are these holes too small.http://i1377.photobucket.com/albums/ah69/bluesman19591/Ovation%20repair/P1020538_zpsn27n6m7e.jpg But I must say that I did have a guitar with additional soundholes right there and the effect was very interesting, like a stereo sound. |

I'm not sure how much difference in sound a 3/8" and a 1/4" hole makes. I can't hear any change, but they do make the guitar look more finished. |

Ha!
It's a good thing I put the brass tack back into the hole next to where the volume knob used to be otherwise the guitar would sound like it's made from cardboard. |

Location: Ottawa, Ontario, CANADA | Hi, Dan,
Oh, Dear, Oh My, and, Shut The Front Door, that is such a, so very tempting offer?! Too bad, so sad for me, as I live in CANADA. I'm also getting married soon, which is NOT too bad, so sad for me, either; so all of my Canadian coins, ( we call them Loonies, and Twonies, up here in the GWN ), will now be spent on certain stuff like that there, eh? My lady wants at least one wedding picture of us together, with my Ovation guitar! WOOHOO! Thank you, Jesus, Hallelujah, AND AMEN, BROTHER! Just be patient, Dan. One very fortunate, fellow OFC member, will scoop up that wonderfully resurrected/restored git-box of yours, for sure. The price you offer is pretty close to stealing it, but not quite. YOU DO GREAT WORK! Keep it up, Dan, and keep the faith.
