Location: Vancouver Island, BC | To accommodate my singing voice, I am considering tuning down to D-D from E-E, which would make the C-shape cords more usable on the lower frets (capo or not).
I fingerpick w/light gauge .012-.053, and am considering .013-.056 (med.) to compensate.
I cant imagine being the only one doing this, so I would appreciate your opinions on string gauge and end result if you have some experience with this situation.
What string gauge is used on the Longneck O's? |

Location: When?? | I've done that before simply to ease the string tension on an older O in hopes of lending more longevity on keeping the bridge from wanting to lift and the top below the bridge from getting a pot belly.. though I stayed with the .12-.53 lights to further the lower tension effect. You can always capo on the first fret to get back to E-E if you want it, and also, yes, to more accommodate a lower singing voice. Old Man Arthur once posted a string gauge vs. tension chart that I found interesting and helpful. I can't remember what thread it was on, but I'm sure you can find one online, or maybe he will see this and post it again. I've never owned a longneck, so I don't know on that part. |

Location: seattle, wa | I used D'Addario EJ39's on an Ovation 12 fret 12 string, tuned down to B. It worked well with zero intonation problems. It was very easy to play. |

Location: Vancouver Island, BC | Along time ago...in a galaxy far far away, I studied percussion. Everything printed on one line. It left me lacking in some aspects of music theory. guitar/banjo, (and it's a long neck, which again suits my voice) is self taught. I now have the tension graphs for 12s, 13s and 14s, but I need to make sure I understand "Tuning down to B". If that refers to the E-strings in standard pitch tuned down to B, that seems like a long way down, and would explain using the EJ-18s. I seem to remember a long neck has a 26"scale?
Let me know if I misunderstand it. and thank you both for helping me out here.
I realize I will have to experiment a bit to find what works, but good basic knowledge is a good starting point.

Location: Jet City | I'm talking about a longneck. It's standard pitch is D to D. I tune down a step and a half from there. Yes, it's a longer scale.
I wouldn't recommend tuning a standard 6 string to B

Location: Cologne/Germany | My Longnecks are armed with Adamas 1818, that is 012, when tuned D to D. Another one has 1919, that is 013 on it, tuned to C. I also have one tuned to Eb, with Adamas 1717 strung on it, that is 010.... when I got it back in the day, it was tuned to E! The seller did not now about the Longneck... Fortunately, there was no damage done. It plays sweet with the 1717.
Before that, I played various Takamine tuned D to D with 013 strings, but that did not really work for me, so the Takas left the house when the Longnecks moved in...

Location: Vancouver Island, BC | Thank you all. That really clarifies it for me. I only need to tune down to DD to be happy. I will string "Scarface" up with 13s to get a feel, and compare to DD with 12s on one of the others.
Here we go....You guys are great! |
