I'm new to Ovations, have always loved them but haven't gotten around to owning one until now. I'm in the market for a 12 string and I want it to be an Ovation. I posted an ad on Craigs for a 12 string Ovation and I've gotten a couple of replies so far. One is a 1751 Baladeer with out case for $300.00, it looks to be in excellent condition the guy bought it 10 years ago. The other is an Ovation 1866 w/ case for $750.00. And finally a Ovation 1866 Legend Custom and they are asking $1250.00, which I told the guy was a bit steep. I'm wondering what you all think of these and the asking prices on them. I was really looking for a deep to mid bowl and something with on-board tuner.

Location: Boise, Idaho | Welcome, Laura. I can speak to the 1751 Balladeer, because I have one. I bought it about a year ago for about $300 and thought that was a really good deal. I don't play 12 string much, so I don't feel a need for anything much better. It has a full, but pretty bright sound with the deep bowl. Mine's also about 10 years old and doesn't have an onboard tuner. I find the older ones are too hard for me to see with my failing eyesight, so I prefer my $15 Korg anyway. I can leave it hanging on the wall and after a couple months it is still in tune, so the tuner isn't that big a deal. I think it's a great guitar for the money.
I hope someone else can help with the other 2. You might check on ebay sales to get some idea. |

Location: Castro Valley, CA | Thanks for getting back to me Mark! I saw a picture of yours, nice. The thing is it's being sold without a case and the cases for a deep-bowl aren't cheap I've found. And there isn't ONE 1751 Balladeer for sale on Ebay, which I thought was odd. Thanks again for responding. I'm starting to feel like if I don't take this baby I'll be sorry! I hate it when a guitar from a far calls to me! I always seem to call back and then it's hanging on my wall!

| Welcome to the board, Laura. I don't have an 1866, but I do have it's 6-string sister, the 1869. It's a beautiful guitar, but the shallow bowl just doesn't project as much as my deep bowl Legend. Of course, plugged in it shines! That said, $1250 is WAY too much. I got mine w/ case for $500. Can't speak to the Balladeer, but another one worth looking into is the Pacemaker. The 12th fret-to-body style really makes for superb tone, and I've seen them in very good condition w/ case for $300-400 lately. And I agree with Mike, a $15 Korg tuner can't be beat.HTH. |

In my humble opinion, I would definitely go for that 1751 in Excellent Condition.
Tuners are cheap, and you can find a case. I've bought two cases off of eBarf by buying "Project Guitars" with cases, and just pass the Projects along.
The OP-24+ pre-amp is a great unit. And once the strings stop being 'brand-new' it will stay in tune.
Now, if it was me, I woulda already bought it and would just be bragging now! :p |

BRAND New for that much.
For that 1717 deep bowl for less than that. |

I sent the guy an email that I'm going to check out the prices of cases and get back to him in the morning. Frankly I'm just hoping he drops the price a bit more, but I don't think I should push my luck. He already knocked off $50.00 after I asked if he had a case. In the beginning he said $350.00. I know I want it, I just don't want to pay too much and now I feel better about it. This will be my first Ovation and my first used guitar purchase. I have a 35 year old Les Paul, but that was aquired. It's nice to see others with the same guitar buying obsession I have! I just love em!

When I first contacted the OFC, I had just bought the 4861 on eBay, and I wanted to know if I had done a dumb thing.
(I only owned the Lyon Strat and the Johnson)

The 1866 is a super shallow bowl ... unless you're playing plugged in, I think you'd like that 1751 a whole lot more, especially for the money. $300 is a smokin' good deal for a Balladeer 12 in great shape. Cases are plentiful, and besides, you'll have the guitar out all the time anyway, right? ;)
And TP sounds really good on an O 12. |

Location: UK | Hi Rocknmom , i cant offer any advice except you could never get an ovation for that price over here not even double that , so on that basis alone buy it , just recently bought an obscenely expensive guitar and feeding both dog and child on pot noodles ( dont know if you have them over there , handy small plastice pots of dried wheat with lashings of monosodium glutamate E1242 E6321 E1984 artificial colorings B546 B2134 , you just add hot water , fantastic !) and with all the money ive saved from that im buying another one as two suddenly just isnt enough . :D |

I also have a bit, uh alot, of writers block so I'm hoping this will help! I just know there's lots of songs in that 12 string just waiting to come out. Thanks for the push everyone! I'm glad I don't live with any of you or I'd have a 100 guitars. And no room in the house. But now isn't that a lovely thought a sea of guitars! UMMMM

In the last 3 months I have traded my 2003 Taylor 454CE ltd 12 string for a Taylor T5 and sold a beat up non-playable 1974 Ibanez Custom Agent. I then used the money from the Ibanez sale to purchase a 1988 Maxxas M3 (Custom division of Ibanez) electric guitar and a 1980 Fender 75 tube amp. I then found that the T5 was not my cup of tea so I traded that for a 2005 Gibson Advanced Jumbo (which I LOVE!!!) and my most recent conquest (and maybe the best trade yet) was trading the Fender 75 amp (which I only paid $200 for off of Craigslist) for my newest addition, a 2006 Cherry burst 6756 Legend LX 12 string with the OP Pro!!! All of the above except the 1974 Custom agent were transacted through Craigslist. As of now, I don't have anymore GAS pains but I have two new babies in the house to play with, the Gibson and the Ovation. Could life be any better??? :D

I live in MN and would kill for a warm weather relative I could go crash with for a few months.. December thru April would be perfect! Any takers, I'll bring the guitars and leave the wife and kids home!
Actually Craigslist has been performing better for me than my 401K! The Maxxas M3 Ibanez guitar I got off there was one of only 300 ever made! The guy was getting divorced and needed cash now so I paid him and took home a real winner. They originally cost more than an american strat back in 1988. A Maxxas was also the guitar that Ibanez sent to Steve Vai that convinced him to join as a signature artist and create his JEM series guitars. The $350.00 I paid was nothing compared to the one that sold on Evil Bay in England for close to $1800.00 american or the one that listed in the states for around $2000! I was going to buy it, clean it up and sell it but once I started to play it, I knew it was a keeper forever (or at least until my kids sell it when I am long gone!) The Fender Amp for the Ovation was just as good a trade in my opinion.... I love a good deal and even if my wife and kids don't quite "get it" when it comes to GAS attacks and such, I do and have never lost a deal on CL yet! |
